DCS more CPU or GPU intensive?

Recommended Posts

currently my flight computer is just an "older" computer since my wife upgrading hers and it allowed me to have a flight desk set up away from my own regular PC so i dont have to worry about moving stuff around when i want to fly.

Currently has an i5 4460 (3.2Ghz LGA1150 socket) and an EVGA GTX 960 (4GB Vram) installed in it but doesn't seem to be able to run flight sims at the best quality and frame rates, i can generally get away with medium setting with some fancy stuff off completely. would would benefit more from an upgrade?

If i had to upgrade my CPU i would stick with the LGA1150 so i dont have to upgrade the motherboard and RAM as well, this is just a secondary computer basically dedicated for flight sims so i dont want to go too overboard on upgrading to the best of the best

Your processor is fairly recent ... if I were you, I'd upgrade the VGA first ... even a used GTX970 would provide about 50% more fps ...

... a change in processor, using the same motherboard, would give a much smaller improvement. I recently upgraded my core i5 for a core i7 of the same generation and DCS improved very little.

Mobile: iPad Pro 12.9" of 256 GB

DCS is more gpu intense but, at first, you need a cpu who can run at 4.2Ghz+. A "K" version. What is your resolution?

Just regular 1080p

I would not say that. DCS is a mix between CPU and GPU demands. There are tons of people with CPU bottleneck. Even I with this i7 at 4.4ghz on all cores have some moments of GPU load decrease due to CPU not being able to process everything.

Do you OC the cache freq as well? I always wondered how much difference can there be between core and cache. Ive mine with 400 mhz difference.

... since my wife upgrading hers and it allowed...

No, no, no... usually should be the wife to get the older computer(for work) and the husband get the new(for play):megalol:

Anyway you missed to say what is your budget for the upgrade: to enjoy the sim at 1080p, your PC is not so old but some components need a refresh ;)

How much RAM do you have? Maybe that would be your best bet for an upgrade.

32 gb

Well being in Australia, prices are not consistent. But essentially I was looking at the gtx 1060s as the GPU upgrade and since I'd only be upgrading one thing at the moment the budget would be the same for the CPU (500aud)

1.5 is cpu limited, but thats because the engine is old and bad and will be thrown into the dumpster fairly soon.

2.1 / then to be 2.5 is GPU limited and not that badly dependant on very fast RAM and CPU.

DCS 2 is actually performing very poor in terms of optimization. I might be wrong though, but it seems to be the concense.

My feeling is that DCS is running in the old M$ sim way.

Everything is pushed through the CPU, leaving little workload to GPU for graphic effects. You could install a very decent Graphic card, but it did not help on fps.

My own PC is mediocre, but run OK on other sims with higher graphic settings (texture, light, shadow). Seems that GPU takes care of the heavy graphics, leaving the old worn CPU to do the calculating tasks.

Cpu i7-4790k is about 450 AUD, the same for gtx1060, but a more gpu oriented update maybe i5-4690k (350aud) with a gtx1070 (650aud)

yeah thats what i was looking at, no idea why the previous generation of CPUs are so expensive, but still cheaper than having to get a new cpu, motherboard and RAM. I've essentially discovered that i would have to get the CPU form amazon in the US since all the places in australia i normally buy from dont stock anything but the 4460 and a xenon e3 and then just worse CPUs.

I'll probably start with just the GPU, see how it performs and hopefully the 4460 will be able to last until 2.5 comes out (i dont have NTTR so i dont really need the power at the moment) since i'm guessing that's going to put a whole lot more pressure on the hardware with all the new lighting and graphical upgrades
