You should get everything with the beta.

It installed nothing but DCS World on my system even though all modules are activated and installed elsewhere on the machine.

did you go into module manager after installing the DCS World beta?

I don't even know what a module manager is. I'm installing now; I hope it is self-explanatory.

Update process is interesting, though a bit unexpected.

First: it will copy your already 1.2.6 installation to the new Beta folder - local transfer at HDD speed

Second: it will download the online updates at your normal internet speed.

So, I missed to first remove the mods. All textures and so on will be present in the new open beta.

For now I will stay like this, if something odd will appear I will redo the installation using only original files.

In the main menu, click on module manager, log in with the account from DCS.com (not here) and then install the modules you want. It's pretty easy.

Always remember. I don't have a clue what I'm doing

Clearly states in the OP that you use the Module Manager to download your modules.

A straight installer would have been far more practical.

Once you download the open beta, you will use the Module Manager to install your modules.

I think the installer is great. Will mission be backwards compatible with 1.2.6 so we can use one source for our own missions or do we need to make a copy of the mission to keep the 1.2.6 version safe?

Anything created in 1.2.7 should be assumed will have issues with running in 1.2.6 (depending on the complexity of the mission of course)... anything in 1.2.6 should be resaved to use in 1.2.7.

Not really, the module manager only installs what you own, makes more sense that way.

The standalone install files could have been rehosted though. The current mechanism is showing me a 5 day download, on a 250Mbps link, so it's not practical for me to try the beta this way.

EDIT: Forget that, using the Steam open beta, and getting 10 MB/s now :)

> OpenBeta is available on Steam in the openbeta branch. (It's in the Steam menu, in BETA tab).

Multiple installs are not possible with Steam, though.

Which part are you downloading? Did you chose the option to copy the files from your current install?

It shows a download of 12GB, so I guess everything. I only kept the Steam DCS World and all modules around once it went there (faster download :)). Is it worth copying that install across to somewhere else so the files can be found and just the deltas are then downloaded? - that would really help.

From a different thread:

OpenBeta is available on Steam in the openbeta branch. (It's in the Steam menu, in BETA tab).

Multiple installs are not possible with Steam, though.

So, just to be sure no mod files interfere with testing, you would need to manually remove all mods then select the beta branch to get a clean/useful beta experience. Otherwise crashes may be attributable to installed mods rather than just DCS World (and the mods are the responsibility of the mod creator/maintainer to properly keep updated to work in newer versions of DCS World). :)

you shouldnt need to just like you dont remove mods when updating, since it overwrites everything that isnt from the actual game.
