German Airfields

Recommended Posts

Not true.

The LW was more active than just that one famous flight on D-Day. At least 9 LW units flew missions in the Normandy area.

I watched the video. My take is this:

For our purposes, it seems that, in SP missions, a lot of scenarios are possible. But, for MP, the choices are more limited. How do you put German airfields on the map? You can't put them on any of the fields near the beach head. Where do you then put the Allied fields, except in England. The only answer seems to be German a/c can only start in the air at some distance from the beach head. Far enough away that they are not immediately attacked.

What we have being Alpha, maybe some ideas will surface with time. No disrespect to anyone at ED, but this map, right now, seems to be much more oriented toward the Allies, with less thought for what the people flying 109/190's are supposed to do.

We've had A-10C's in Georgia the last 5 years, humbly, I don't see MP being limited by the strict time period as much as SP myself. I'm sure opinions will differ person to person on that.

Why can't we have just some additional fields to the south or east so we can have missions where the Germans can actually take off further away from the battle area...

Its still Alpha WIP, there are plans for grass runways you can place anywhere and make an airfield. I personally haven't tried yet, its still Wip

, its in the editer ,patience grasshopper

Exactly.

Tonight, I flew south as far as our map would go, and there was lots of "map" further on. Our map ends just south of Pommville.

There is plenty of map to the east, also.

We have voiced our opinions, and preferences. Now, let's give ED a chance to maybe make some changes in the Beta, or Final version.

  • 1 year later...

I know this is an old thread, but my reply is a direct follow on from the discussion here. And the necessary research has taken me a LONG time.

---

There are only four airfields on the DCS Normandy map, which were ever used by the Germans. These are:

Cherbourg-Maupetus -- effectively bombed to destruction by the Allies on 22-May-1944. It was captured then rebuilt by the Allies between 26-Jun and 04-Jul-1944 and then used as ALG A-15.

Caen-Carpiquet -- runway demolished by the Luftwaffe on 06-Jun-1944 and infrastructure by 17-Jun-1944. It was captured by Anglo-Canadian Forces on 09-Jul-1944 and was operational again by 08-Aug-1944 as ALG B-17.

Lessay -- was permanently obstructed by the Luftwaffe on 27-Apr-1944. US Forces captured the field on 16-Jul-1944. It was re-built between 01-Aug-1944 and 25-Aug-1944 after which it was used for B-26 bombers as ALG A-20.

Évreux -- used during June and July by LW units. Bombed on 13, 15 and 25-June. Last unit (Stab./JG3) left on 05-Jul-1944. Base abandonned in early August.

Basically, the only valid post-D-Day German airfield is Évreux. All other fields were Allied only.

The presence of Meautis A-17 limits the date of the map. Construction of Meautis started 24-Jul-1944 and it was operational 17-Aug-1944. In other words, the dateline of the Normandy map must be at least 24-Jul-1944 (if not later) and by that time even Évreux was no longer in use.

Thus, at the moment, it is impossible to have an historically correct map with both Allied and Axis airfields.

  • Solution 1. Remove Biniville, Brucheville, Lingerolles and Meautis. This will move the dateline for the map forward (making it consistent with Epson and Charnwood) and thus making the use of Évreux appropriate.
  • Solution 2. Add some more Luftwaffe airfields that are appropriate for the late-July / early-August dateline.
  • Solution 3. Provide a "static airfield object" (like a FARP), which Mission Builders can place on the map. This will give the greatest flexibility and allow for the most historical missions.

The above is the basis of a long research project. The full article, with all data, references, maps, etc. is available here: https://www.stormofwar.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=56&t=6813

JG 5 Ice See Fighters where also on Evreux in June...

All other LW Units where outside of the Map Boundary, closest was JG2 somewhere so far I remember...

I posted all of this info right after map release and nothing changed so far. Therefore I doubt anything will change in future to make this map credible in any way.

Well germans had a few more strips held till July/August which would be suitable for inclusion, just to make the map more usable for non airquake and actual missions. It would be highly beneficial for mission design based around the Invasion if these airfelds were present.

These include:

Argentan

Conches

St Andre de-l'Eure

Marcilly la Campagne

Damville Creton

I think barely any of these were german before and only one was active on D-Day.

Lessay was german but never active.

Carpiquet was german but not active in 44.

Maupertus was abandoned in May 44 and likely inactive since 43.

Evreux being the only active Luftwaffe field during the invasion currently on the map.

Here is some info on the allied airfields. Most of these were only in use during the Normandy campaign. The airfields that opened the latest date to 25. August 44 and the earliest closed airfields to 21. August 44.

Beuzeville Opened: 12 June 1944 Closed: 18 September 1944

Cretteville Opened: 4 July 1944 Closed: 5 September 1944

Brucheville Opened: 2 August 1944 Closed: 5 September 1944

Meautis Opened: 17 August 1944 Closed: 7 September 1944

I dont think the credibility comment was needed, that said, we have a pretty powerful Mission Editor, you can do a lot of things, including not using airfields if you dont want to. And many other things to make and use the map how you wish.

On DCS has a "never" complete static airfield on mission editor, under Static object > grass airfield > grass airfield. That missing the runway object and the proper implementation to work into the simulator. Was added at same time of Normandy map.

Yeah, I need to chase that down and see where the hold up on that is.

I think that people get way too redicuous about this stuff. I'm a big aviation history buff with a large aviation library to prove it....but I still say "who cares?" Use what ever field you want. Call it whatever the hell you want. Fly the Spit from it, fly the Mustang from it....hell, fly the 109 from it. You all need to stop taking this shit too seriously. I'm just enjoying the hell out of that Spitfire.
