best preload radius

Recommended Posts

This isn't an easy answer because your issue is not preload if you are struggling to find the airfield from 3nm.

Having a smaller preload isn't always good for older systems, nor always having bigger preload on high end.

Its more like a trade between longer load times in return for fewer stutters in terrain loading.

Now that my F14 has almost finished downloading, I suggest you change visibility to clear and viewing distance to ultra. Failing that - seek troubleshooting section

preload radius at maximum of course, if you're using SSD .....

What is the best preload radius for a high end computer? I set high tab in settings. I can't see an airport till I am about 3 miles. I have hard time finding the airport even with TACAN.

Go to Options menu, System. Change Visibility Distance to Extreme.

With 16GB RAM and an 8+ GB card, set preload radius to max (150,000.)

Make sure the fog isn't cranked up, 'cause it'll obscure your view of the horizon--which is what the stuff does! :)

I'm not sure about preload radius - but this is what the visibility setting does to my system ;-)

All other settings were set to low, running latest build of 2.5.4.

AVG, Min and Max are FPS measured by fraps with the default Su-25 flying the same free flight mission over Tbilisi without any control input.

My opinion is that this mostly affects how much the game loads into RAM. If you have 32GB, max it out. If you have less, take a look at ram usage and tailor it to suit.

Thanks for this. Takes work to generate hard numbers but they are very useful.

One question in my mind is, if you have enough RAM to run high preload, would that allow you to squeeze a little more vis range in there. So instead of going for max fps, if you said OK 60fps is enough, how can I get the most out of that? If preload radius would make a difference

My prediction is, it might smooth things out a little as you transition into a busy area, like going from desert to city. I'd be surprised if it gave you enough headroom to add eye candy.

Problem with maxing preload is it makes the initial load in even.more time consuming, and you really don't need to see 150,000 meters right off the bat, do you? You can't see THAT far anyway.

I set mine to 30,000. That insures there is aren't any ''gaps'' in my immediate vicinity, but I'm not waiting while the game loads a bunch of terrain and such that I'm almost definitely NOT going to be flying around.

I've used both high and low ranges for this value, and settled on the lower for above reasons. This has been the case since Sata, SSD, and now NVMe. There just isn't much incentive to have a huge preload.

Now view RANGE is quite critical. You should set that as far as you can while maintaining good framerates. My dad had a similar 'can't see the airfield' issue during flights. It would be helpful instead of 'low-medium-extreme' we were given the actual numerical value. I don't know how far medium vs extreme is @@ Someday maybe I'll measure it and post the results.

I would try playing around with the settings and see if it helps.

Still, with a good systems like you have, you should and it's recommended to get an SSD for it and also half your loading times too.

I know this thread is old a bit but I just wanted to add my 2 cent in case someone finds this thread again since it was the first google find for me just now looking for the answer for the same question.

So with the hardware seen in my signiture even though most of the commenter said set it to max is a good option for better PCs my experience is the total opposite.

I have created a 2 min replay for benchmarking reason at Normandy flying the FW-190D9 from takeoff so I can record the datas of the FPS more consistently and get some idea how can I fine tune my DCS graphical setting to get the best performance with least graphical fidelity loss.

It turned out this setting on my hardware when maxed out(at 150) only does more stutter than good . Also looked less smooth to my the eyes.

My test was done with the beta 2.5.6.47403.

(Using Ultra Visibility settings and almost everything maxed 1080p)

At 150 my the results.

Average framerate : 82.6 FPS

Minimum framerate : 1.9 FPS

Maximum framerate : 101.1 FPS

1% low framerate : 35.4 FPS

0.1% low framerate : 1.9 FPS

At 100

Average framerate : 86.2 FPS

Minimum framerate : 40.9 FPS

Maximum framerate : 106.9 FPS

1% low framerate : 45.4 FPS

0.1% low framerate : 2.1 FPS

And with 50

Average framerate : 87.9 FPS

Minimum framerate : 41.9 FPS

Maximum framerate : 106.9 FPS

1% low framerate : 59.6 FPS

0.1% low framerate : 2.2 FPS

So I stick with 50 for now. It seems set it to the max it does not help always even when newer hardwares are used.

Thanks for sharing your numbers, which confirms what I experienced during the last months flying DCS.

I have it somewhere at 70 all the time, and I often play around with the number, but in the end I landed at 70.

I think preloading its bugged. So you will have best results with 50Km?

It might not be the best but I got better results consistently the lower I set it and the lowest setting I have tried was 50.

Maybe different configuration will produce different result . I have just wanted to post about my experience that the maximum settings might not be the best in every case on every system.
