But the jet is not yet competed. Not all tests are done yet.

The thing that comes to mind has nothing to do with attacking ground targets. I suspect it is there to test the neighbors reaction and interception times to the new su-57.

Or perhaps it's for Russia to be able to market the aircraft as "combat certified" for export? Perhaps it was for of the Defense of the Fatherland celebrations? Perhaps it's in reaction the the PLAAF getting it's J-20A?

Just because it flew to Syria for a few days doesn't mean it's now IOC, and just because it's not IOC, doesn't mean it can't forward deploy.

You're right, it's just stupid to send an aircraft that isn't Initial Operational Capable

To a forward deployed base

seems a bit narrowminded to apply american standards to russian actions

to the main point though it remains to be seen if these will actually fly or if they're just taking a visit down to sit pretty for the satellites.

Exactly.. Western doctrine and policy is considerably different than both Chinese and Russian regarding new platforms and IOC/FOC status.

It is likely that Russia brought them over to do some system tests and give it that "Combat Proven" check mark in light of the PLAAF getting it's J-20A's. Syria is a low threat air environment and the perfect place to conduct some testing and possible weapons trials in the short few days they were deployed.

  • 4 months later...

It is currently being reported that the Su57 will not go into mass production:

:shocking:

'Tis a shame. Seemed like a cool bird. :pilotfly:

TBH I dont know what those news mean (too much sensationalism to filter these days). Might just be a delay, could the due to engine troubles. Ill wait until the specialized press reports whats going on.

No mass production is not the same as no production.

Remember the F-22 numbers, 175, by no means could be consider a mass production example.

It's just a mistranslation of a speech from the deputy defence minister. Here's a less sensationalist one.

Roughly translated: "As you know, our Su-35 is among the best aircraft in the world. Because of that there's little reason to rush the work towards mass-producing fifth generation aircraft. This is our trump card which we can always play should the previous generation start falling behind their equivalents from leading world countries."

Seems like they want to refine it a little more before building a whole air force out of it, which is a sound idea.
