Thank you for the interview!

Q. Do you ever fly Multiplayer on public servers? And what is the most exciting non aircraft feature you can't wait to tell us about, in the not so near future of this SIM. - winchesterdelta1

A. No public server activity really. Much better ground warfare, game engine and campaign engine…

That sounds really great.

A. Our AI in general is poor and we will improve it. We haven’t placed enough energy in this area. 100%

The only thing that's needed to keep it on the level and fair for MP, is the need for a AFM/PFM flight model and a good damage model that can tie into this, the same as the other full modules will with their systems, such as the P-51D Mustang.

Then I don't see a problem here.

High quality FM (even simplified) and a High Quality Damage model for sure.

With the risk of going a bit off topic here, FC version for WW2 aircraft ? How much more can you simplify the systems on a WWII aircraft, I mean ? Okay, no clickable cockpit, but FC aircraft still have an advanced flight model and damage model, correct ?

or is it just in the means of a big pack ?

I am not really into War birds and I don't fly any, but this particular Q/A just sparked some curiosity in me.

Sorry for my ignorance in advance (when it comes to War birds) and for the potential OT

I think its more in FM and system modelling. Current warbirds demand a crazy amount of information that no other flight sim has done to date. They can relax that a bit, and as you said no clickable cockpit, etc. But as we get close, we will see what they decide to do.

Thanks, I will pass it on to Nick and Dima. Remember too that the Mosquito currently flying in Seattle at the FHC used to be owned by The Fighter Collection ;)

Spitfire Landing Characteristics

Another quick question for Nick on the Spitfire (to some degree addressed in his first response) about landing characteristics, and also about inertia.

I’m convinced that my dad, as a WW2 pilot with 137 combat missions with 308 (Polish) squadron in exactly the same Spitfire mark and era portrayed by DCS (Nov 43-Nov 44) would have been mortified by his inability to avoid a wingtip scrape on landing the DCS Spitfire, were he still alive.

Is the Spitfire really that tricky to land? I have always been under the impression that it was a counter-intuitive characteristic of the Spitfire that despite its narrow landing gear, it was easy to land (at least as compared to other equivalent aircraft). Otherwise its navalised version would surely have never been remotely considered.

I also find that the Spitfire’s airspeed indicator in the DCS model waves around like a metronome, whereas the P-51, powered by the same engine, can be difficult to slow down. Very different aircraft, to be sure, but are their inertial characteristics really that different in the real world?

Anytime you get narrow landing gear, it's going to be tricky to land, by virtue of the fact any torque or aileron variation at all is going to want to tip you over. There's no way to avoid that. It's less of an issue with jets because they don't have torque to contend with.

With a prop engine, it's important not only to avoid moving your stick unnecessarily, but also the throttle. You're dealing with a 1500+hp engine, small movements translate to lots of power variation, whether increasing or decreasing you're going to get a lurch in one direction or the other.

The key to avoiding or minimising that situation is to approach at the lowest speed possible, glide slope very important, let the aircraft touch down and begin bleeding off speed before you reduce throttle. If you've got a few thousand feet of runway, don't be afraid to use it a good section of it to slow down. Once you've bled off some speed, you can begin gently reducing throttle and it will be easier to control any "adverse reaction".

-edit

It's kinda like a Ferrari vs a Volkswagen : Both can spin the wheels, but it takes a lot less throttle to do it with the Ferrari.

It's funny you should ask, I asked him the same thing my first Skype conversation with him. His answer was yes its tricky BUT, in the real thing it's easier to avoid, why? Your butt. You have more feeling in the real thing, therefor its much harder to get yourself in trouble, where as in DCS, its much easier to let the aircraft get away from you. Its the reason we were giving landing and take off assistance, to make up for our lack of feel and controls.

On the IAS from Yo-Yo:

You can answer that IAS in Spitfire uses REAL POSITION ERROR based on British detailed measurements. As we have no REAL P-51 measurements we do not implement this kind of error to it TILL WE FIND THE SAME DATA if they exist.

So the waves he mentioned is not TRUE IAS changes

just AoA function

influence

the same is for altitude

You still taking new questions in here, or will there be a new thread for round #2?

No this was really meant for the answers, and I told Nick that I thought it went over very well, so we will do more, possible more with Nick, or more with others. I would like to do one with the P-47 and how they are doing it without the information they need using computer wind tunnel gizmos (yes, technical terms :) ).

So again, in a few weeks I will put up something else for questions.

Nineline please do that I am waiting on the P-47D and I almost loss confidence that it would come out.

Me-262 info, please.

I am placing another order for docs from NASM right now as a short answer :) They have narrowed down to specific gaps in their knowledge on it.

I surprised that my question was addressed

Why? Nothing wrong with your question.

Nineline please do that I am waiting on the P-47D and I almost loss confidence that it would come out.

I actually asked Yo-Yo about doing one of his famous Yo-Yo threads on this, and the program they are using to get the data they need. He said he isnt ready yet, but I am sure either by means of a Q&A, or one of his threads he likes to post, we will get some info.

Awesome read. Specially happy about the FC4 confirmation. Will the FC4 aircraft now have AFM when released?

And I hope that all FC4 aircraft will have al radios working, clickable and adjustable. That should be possible to get through the licensing and would make the modules better suited for radio mods.

My only hope for FC4 is that it adds capable Russian/Redfor aircraft.

If full fidelity is impossible for modern russian aircraft as has been hinted at plenty of times, then FC4 might be the only chance they have to make some russian planes.
