VR Rig Spec Out

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, I just got an O+ and I quickly realized my 970 is nowhere near enough to push it. My current specs are:

i5 4690k OC to 4.2ghz

GTX 970

16gb DDR3

500gb SSD

Now my question is this: when I go to build my upgrade, should I stay on the blue/Green team or is team red the way to go? I've seen a lot on the Radeon VII but nothing on how it'll preform in VR. If I stay Nvidia, should I go for a used 1080ti or sell my soul for a 2080ti? How does Ryzen vs Intel fare? Thanks in advance!

Edit: spelling. Words are hard.

Does it have to be either/or ? . 2070 has performance mid-way between 1080 and 1080ti , for less than the cost of a used 1080ti , and less than half the cost of a 2080ti . 2080 out-performs a 1080ti for 2/3 the cost of a 2080ti .

They are asking crazy prices for the 1080 TI.

I don't recommend third party sellers, just sayin.

Doesn't have to be - just what I would suggest for VR in DCS.

He will be limited by his CPU. I have 2080 Ti + 6700k@4.5GHz and still cannot get stable 90fps, while GPU usage is about 50-60%.

Nor have I been able to, although for simple free flight testing you should be able to get mostly 90FPS on NTTR maybe on Caucasus and less so on PG and on Normandy, if a Swallow* fart$ in the Forrest,.. 45FPS. :)

From here it's CPU clock and memory speed and VR improvements.

Go cheap or go large.

My rig is very playable, if I weren't already long AMD I'd probably go with a 1070ti, 2070 or 2080 depending on the budget. Regardless of what GPU you're using, you're still gonna be looking through a screen door. If you're going large, I agree with Marklar, you're gonna want a chip you can oc to 5+marklars, a mobo that'll handle it. Cooling system, ram, m.2 ssd, that's gonna start adding up to a lot of marklars, marklar

I run VR with about what you have. It doesnt look as pretty as it could snd framerates sometimes suck. But it does work. Check out my low end VR thread in the vr forum.

New hotness: I7 9700k 4.8ghz, 32gb ddr4, 2080ti, :joystick: TM Warthog. TrackIR, HP Reverb (formermly CV1)

Old-N-busted: i7 4720HQ ~3.5GHZ, +32GB DDR3 + Nvidia GTX980m (4GB VRAM) :joystick: TM Warthog. TrackIR, Rift CV1 (yes really).

I've got it playable right now, but my system is pushing 5 years old right now and I'm feeling the itch to upgrade lol but now I'm eyeballing team red. Ryzen 3000 and Radeon VII are tempting, even though the new Ryzen isn't *technically* a thing... Yet

It has its advantages. You don't have to spend a ton of money to get a decent B450 mobo, a 5-2600 will hold a place in there until 3rd gen comes out. I'm liking what Radeon is doing with their drivers recently and they seem invested in VR, in particular it seems like they are embracing multi-GPU where nvidia is pulling back from that, perhaps maybe?

OTOH I don't think other flight sims will even run on AMD GPU's, if that matters

No personal experience , but a You-Tuber who specialises in X-plane says 1/2 framerates to be expected from an AMD-equivalent GPU .
