Advice needed: i9-9900K+z390 vs i7-8086K+z370

Recommended Posts

Please ignore this post as I've changed my plan.

-----------original post--------------------------------------------

Have been struggling with VR performance, and now sort of convinced that my old i7-6700+z170 setup needs to be replaced to eliminate the CPU bottleneck and fully unleash my RTX 2080 Ti.

I'm now having two options:

1. Costly option: go for brand new i9-9900K + z390

2. Less costly option: a friend has a spare i7-8086K + z370, which I can purchase probably in good terms.

I don't use the rig to do any performance-demanding tasks other than DCS.

So question is, assuming using the rig for DCS(VR) only, how much difference of the actual performance will there be between the above two options? Will i9-9900K+z390 provide any noticeable improvement over the other one? (I know when looking at the specs, there will certainly be a handful of differences, but to what extent will those difference matter to DCS?)

Frequency-wise, I think i7-8086K can also boost up to 5GHz.

The 9900k will be harder to cool at 5G, if that is your goal.

The 8086k can reach 5.4GHz with good samples, it's 2 cores less but two cores less to cool too.

Both require excellent watercooling beyond 5G, I dare to say even at 5G watercooling is a must.

Does the 8086k need a delid ? if yes, I'd still prefer the 8086k in your case ( and cheaper as you say ), the cost for delidding is roughly 60€ all together, tool + liquid metal + paste + silicon to reglue the lid back on. 1h work.

On a second thought, I might not proceed with that deal due to planning consideration.

But anyway, thanks for the insight. And that delidding sounds quite... risky... :D

I have been running my 9900k since Jan 15th and love it.

Paired with a 2080 Ti, it offers about the best one can hope for in VR performance in my humble opinion.

I am running my 9900k at 5.1 GHz on all 8 cores with no problem, temps reasonable. No AVX offset.

I do run a Corsair H150i Pro closed loop water cooler.

Having said that, I am sure something like a 9700k would offer about the same or very close also. I would definitely go with the 9xxx series of Intel CPU though.

Advice needed: i9-9900K+z390 vs i7-8086K+z370

the way games are designed, a 9600 or 9700 @ 5.1Ghz would provide similar performance.

but the 9900 is a great chip and will really come into its own in a couple of years when more software starts to make use of extra processing capabilities.
