KOREA! 1952 (MiG vs Sabre PvP Server)

Folks, can I just say, I am completely thrilled with the turnout & response so far. I put a ton of work into increasing the reliability of the server & new features, and you guys are really making me feel like it was all worth it. Thank you so much.

I would also like to reiterate that the server is still in its initial testing phase-- once all bugs are worked out and I know the basic template works 100%, I will continue to add possible objectives. Mission variety will only increase over time.

One note to the dev, why we (sabre pilots) cannot mount the Gar-8? Is it out of the theater's era? Because those migs still have a really big cannon on the nose, we could use the help. Thnx!

Delta's post above is correct, use of GAR-8s would not be historically appropriate to the Korean War. This was a guns-only, "last of the duelists" era of air warfare.

Of note: the MiG has higher-caliber guns, yes, but flown properly, the F-86-F can almost completely control the engagement. A MiG pilot might claim it's the Sabre who has the overall advantage, and I would find it hard to disagree with him. Which factor becomes the deciding one in the merge depends entirely on pilot knowhow and teamwork.

HI

Is the server available for DCS 2.1 ?

No. In general, server will stay on Caucasus, as I believe it remains the best stand-in for the Korean peninsula. Additionally, I would like to keep the server A) in one place, and B) on the basic map included with DCS World, so as not to limit the potential audience of the server. Along with everyone else I am eagerly looking forward to the eventual facelift of the Caucasus.

I am no professional but from my experience so far on this server id suggest to just do some basic tutorials on start up takeoff/landing procedures, make sure you know how to work the radios and do a complete read on the mission briefing and id say you would be good! I did stumble across some good mig drivers earlier while my squad was on, there a definitely some aces out there :) Ground targets are nice and juicy for HVAR rockets as well.

Really enjoying this server! I will probably be buying the mig15 now too

I've just started to learn the MiG-15bis and The F-86 Sabre. I would love to get involved with this, so is this a server you would recommend for people who are just starting out as well or will I embarrass myself?

Delta has it about right, most important thing in Multiplayer is always just to be considerate and read the briefing. I would say the only things you really need to know to fly any mission on the server are:

* taxi/take-off/landing

* how to use your radios

* what a bearing is

* how to read a

Pretty simple stuff. In general the 50s planes are "easy to learn, hard to master" and that's the fun of it. If you want a quick orientation flight in the Sabre on the server sometime-- and you're willing to get on a mic-- hit me up on the Discord. I'd offer the same in the MiG, except I'm still basically a noob in that plane myself.

Have you considered adding the labels mod used by a lot of the WW2 servers? Although a lot more fights seem to happen at contrail level with the jets than the props, once you get low it’s still pretty tough to spot things.

Thank you all for the feedback, both here & on Discord! Has been very helpful in fine-tuning the server.

Nice server. Long waited for like. Thanks for your work! I would very much like to have a website with statistics.

I am looking into this-- the technical side of it is a little above me at the moment, but I hope to provide an interim solution soon.

I believe with low contrails, EWR broadcasts, and the F-86's quite striking smoke trail, situational awareness is just about the correct level of difficulty on this server currently.

Even if it is a little unreasonably hard to spot people on the deck, this will only encourage the kind of flying that this server is all about: proper CAP flights at altitude, with mutual visual coverage from wingmen, and not just lone wolves trawling the deck for stragglers.

The label mod also has serious drawbacks-- like seeing dots through your cockpit.

I think for a WW2 pure dogfighting server, there is a good case to be made for using the label mod, but less so in a mission-based Mig vs Sabre server like this one.

No problem. Like you said the contrails do help. And I understand that the mod has it's drawbacks.

After several days trying to get up to speed in the MiG to brave this server I took the plunge last night. "Learn the radios and read the Brief" I was told, so I did and still I couldn't talk to anyone except my ground crew. Taxiing like a tourist and eventually remembering to close my canopy I crawled to the runway. 2 strafes by the enemy and with a plane full of holes and my canopy cracked I was in position. Should I quit or continue? The thought of explaining to a ground crew how I had filled their plane full of holes without even getting off the ground pushed me on.

To cut a long story short I made it up but got swooped on by my nemesis again. After 10 minutes of showing him all my evading moves he eventually got fed up or probably just ran out of fuel or ammo.

I decided after all that I would land and book some leave as soon as I got out. I avoided eye contact with my ground crew as I climbed out and found a dark room to lie down in.

I'll be back :)

Reminder! Bomber escort / intercept event on KOREA! 1952 is happening tomorrow, Sunday, Oct 8 at 2100 HRS UTC.

This event will occur on the public server, open to all, but for those interested in participating in a teamwork-driven way, meet in the Discord voice channel at 2100 sharp. NOTE: Please have SIMPLERADIO installed and working.

Each team will be sorted into flights of four. Bring your friends & wingmen! If you end up in a flight of other strangers, be prepared to speak up and volunteer as flight lead if you have the experience.

There will be 30 minutes allocated for each side to plan their flight. Mission will begin at 2130 UTC, or when both sides are ready. The server may or may not be restarted just prior to mission, depending on playercount at the time.

Mission start will be marked by a scramble call at airbase. Load fuel tanks, start-up, and take-off quickly but in orderly fashion, following all the typical procedures listed in the server's briefing. Then simply follow tower instructions after take-off.

The mission start time in the UK at 22.30 hrs is a bit too late. Also, I am not keen on Discord; it has been a right royal irritation in trying to set up, so I have deleted my account and have now removed it from my PC. I will enjoy the server in the week, but sadly these Sunday events are out for me.

Thanks for a good server.

Happy landings,

Hey Talisman,

Setting up new software can sometimes be a pain in the neck, and I certainly wouldn't want to do it with a ticking clock leading up to an event. But I definitely recommend giving it another shot later-- lots of DCS groups are moving to it.

On my server, Discord is really just a springboard to get your flight onto SimpleRadio, using the aircraft radios in your virtual cockpit. That's what's great about it. Another voice service like TeamSpeak isn't so useful for this-- it's just an extra, unnecessary link in the chain. Whereas Discord is more about keeping in touch through persistent text chat / message boarding-- the Voice feature is more of a bonus.

This is the kind of stuff people usually get up to in the Discord:

6aYQxEa.jpg

Someone will post an alert, you'll see it on Discord if you're around (or even on your phone if you choose). Then we hop into the server, and meet up in DCS on a pre-determined radio channel in the cockpit-- like you would in a real plane, following real radio operating instructions & procedures:

uUaYJmQ.jpg

We fly the entire flight that way. And if you crash / die / land & leave on the server (= lose radio contact in DCS), you still have a line of communication open on Discord, for debriefing or just saying "gg, see ya later."

8EIMfyE.jpg

Anyway, that's why you see tons of DCS servers switching to Discord, as SimpleRadio has become more and more popular. It's a winning combination. If you want help setting either program up during the week (when there is not a ticking clock leading up to an event) just shoot me PM and I'll try to meet you at a time & TeamSpeak channel of your choosing.

We'll do a few more events now and then, probably at different days/times. But the server is really all about the 24/7 PvP experience, so don't sweat missing any.

Big thanks to all who showed up and participated in tonight's event!

Red Team won big time! The bombers were annihilated. Given that this was our first event, there were a few snags, but overall the mission ran as intended and generated an intense aerial battle.

Server has resumed running normal missions, open 24/7. No need to wait for the next event-- drop in anytime!

  • 2 weeks later...

Hey, I am new to the server and the MiG-15 in general, but that is not the point.

I hopped in a for quick flight an hour ago, server was empty, so perfect time to see how stuff works. I got couple of questions regarding the server:

Okay, so first one is not really a question, but there was a mismatch between the callsign showing up in the text (top left corner) and what the ATC was calling me out as(what number he refers to me as).

He doesn't tell you which taxiway to take, but automatically tell me if I am clear for take off which is pretty neat. Don't know if you have made this ATC yourself, but is the first thing of this type I see and I am impressed.

In the briefing it says 3,80 for intercept, but when I took off, the tower told me to push 3,85 for intercept. Am I supposed to switch first to 3,8 and call in intercept and then switch to 3,85 ?

Well, I didn't get any calls what so ever, but after flying for some time I noticed the incoming contrails, which turned out to be the "bombers" (C-130s, I guess there isn't a real supplement for that era in the game)

Took 'em out (had no GCI calls what so ever, tried both 3,8 and 3,85 before engaging them).

On the way back I used my radio navigation to get to the airfield. When I was 10-15nm miles away I tried contacting tower, but nothing. So I tuned in to the DCS ATC for a bearing to the entrypoint and switched back to 3,75. Only when I got in visual range (as in when traffic controls says they have a visual on you) did the ATC respond (giving me a call to land opposite RWY, which I ignored as I was about go on final)

...and the last thing is, when I landed the ATC started calling out couple of other callsigns and me to hold position/ clear for take-off and such. Checked the player list, I was still alone, looked around on the airfield, didn't see other planes. What was that about ?

And bonus 2 question for more experienced MiG pilots:

When you rotate the receive wave knob on the left side is it supposed to automatically rotate the arm on the back right side radio panel ?... and still have signal strength ?

When I landed after landing I had decreased my speed and was rolling on the runway trying to reach the next taxi exit, when I noticed that I had lost brake pressure and I could barely break. Any idea why was that ? Overheated the brake liquid ?

Thank you in advance, I am looking forward to get in the action with people on SRS ;). I'd really like human ATC/GCI, but I guess the scripts are doing good enough of a job ( and most of all are always there ^.^ )

Actually the ATC is really nice done, doesn't know exactly where you found this 3,85khz but only remember 3.75 for ground control and 3.80 for interception.

The Radio Operation is done via F10 on the Server it is custom done, when I asked in the MIG ground tells me taxi to Runway 04.

Worked pretty well so far, when you ask on 3.8Khz F10+Intercept he is calling out the bombers..

When you rotate the Receive Knob it's automatically set up the Transponder simplification of the Radio equipment.

When you start with the Transponder on you right back Site you can set up different Wave Length on the Transponder/Receiver check Kneeboard there is a real Time Wave/frequency Chart.

Actually this helps not a lot because you doesn't want to speak and receive Radio Calls from two different Stations. (And don't know any Plane who have not a combined Receiver/Transmitter except MIG-15)

The Breaks are Russian Special gimmick as always and feeded with Air Pressure, so when you forget to bring your gear lever back in neutral Positions after the Landing Gear is retracted the System is running out of Air pressure so nothing left for Landing :D

Okay, so 3,75 for ATC, 3,8 for bomber intercept when you take-off and 3,85 for bullseye calls, which to be honest, are kind of rough, as you don't even have the bullseye on a waypoint (as there are non for the aircraft) or on the kneeboard and you have to open the F-10 map and recalculate nm to km on the move.

But yeah there are definitely miss matches between the text and the voice in russian. Text says 50km, voice says 40(in russian). Text says 9000, the russian voice says 8000 (or the other way around)

Ow and by the way on 3,8 when intercepting the "bombers" it gave my the same call outs 4 times which is not possible as the planes are not static, but the distance didin't change ( also I am guessing the calls for the Intercept are using the airfield as a reference ? )

Another questions, do the bombers just fly over the airfield and turn around and nothing happens or ?

Hi Shadow, there are indeed some bugs in the Russian ATC, I hopped on today and noticed what you are talking about. Will look into the mis-matched messages.

Correct, 3.75 for Tower, 3.80 for Intercept orders.

Yes, the other frequencies listed in briefing are for the bullseye calls. Each flight has its own pre-designated freq. to fly the mission on, to make it easier for you to coordinate via SimpleRadio. 3.85 is the frequency for Flight#1-0.

The Bullseye calls require some slight effort on your part, but the advantage is that everyone on your team who hears that message will receive situational awareness.

At the moment, most "bombers" do not drop ordnance, but on some days you may find a large flight of them that will "drop bombs" (trigger explosions) at Maykop + the red airfield.

EDIT:

* I think whether the F10 displays in nm or km can be changed in your own DCS user preferences, if you plan to fly the MiG on the server a lot, consider switching it.

* Thank you for you feedback-- as I do not speak Russian myself, I rely on feedback from Russian-speaking players to correct any mistakes I've made. = )
