Anyone with DCS on the new Ryzen CPU yet?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys.

I'm ramping up to get a new PC. I would have donne it already if the new AMD CPU's had more mature BIOS and compatible memory kits (see details below).

But I was wondering if this CPU is comparable with Intel ones for DCS.

Current desirable parts:

-Case: PHANTEKS P400S TG part number PH-EC416PSTG_WT

-ASUS CROSSHAIR hero VI AM4 motherboard

-Ryzen CPU model: TBD

-Seasonic Platinum 850W PSU

-Memory G-SKILL 32 GB DDR4 RGB@4000+Ghz when they are certified, if not might drop to other Trident-Z 3600 or 3200 kits

-Cooler: likely the NZXT Cracken X62 + 4 Corsair 140mm ML static pressure fans for push-pull

-Storage: SAMSUNG 960 EVO 1TB

-GFX: Vega or 1080 Ti (OMG)

So are there any of you out there with this new CPU that would be willing to share his experiences?

I am very interested to see some DCS specific comparisons with Ryzen myself.

The consensus amongst reviewers is that Ryzen excels at multithreaded tasks, but falls behind the 7700K in single thread performance. Slightly lower IPC and lower clock speeds are the culprit.

Knowing DCS is very single thread heavy, this would lead to a prediction that performance in DCS will be lower than a 7700K. Given that the Ryzen 7 series are priced similarly to the 7700K, the safe bet sounds to still be with Intel.

However, I'm very interested to see how much the difference will be. When the 6 and 4 core Ryzens come out, they will be much cheaper than the 7700K. If performance is close, it may prove a better value option.

Not to mention the AM4 platform probably has more future expandability than LGA1151...

Ryzen 7 5800X3D / Asus Crosshair VI Hero X370 / Corsair H110i / Sapphire Nitro+ 6800XT / 32Gb G.Skill TridentZ 3200 / Samsung 980 Pro M.2 / Virpil Warbrd base + VFX and TM grips / Virpil CM3 Throttle / Saitek Pro Combat pedals / Reverb G2

Yes! I recently built a new rig.

I have the Asus CH6. Asus has been coming out with new BIOS, like two in just the past week. And the latest 1001 BIOS is very good.

My memory with the other BIOS versions was only running at 2666mhz stable. But the new BIOS I'm at 3225mhz now.

I have my 1700 Ryzen running at 4.0GHz with 1.43v. I'm using the H110i AIO cooler.

This thing is a BEAST! I highly recommend using Ryzen for DCS.

DCS is well coded, and seems to be using more than just one thread. I see usage on DCS in one thread though being used more. And DCS process isn't even making my Ryzen sweat. Its only using about 15% CPU using right now.

I could use photoship, video encoding, watch 4k Youtube videos, etc. All with DCS running at the same time. And Ryzen handles it with ease.

where do you get the 1001 BIOS? I only see 902 on their official site:

https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/ROG-CROSSHAIR-VI-HERO/HelpDesk_Download/

glad to hear about your experience. One step closer to final selection. :)

There's a big thread on the Overlock.net site. Elmor the OP is an Asus Engineer.

Go here (all the BIOS versions links on on the first page).

I would highly reccomend the 1700 Ryzen, since there is really no reason to the 1800X or 1700X, when you can OC the 1700 to 4GHz.

What you see is DCS using up 2 cores

Hmm ok then. But the usage I was seeing in DCS was very low, like 15% usage in those threads.

Do you know if DCS, when they merge 1.5 and 2.0 versions, will they be using more cores?

and really only 1 core... like 1.5% on a second core just for sound... could have a 400mhz pentium 3 for the 2nd core...

Either way it would be nice if you could post some data on the performance and component utilization/temperatures (rivatuner/msi afterburner or whatever other program provides such details). Video would be preferable but I know not everyone has time for this kind of stuff.

Also, interesting thing is the fact that most games cant utilize even 6 cores / 12 threads so little difference might be between R5 1600X and R7 1800X:

Except of course for the price - half of the 1800X and for some extremely multi-threaded applications.

R5 1600X at 4.1 Ghz might be extremely good alternative to Intel since for the price of i5 7600k one can get it.

Well Battlefiled 1 Multiplayer uses all 16 threads, specially in 64 player games.

There might only be a few games now that can use 16 threads. But there will be more in the future utilizing them.

Also Photo editing, video encoding, 4k videos, etc. The Ryzen is a beast with all those!

I can load up Doom, Photoshop, Youtube 4k videos all at the same time, and Ryzen handles it easily without a sweat.

Here's some screenshots with some data you wanted.

I'd love to see a direct DCS comparison between an intel I7 (sandybridge up) and Zen. Somebody out there must be in that position.

+1 ...just which GPU to refer to as well ? 1080 or 1070 as a "default" maybe ??

If I had the parts I'd do it just out of curiosity :P

I'd like to see a 7700K or better overclocked to 5GHz with a reasonably inexpensive AIO water cooler and a 1080ti vs ryzen

also with 32gb of the same speed and latency ram, both running on m.2 SSDs

the 7700K is like 449$ CDN right now, and the 1800X is 669$, so...

bah probly not gonna happen...

also i think comparing a sandy to a current i7 or zen cpu, they'll kick its ass... even a sandy overclocked to 4.5ghz probly won't beat either...

The 2600k looses each and every battle vs the 7700k if you unleash both and let the 7700k oc as well, at least to some extend. At 5G it smokes it, even with the Sandy at 5G !

IPC wise the difference is roughly 200 Points in Passmark v9. 2800 vs. 3000 Points, both 5G.
