Up next: 1080 single card vs 1080 Ti single card vs 2080 Ti single card with Oculus Rift (with MSAA Off) on the i7-8700k and ASUS Maximus X Hero Z370 board.

Everything is exactly the same as Post #11 in this thread with the 411.70 drivers and the P-51 solo take off training mission in Batumi except that I am now using the i7-8700k and Maximus X Hero Z370 board (instead of the 7960x and my Rampage board) and with MSAA off. I overclocked the 8700k to 5.1 GHz at 1.38 volts. So, let's look at the exact numbers

For all the cards I set the following in System Options:

Text – High /Terrain – High /Traffic – High /Water – High / Visib Range – Extreme / Heat Blur – Low /Shadows – High / Resolution 1920 x 1080 /Aspect Ratio - 1.77 / Monitor – 1 Screen / Cockpit Display – 1024 Every Frame / MSAA – Off / DOF – Simple / Lens – Flare / Motion – On / SSAA – 2x / Grass Slider at 100% / Tree Slider at 100% / Preload Slider at 100% / Chimney Smoke at 35% / Gamma at 2.2 / AF – 16x / Terrain Shadows – Flat / Cockpit – On / Rain – Yes / All others unchecked.

(Notice that the only difference is that MSAA is off)

In VR Settings, I set Pixel Density (PD) to 1.5

And with two runs on each card using the Oculus Rift, here is what I got (averaged with FRAPS):

1080 – 53.9 FPS – Averaged 5.2% CPU usage

1080 Ti – 72.1 FPS – Average 5.3% CPU usage

2080 Ti – 91.3 FPS – Averaged 5% CPU usage

When I tried to take things up to Pixel Density 1.8 (which I consider the minimum for VR use in DCS), I averaged 38 FPS with the 1080 card, 58.6 FPS with the 1080 Ti and 76.1 FPS with the 2080 Ti. When I pushed for a PD of 2.0, I got 27.6 FPS with the 1080, 40.7 with the 1080 Ti and 53.2 FPS with the 2080 Ti. For kicks, I kept the above very high System Options and moved PD up to 2.5 with the 2080 Ti and got 32.5 FPS average.

The interesting take away is that the x299 motherboard appears to allow the 2080 Ti to peform better. Even though both the X299 and Z370 platform both allow a full 16x PCIe traffic load, the X299 is just more efficient, which allows the 2080 Ti to do better perhaps. I am not entirely sure this is the reason, ... a bit of a head scratcher right now. I will do some digging on this in the next few days. More info when I have it.....

Another update; I talked to the guys over in computer science, one lab in particular does a lot of VR experimentation and I asked them about something like the upcoming Pimax 8K. They showed me a custom built VR setup with the same resolution as the Pimax 8k but showing Google Earth Pro and some other apps. The resolution was excellent, they say it appears the same to the human eye as 1080 P does (almost), but the kicker is that they were powering it with 4 Titan GPUs!

I asked them how much work it would take for us to make an SLI patch for the Oculus SDK and they said they would look into it. In an ideal world, what would be best is if we could take 2 to 4 lower cost 1080 cards and use them to power the Pimax 8K or something similar. VR in DCS would really benefit from SLI. More details to follow as I get them....

Very interested in the results of the last paragraph. Oh, big time. I used to run several 980tis back in the day (multi GPU SLI), and would love to be able to harness the power of a couple 2080tis (or better even) IF it would benefit DCS and especially SLI even in other sims.

Great job Aurelius, this thread has been fantastic. I still have my 2080tis on backorder, have a 9900k/390 setup ordered too to replace my 6850 system, and then compare it to the 8700k systems with the 2080tis when I get them.

Thanks guys, my ultimate goal is to someday see DCSW or something like it, running at 4K resolutions in VR with no screen door effect. And right now, there is no way to get that without SLI or NV Link. But Nvidia has a horrible track record of supporting SLI and the amount of guys who will buy two 2080 cards I suspect is going to be like 3% of the market or less.

I do think we will see 4K like resolution in VR in DCS but not until perhaps 2025 or later. The VR experiment I saw yesterday took 4 Titan GPUs just to run a device similar to the upcoming Pimax 8K. ..... four fricking cards! So, in the coming months, the Pimax 8K may get released but unless they support multi-gpu in their drivers, then one 2080 Ti card is only going to power the Pimax 8K to settings that make you remember flight simming circa 2003 or so

Feeling lazy tonight but will post the SLI setup procedure and some other results here shortly .....

How are you getting over 100 FPS on a single 2080Ti in 4K? I have a OC MSI 2080TI X Trio with a I7 8700K OC to 5.1 Ghz, 32 Gigs of 3200 G Skill Ram. I'm using the same DCS graphics settings, except Motion – Off / SSAA - Off and only getting average of 75 FPS with mirrors off. I do use reshader but that only gain about 5 FPS when I turn it off. The MSI is OC at 7800 Mem, 2055 Core boost with voltage and temp at limits. I do notice with MSI Afterburner, DCS is only using about 7.5 gigs of video ram and not the full 11 gigs.

well,,, Im happy for you, but based on this thread alone, I would have to shell out about $ 1400 to get a 1080 Ti and VR headset for visual effects that are not quite up to what we want yet. Just my 2 cents anyway.

VR is the POSTER CHILD of the saying "don't let perfection be the enemy of good"

There are a TON of stuff that could be better. But to me, it does NOT detract from the feeling of immersion and taking flight. But I totally get that it's a personal choice and preference.
