How good is the Ka-50 flight model?

Recommended Posts

Ahm all will lead you to that end that the KA-50 is a big fun to fly. The Huey for sure is aswell, but i think it will get you boring faster than the "Shark". And it has more Equipment to learn about and to make use off.

Yurgon, Thanks for letting me know! I'm a night owl so the schedule might be ok for me to run with Germans, but I speak only English so that might be an issue. Do you guys have any videos of these operations I can watch?

Sorry, I probably worded that badly. Didn't mean to recruit you. ;)

The squad is only a couple of months old and not currently recruiting. I hope they'll have videos and other stuff up soon, but so far I think there are no videos yet. Some impressions can be found in our forum, though.

In any case, I mostly wanted to show that there are definitely dedicated Huey squadrons, and I can't imagine that ours is the only one.

I was just referring to the actual shooting which appears to be find a good spot and autohover while you aim and shoot with the camera.

Pretty much, but this really doesn't make it boring or unexciting as there's a lot to do in the cockpit and it still takes skill to employ the chopper in a very effective way. Even with all the amazing autopilot functionality it's still quite a hands-on machine and the shooting part is only a small fraction of the fun I get from the Ka50; the main enjoyment and satisfaction is actually flying smoothly to the target, tactically finding that good spot, scouting the location and relaying targets and coordinating with your wing (labels off to make this even more fun).

It takes quite a while and a lot of practice to really get to know all of its quirks and characteristics which makes it feel very real and believable, but then once you do the real fun starts as you become an unstoppable killing machine. It's probably the most effective offensive aircraft in the game so far, I tend to be able to rack up quite a lot of kills with minimal risk.

Though having said that, there are some great missions where you also have to watch out for hostile aircraft and tanks aiming non-laser-guided weapons towards you which will offer no warning, not to mention frantically trying to lock onto a hostile helicopter flying towards you and get a missile off before they do. Being down in the thick of things with something of an analog bird can get very exciting!

Thanks for that reply, that is exactly the kind of testimony I was looking for.

I have decided for the time being to focus on the Huey first, but I'll be tinkering around in the Ka-50 and maybe get serious about it after a few months of hardcore Huey time. I prefer not to have auto-hover etc. but I do really like the feeling of the Ka-50 on my motion sim in VR and what you describe definitely sounds like it could be fun.

I bought the Ka 50 in 2008 and was completely knocked out with the detail of the cockpit and complexity of the systems.

It was indeed touted as a military sim, which was expanded for gaming use, so you have to believe it's as good as it gets.

It proved too difficult for me to get to grips with and my interest waned, but then I found myself on a job with 6 hours free every night and nothing to do but watch TV and porn.

So I thought, I can use this time more usefully and decided to give up watching TV, in order to concentrate all my efforts on mastering these complicated weapons.

At the end of 3 weeks, after pounding the practice targets and completing my first mission, I made a video and showed it to my crew.

I have never used it since.

Man, I can only imagine how awesome the Huey would be with a VR headset. Of course any of the aircraft would be, but the Huey looks especially fun to fly with one (and in general).

I watched

the other day and it really made me want to learn the aircraft and start flying it online. Even though I've had the module for ages I never got around to actually doing anything with it.

In fact I have almost all of the modules but I just love the Ka50 too much to fly anything else, though I'm probably a little biased as I was flying this thing back when it was just "Black Shark", and there were dozens of serves filled with people all flying missions together.. and there weren't Spitfires flying alongside A10s and MiGs. Those were the golden days :)

Anyway please excuse my fond ramblings.

The flight model is a dream. I have been flying her since April 2009. It did take me a while to master the flight controls and I won't get into the whole trimmer debate. What is in the manual is very accurate and that is how I fly her. Once you do master her, it will be the easiest helo to fly. It is funny to watch others weave and bob and I am holding manual, rock steady, hovers and I think its easy. That is years of practice. One of my favs is to drift sideways and fire missiles. Now I fly the Shark with my Rift, forget about it!

I've been in the KA50 for a while now and am proficient in it. Its much easier flying choppers in VR than on a flat screen - I got VR and never missed the middle of the landing pad at the FARP after that. Thing with the KA 50 and VR, you need a mod to be able to spot targets at a realistic distance in VR. I bought the huey and gazelle as much as I love the KA50, i wanted to test the survivabilty of the gazelle - it has RWR and Infra Red so i can finally do night missions they way the should be done. Even during the day - you can spot a target using white hot with no mods in the Gazelle. Much more realistic. While people say the huey is harder, i think its just different - if you can fly a chopper in DCS it will take you much less time to become proficient. I think the Gazelle offers the most entertainment at the moment chopper wise as its nimble, lightly armed and can operate fully at night.

I agree with everything you said, Scooternutz! It sounds like we are much the same :)

It's funny, right at the start I couldn't imagine memorising all of those switches for a cold start, it seemed overwhelming, yet now it's almost second-nature.. almost ridiculously easy to start her up. Compared to the other modules which are just banks of switches with an airframe attached, the Ka-50's cockpit is elegantly streamlined.

@Frakin' Toasters If you can get yourself to NorthEast Pennsylvania you can come try out not only flying in VR, but in a pit (Huey now under construction), on a 6DOF motion sim, with SimShaker for Aviators; four transducers and Jetseat. =O The SSA VRS vibration alone is amazing in the Huey.

It's a dream come true for me, but on the other hand I'll be paying it off on my credit cards for several years now LOL.

I'm really looking forward to building that Ka-50 pit too! My rig is modular, so in fifteen minutes or so I'll be able to swap cockpits, or even swap to a Rally Racing setup.

Gee that's one of the best invitations I've ever had! Thanks mate.

I sure would give my right arm to come and test that out, though unfortunately I live in Australia. But if I'm ever out that way I'll keep it in mind, haha.

Something like that is a bit of a dream of mine too, if only to have the seat, vibration and motion simulators; you're a lucky guy!

Wow, that's more or less the farthest you could be from me and still be sharing the same planet LOL. Land of the Drop Bears and everything alive trying to kill you! Still I guess you never know when you might suddenly find yourself taking a trip to New York City, it's only 2 hours drive away. If you cross the globe I'll pick you up at JFK or Newark Aiport =P.

It's very nuanced. I can't tell you specifically how it handles compared to the real aircraft, but it's not a dumbed-down, simplified flight model. At the very least, it has high "truthiness". Sometimes I suspect the shark's a little too squirrely overall, but my biggest nitpick is probably the VRS in the sim, IMO, allows too much static-collective roll/pitch authority, and horizontal velocity (caused by roll/pitch obviously) seems to have less effect preventing or alleviating (get out of) VRS than it should. I don't see much of any stick authority reduction in VRS, nor increase in such authority by further dropping the collective. Basically, very big stick input or some counter-intuitive dropping of the collective and less-needed stick input should get you out of it. And seems like VRS happens with a little too much such horizontal helo movement currently. It's sort of nitpicking, though. We're blessed with a sim that has VRS at all and nuance and full aerobatics, while not feeling like a lightweight RC aircraft.

Love the shark and my main flyer, especially in VR! Online, really great especially when there are jet hunters in the air and game is avoidance.

Had a memorable moment the other night where myself and another shark flyer took off from Sukhumi, he flying lead, headed south toward target area. All of a sudden my RWR began beeping/flashing from rear threat. I dropped alt to treetops, kept resetting and it continued to flash while I looked for terrain cover along with a quick reverse to check six. Lo and behold a M2000 was screaming in on the deck with a missile away, blowing lead back to the spectators seat. I remained low and in the terrain and had a few more spikes on the RWR while the jet continued to hunt, but was able to keep locks off. Friendlies came in and above me a low level aerial dogfight among a number of jets ensued. Really fantastic sight, especially in VR! I remained low, and continued to target area unhindered by jets. Took out a few mobile sams, but was smoked by an BMP that saw me first... fun night!

Hi there! I think I might add to the discussion. First of all from all the information I gathered through the years the Black Shark module was the first module by ED of such a high level of complexity, for an aircraft inherently complex in itself. It was the time just before ED started getting military contracts (DTS for A-10C is the first publicly known) and we may well assume ED used the Black Shark module as a demonstrator of their capabilities as a developer of highest Fidelity high-complexity vehicle simulations.

Also, here's an official demonstration of their rotor model featuring individual rotor blade model with multiple segments per blade
