R9 290 vs GTX 680 Benchmark & Comparison

Are you sure with that "early next year"? Your statement implies the 1st half of the year, but considering my experience with ED, I'm rather skeptical...

Pilotasso was probably referring to this implied time frame, some of us like to be optimistic :)

WAGS: It's always that last 10%...

Over the last few months, the team has made tremendous progress on both the NTTR art assets and getting EDGE working in DCS. Although we had hoped to have this wrapped up by the end of the year (never promised), I don't see that happening. There are half a dozen art issues that need to be resolved, EDGE integration into DCS will probably not be completed until Mid-December, and beta testing of the map within DCS has of course not been able to start yet.

Nevertheless, progress is being made... just not as fast as we all would like.

I've attached a short video showing some of the areas outside the airbases and downtown Las Vegas.

That sound to me like waaay far from being released, not to mention notoriously over-optimistic Wag's statements (no offence)...

Taking into account sparse info we have, I see the second half of the next year (2014) as more realistic release-date of at least "somehow" usable version of the EDGE. And I would be extremely surprised if we get non-beta EDGE-based DCS:World before the end of the year 2014...

Thanks for the info, I have just bought an R9 290 along with a new MB CPU RAM PSU and SSD.

One thing I have read in reviews of the 290 is the cards tendency to be quite loud.

Do you have any issues with fan noise levels under load? if so have you done anything to rectify?

Kind regards

Dave.

To answer my own query, regards the 290's noise levels, so far, I am very happy with the silence, granted I have only ran BF4 with no discernible change in noise level.

The big test will come once I have DCS installed which will be once I acquire a second dedicated SSD to install it on.

Appreciate if someone could advise me on the size of SSD to install DCSW A10C and BS2 on? I understand that getting the biggest capacity is usually the best way to go however, the price of SSD's at the biggest volumes makes these prohibitive to me :(

will be interested on the performance of the r9 290 with DCS as this is the card I am considering

With the SSD's I have a 60gb, but I wish I had saved for a bigger one, especially with rumours on future maps sizes.

I would go 120gb plus to be safe

I'll let you know how it performs once installed, I've ordered a new 120Gb drive - should arrive tomorrow so, I'll hopefully get DCSW installed tomorrow night.

Thanks again for your help\advice....

Glad to hear you are happy with your setup Dave! I don't experience any issues with fan noise. That's never been a concern of mine anyway, but just to give a late response, my case is on the floor, under my desk about 2-3ft from my ears. With a game on I've never noticed the fans going at all.

As for SSD, I have windows and several games all on a 180 gb and I've still got 74 gigs free. It's best if you have a secondary HDD to store miscellaneous stuff on and keep the SSD for your primary programs.

Again, glad you're happy with the 290. This late after release, I'm guessing yours is non-flashable? I got mine the day after release and I ended up with the first Non-Flashable version. If I had ordered day of I might have gotten lucky like other folks have.

I received a gigabyte GTX770OC for christmas from my wife (Hurray).

Coming from a ATI HD5870 (yeah, at this time, the company was yet named ATI...), it's a day/night difference in DCS! Now, I can place all sliders far to the right and mod it like a brute without any problem.

And the thing I made was to re-install Metro: Last light to (finally) play it all maxed out. And it runs fine (just finished the game. It's sometimes... creepy but the story is interesting, the action is very good, well balanced,... I recommend).

So, GTX770OC rocks! (OK, ok, to be honest, a SLI of this would be... What you wrote, Dav? Yes: Mind blowing!)

GTX 770 is great value.

And if OC-ed it's not that far from reference 780. Mine is pushed to 1.25 GHZ GPU, 8GHZ memory - stable as a rock @ 74 degrees for one hour of Furmark and 65 degrees in everything else.

I've run the benchmark track from the OP in standard 1920x1080p resolution. Here are the FRAPS results (GTX 770 @ 1.25GHZ, i5-4670K @ stock):

Avg: 51.781 - Min: 34 - Max: 80

My settings in DCS (with following tweaking in line 150 of graphics.lua: structures = {20, 10000};):

  • 1 year later...

Sorry to dig up such an old thread, but I have a GTX 970 and I'm really pissed off at Nvidia for lying about the specs. I'm in discussions with Nvidia and Newegg about returning it, but since DCS favors Nvidia GPU's so much, I did a search for R9 290 performance since I would most likely replace the GTX 970 with a 290x if they let me return it.

Here are my results using the same in game settings as OP with the exception of resolutions as noted:

2560x1440

1) Avg: 40.159 - Min: 40 - Max: 41

2) Avg: 39.271 - Min: 29 - Max: 49

3135x1764

1) Avg: 32.788 - Min: 32 - Max: 33

2) Avg: 32.428 - Min: 24 - Max: 38

OC CPU to 4.7

3135x1764

1)Avg: 32.713 - Min: 32 - Max: 33

2)Avg: 32.523 - Min: 24 - Max: 38

OC CPU to 4.7 & GPU to 1500MHz

3135x1764

1)Avg: 35.485 - Min: 35 - Max: 36

2) Avg: 35.263 - Min: 26 - Max: 41

Sadly, I may be keeping the GTX 970. Looks like I'll have to stick it to Nvidia when EDGE is released and the Radeon 300 series comes out.

Hopefully my numbers can help someone though.

Hey there,

I still get emails from this thread, no worries on late adds.

If I'm reading your numbers right, you're getting 35 fps on each bench on high settings? Thats pretty good and better than you'd get on a 290x I would think.

Also, I dont think DCS favors nvidia or radeon. In my own experience benchmarking, it just doesn't like multi-gpu setups...until edge of course.

Unless im misreading your results, the 970 is performing solidly. R9 300 cards will be good but my 2 cents is wait for those and edge's release before switching out.
