- Square/rectangular

- Ovals

- The ability to resize/re-proportion the above

- The ability to angle the above

It would also be nice if you were able to draw your own shape. Maybe even have an altitude option, for example the trigger zone begins at 3000ft and ends at 10000ft.

If you want to get your hands a little dirty with scripting, this can be done with moose, using a units waypoints. Would be nice if it was default tho.

Only problem I don't know how to script it. I don't suppose you know any good places where you can learn how to do this?

You can have a zone with altitude conditions in the vanilla ME, but using the conditions UNIT INSIDE ZONE, UNIT'S (MSL/AGL) ALTITUDE HIGHER THAN and UNIT'S (MSL/AGL) ALTITUDE LOWER THAN.

I completely agree with the sentiment that we should have more control over zone design though.

+ absolutely 1

Being able to configure the shape of trigger zones is a dream come true. Having just rectangular zones would be a pretty big step in the right direction.

MIST ( scripting ) has polygonal trigger zones, iirc. Doing an in-zone check for a circle is obviously very simple ( just check for distance to centre ), but checking you're in a polygon of not many sides is a well solved problem, I think most of the time would be spent doing the mission editor UI part...

freeform and complex polygons would be tricky, triangles & non-parallelogram rectangles would be simple though.

Define two points and orient them both towards a 3rd point.

Give each a number of degrees + / - from their orientation, and the zone is where the object is where those overlap (which will be somewhere between a triangle and nearly a square - anyway the calc is simple - and(object bearing from point a between x degrees and y degrees, object bearing from point b between v degrees and w degrees)

If both are true, it's in the zone, if one or none are, it's not

Cheers.
