Planning a new "Gamer" build - requesting feedback

Recommended Posts

Hola group,

I've been running my current rig for the last 5 years, (specs are in the sig). Kinda getting the bug to upgrade. Would appreciate feedback regarding a proposed gamer BOM.

What I thought of buying new:

i7-9700k

Noctua NH-D15 CPU cooler

Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Ultra MB

32GB (2x16) DDR4 RAM (curious to hear a recommendation)

500GB NVMe M.2 SSD (Samsung?)

Seasonic Prime Ultra 750W titanium Power Supply

Win 10 Pro...

Computer case (hunting around for this as well)

I plan to reuse these for a bit:

GTX 1080 (until a later date)

Soundblaster Z sound card

Oculus Rift CV1 (to be replaced at a later date as well)

Would appreciate some feedback and guidance.

TIA,

-Jav

ps. the rig will be dedicated to DCS, ArmA3, the other flight sim, and anything VR.... :-)

I will go for a Focus Plus Gold. Gold certifier is enough for a single and dual video card system. This PSU is warranty for 10 years, so you have to figure what components you will have during that time. If you expect to go on SLI? Get something bigger. It's not a future proof question, the real question is how much are you addicted to DCS :D

Case - Lian Li O11 Dynamic or Air version. Superb Airflow and visuals (not that I care for visuals on a computer but a lot do). W10 is spyware. Do you play ArmA3 EUTW mod?

thanks for the case suggestion. Will research it further.

I've heard of EUTW, but have not played it.

Going with Win10 because of the driver and binary support... ;) Otherwise, I'd stick with Win8.1. (yep, it's been a great O/S for me).

I'm flipping a coin... i7-9700k or i9-9900k. the later being about $80 more...

Lots buddy! For my gamer rig, I'm generally using it for flying DCS about 85-90% of the time. Followed by that other flight sim, and then ArmA3 and other VR titles... ;)

Just got the 9700k n I love it. It slaughters old CPU intensive games like DCS. Don’t need hyper threading for my situation so it works very well IMHO plus can always go up to 9900k if it becomes necessary to have lots of cores.

If you're not locked into blue, then I'd just wait the two months to see what Ryzen3 has to offer. At the moment with Vulcan still not implemented, IPC is king as far as DCS is concerned, but Ryzen 3 is supposed to equal current coffee lake cpu's as far as IPC is concerned, not to mention they are on a 7nm die, which theoretically could mean greater overclocking potential - as far as heat is concerned.

Ryzen9 5800X3D, Gigabyte Aorus X570 Elite, 32Gb Gskill Trident DDR4 3600 CL16, Samsung 990 Pr0 1Tb Nvme Gen4, Evo860 1Tb 2.5 SSD and Team 1Tb 2.5 SSD, MSI Suprim X RTX4090 , Corsair h115i Platinum AIO, NZXT H710i case, Seasonic Focus 850W psu, Gigabyte Aorus AD27QHD Gsync 1ms IPS 2k monitor 144Mhz, Track ir4, VKB Gunfighter Ultimate w/extension, Virpil T50 CM3 Throttle, Saitek terrible pedals, RiftS

sure. except neither of those timeless OS’s are supported anymore

What do you need a "supported" OS (up to date 100% of the time) for a gamer rig for? You don't. Don't fall for memes if you don't have an "up to date" OS suddenly your computer stops working forever, it doesn't.

... but Ryzen 3 is supposed to equal current coffee lake cpu's as far as IPC is concerned, not to mention they are on a 7nm die, which theoretically could mean greater overclocking potential - as far as heat is concerned.

We wish, atleast I really do.

One thing I do have, is time. :) I usually spend a month or two researching big ticket items, and then pull the trigger.

if you wait until next year there will be other options too.

and if the VR performance improvement comes through very soon, I probably could wait it out.

Honestly, I have the 9700k and its fine. The 9900k does have more cache though, so it will perform better, plus you get hyperthreading for non-DCS stuff. The main reason I went with the 9700k was that I bought "half built" and just threw a GFX card in it. And for anything other than DCS the 9700k will be fine.

New hotness: I7 9700k 4.8ghz, 32gb ddr4, 2080ti, :joystick: TM Warthog. TrackIR, HP Reverb (formermly CV1)

Old-N-busted: i7 4720HQ ~3.5GHZ, +32GB DDR3 + Nvidia GTX980m (4GB VRAM) :joystick: TM Warthog. TrackIR, Rift CV1 (yes really).

If you never go to ANY other site than DCS, I suppose you minimize the danger. But there will come a day when some peripheral will not work because the said vendor didn't test it with Win7. Not today, not next month, but in two years? Maybe. Then what will you do?

And if you do VR, Win10 is a *MUST*.

That is like 5 years out, Windows 7 is epic and it's obvious to many what Windows 10 does is a bit too obvious. Especially when you ask yourself why they suddenly gave a new OS to everyone for free ... = get as many people to use it as possible.

Then what will you do?

Migrate to a non Windows OS because a huge amount of people will decide against a Windows 10 spyware on their system and thus make Linux distros work for their games for example if they don't do it by now. Microsoft also might decide to not let support for Windows 7 end too soon if at all because they know they would lose a considerable amount of security aware users to the competition. As a last resort I will be forced to use Windows 10 for certain things and this makes it undeniable what's up isn't it?

in my own world, I have updated the last "7" to 10 last week, only 1 2008R2 is still running. Once Sage supports SRV2019 I will upgrade that one too.

This is a repeating thing every couple years. For some it is tears, for some it is just work without any personal drama ( like me ).

Just curious, for your 7 to 10. Are you performing an upgrade, or a complete new install of the O/S?

Wow. In a world of Google, Facebook, and *EVERY* web page with cookies, people will revolt against Win10? Perhaps. But I grew up with Linux, Mac OS, and Windows. I'll take any OS that gives me the best game performance. And more importantly, *available* games. So that would be Windows for me.
