DME in the F5

Is there any Distance Measuring Equipment in the F5? In the L39 you can dial in a course and distance manually.

Can this be done in the F5? At the moment in navigation I am reliant in dialing in a course drawn on the map from my icon. But I can't specify a distance.

You can use TACAN stations in a similar way the L-39 uses RSBN stations.

However the F-5 lacks INS, so can't use 'dead reckoning' if the TACAN signal is out of range or line of sight is blocked unlike the L-39's RSBN-5.

Yeah, there's only 5 airfields with TACAN stations

  • Kobuleti - 67X "KBL"
  • Vaziani - 22X "VAS"
  • Kutaisi - 44X "KTS"
  • Senaki - Kolkhi - 31X "TSK"
  • Batumi - 16X "BTM"

How on earth did the F5 navigate during Vietnam?

The South Vietnamese only used their F-5s to do bombing in South Vietnam. The light fighter never faced a North Vietnamese MiG. Given the F-5’s high speed and great maneuverability, it could have been a good adversary for the MiG-17, MiG-19, and even the MiG-21.

Some air forces like swiss af implemented INS in their F5E. Since the usn aggressors fly swiss tigers i guess they also are equiped with INS. Maybe belsimtec will do so in a update.

For non-precision navigation, you can use the ADF, as well.

You must switch from tacan to df direction finder on the nav mode panel ,than put the uhf radio to adf and import the frequency

Yep. Input the NDBs frequency in the UHF radio and switch from TCN mode to ADF mode. But if you use ADF, you can't use the radio. Just a note.

But that should be enough for VFR aproaches. If you don#t know, how to set manual NDB stations, watch this:

Note: You have to use UHF frequencies, instead of the shown VHF/FM frequencies in the video. Type them without the comma, 325500 (325.500) for instance.

Yep. Or VHF (AM/FM), whatever frequency you enter. But you need a unit and a trigger zone, as well.

You forgot a timer. So plot the legs, measure the distance, calculate airspeed allowing for climb, decent, atmospheric conditions and magnetic declination, take note of obvious landmarks, and then time the leg, cross checking your progress using landmarks as a reference as long as the surface was visible. Peice of cake :smilewink:
