Let's talk Datalink

Recommended Posts

What are some of the best practices that you guys are using for Datalink in multiplayer?

Do you change freq from your takeoff airfield to a custom one just for datalink?

Does the "squad leader" (ID:1) assign targets to rest of the flight?

Do you use Datalink for mapping routes? (ingress points, etc)

I have only just started to dip into this feature and am curious how people are using it, and if there are any best practices emerging in the community. The manual itself is fairly light on description and use cases for datalink.

Most of the time, once on the EA, the leader is directing the deployment around the possible target locations. Once everybody on the BP (Battle Position), they are starting scanning and are sharing through DL the targets they are detecting to all of the flight. Then the leader can direct the engagement based on the tactical picture he got. In less frequent cases, we can also use DL to point at BP or Ingress Points.

Regarding the frequency, it really depends on the complexity of the mission and the amount of players. In a simple 4 Ka50 mission, we don't really bother changing frequency.

The Datalink shares the UHF/VHF radio of the KA50 and, therefore, any change in frequency will need to be adressed by all pilots in the wing.

We, in the 132nd, usually employ human ATC, AWACS and JTACs during our training and combat mission, all multiplayer ofcourse.

When starting up the KA50, it's the FlightLead (FL) who makes the calls to ATC on the normal VHF frequency and uses the R-828 FM radio to talk to the other flight members.

All other flight members start up their KA50 once clearance is given and will report "Timber Sweet" to FL to let him know they have him on ABRIS.

When the flight gets pushed to another another frequency, FL will tell the flight members to "Push Tblisi approach, 127.200" on the R-828 and will receive "Timber Sweet" once the individual members have switched frequency.

If the datalink is not working, the call is "Timber Sour" and will require some additional handling to get it up and running again.

Once in the AO (Area of Operations) it's the FL who decides who goes where and using DL to mark targets and IP's will make a battle plan to complete the mission objectives.
