What happened to map development?

In an FAQ Heatblur lists the Tomcat map as a cold and oceany map, which to me sounds like the Northern Atlantic between Greenland, Iceland, Scotland and Norway, where Tomcats would have to defend the fleets operating around the GIUK gap as well as Iceland and the norwegian coast.

Or it could just be the caucasus during winter. :P

Honestly a map is a huge undertaking and the original post was from more than 4 years ago where they were still together with Leatherneck. I'd rather let ED and specially dedicated 3rd parties like Ugra Media take care of the maps in order to not delay current aircraft projects and roadmaps even more.

Thanks, I was expecting changes, which is why I asked. That the Pacific project is not beeing pursued by Heatblur is no suprise (as the F-4U is a LNS/M3 project), but what about the Viggen and Tomcat theatres? Are they dead?

For now, yes. Please do not get your hopes high on that, unless we say otherwise, which at the moment does not seem likely. What the future may hold, of course no one can know.

So Cobra's answer to that question is not valid anymore now? :(

Priorities and available resources change, I'd rather have HB invest their time and resources into the aircraft modules than any map development. We have ED and other 3rd parties who are already doing a great job with maps.

But none of them will do a map for the Viggen...

It is still valid. Please note that I said "for now". It is just unsure at the moment and most likely will not happen in the nearest future, hence I do not want you guys to have your hopes up high for something that might turn out to be a longer wait than initially expected.

My proposal is, let's deal with it as a common wish for the time being, and wish lists do not get erased. But not all wishes come true, ofc, hence I just want to be careful. Hope that makes sense.

I've never expected those maps anywhere in the near futures. I can see that you guys are busy with other things and have probably not even started with map development as of now (although there once was talk of a HB team in Poland responsible for map development). So my question is rather in the sense of "Does HB still have the will and the intent to make this happen at somepoint somewhere in the future, whenever that will be, or have those plans been scrapped entirely by now?"

Whats the problem with having a fictional theater? The Viggen fits anywhere, really.

Uhm, no, the Viggen has never been used anywhere else outside of Sweden, so I would like to be able to recreate that and not just having to stick to fictional stuff. If you don't understand it, then so be it.

We'd never scratch any plans entirely and the will is always there, it is just something not really worth talking about at the moment, maybe that puts it better. It does not occupy our minds at the moment, as Viggen and Tomcat still take that place. Pressing us for an answer now whether it is a definitive yes or no, is just something we cannot comply with at this point, as we cannot tell ourselves yet. We'd love to, and then I guess: let us see what will come. :)

I know this will not satisfy you, how could it, and my apologies for that. When we know more, we will let you know.

As I said before, I'm not expecting a definitive answer on it atm, as I can very well see that you guys are very much occupied with work on other things, so this answer is fair enough and allows me to keep dreaming that it might happen somewhere in the future :)

I don’t think we’ll see HB develop anymore. In my opinion they will finish their commitments with regards to the remaining items for the F-14 and Viggen but no development of additional modules for DCS will occur. Simply maintenance for F-14 and Viggen in response to core DCS changes.

Would be happy to be wrong but sadly don’t think I will be.

Not sure where you guys keep taking this from... We said, we don't want to talk about the future, until we finished what we started. That doesn't mean that there won't be a future.

But I know how it is, ya'll need to keep trying. We need to stand steadfast. That's totally ok, hehe.

I'm also really scratching my head what makes you think that?

Maybe listen into the following interview and you get a better idea on what's actually going on:

Hi Quigon, thanks for sharing the link!!

For all Viggen drivers ... start listening at m48:s00

Wasn't aware of the - obvious - fact, that maintaning the "older" code is a bigger bunch of effort, in order to keep the module running during DCS's lifetime.

I am sure the guys at HB understand the "whining" that things happen too slow, but on the other hand this means that we all (at least me ... :D ) do want our beast to be finished, only because we love it so much.

Their attitude/plan to finish things first before starting bigger new things is the one I can totally live with.

Since the way for the F-14 to be "finished" some day in the future seems a longer one, I really would appreciate the idea of focussing on the Viggen for a few weeks to have it eventually "finished", rather than having both projects running in parallel.

But thats just my opinion. Don't know how I could support them on their journey, but I wish I could.

I think it comes from the fact that every other developer in DCS has announced some plan beyond existing modules, and you guys have not. Not that it matters because it's just different companies doing business differently, but yeah.

While that sounds pretty reasonable at first, it's not necessarily true, because an F-14 dev might not be familiar with the Viggen code and would have to familiarize himself first, which is rather ineffecient.
