OVERLORD - The ultimate Normandy SP Missions

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Ever since the release of Normandy I've been working on something big. I dreamed up a single mission where you would spawn either parked or in the air, and everything around you would be a blank canvas, and it's up to you what you feel like painting. You can tune your radio to local radio channels - sometimes more than one - listen to Axis Sally, Lord Haw-Haw, or the latest CBS news, and many, many great songs from the 40s.

Select your task from your radio menu under F10 and units will come alive. Fighter Sweeps, Ground attacks, Intercepts, Escorts, Scrambles... What's even better is that each task is randomized to some extent, so you don't always face the same number of enemy at the same place and with the same AI level. You can re-play the mission over 50 times before you face the same situation.

There are also some easter eggs such as voice acting thanks to Compans, Datek, and Rakuzard. The missions are using my skins, CLICK HERE to download them for a better experience, as well as KZIR's B-17 skins HERE

The mission is still in beta, I will improve it once we get more AI planes and units, I just didn't want to wait a year until they're all released. I tried not to overdo the units keeping performance in mind, but in the current state of 2.1 it wasn't always possible. I hope you will like them, I put hundreds of hours in these, so I'm looking forward to hearing your feedback.

Wow! Great work!

Thank you!

"Yeah, and though I work in the valley of Death, I will fear no Evil. For where there is one, there is always three. I preparest my aircraft to receive the Iron that will be delivered in the presence of my enemies. Thy ALCM and JDAM they comfort me. Power was given unto the aircrew to make peace upon the world by way of the sword. And when the call went out, Behold the "Sword of Stealth". And his name was Death. And Hell followed him. For the day of wrath has come and no mercy shall be given."

The best is to put them all in this folder:

C:\Users\*yourusername*\Saved Games\DCS.openalpha\Liveries

Example B-17G Hey Daddy skin goes to:

C:\Users\*yourusername*\Saved Games\DCS.openalpha\Liveries\B-17G\322nd BS - 91st BG_LG-H_Hey Daddy

I downloaded all the missions and played the first mission for each plane. GREAT JOB! The period radio broadcasts are a real treat! I would call these mini-campaigns rather than single missions which makes them even better. My only suggestion is perhaps toning down the fighter contrails somewhat. They look a little overdone in my opinion. The B17 contrails look very good and proper. I had to tone down my graphics settings to keep a decent frame rate (I only have a relatively weak GTX 1050 card) which I think was due to the all the contrails along with the thick clouds. I love flying through your thick clouds! I always wondered why DCS rarely models thick clouds you can fly through like Cliffs of Dover. I thought it was it was just not possible until I saw your beautiful work. Cant wait to see your future updates to these excellent missions.

The mission designer has no control over the visual effects such as contrails; these simply occur under the correct atmospheric conditions. Here's a period photo showing a similar scene.

topcoverphotow.jpg

Weather, however, -is- under the mission maker's control! If you'd like to add weather to any unprotected mission, simply open it in the mission editor and click the cloud icon on the left side of the screen.

You can set the cloud base, a relative thickness between 1 and 10, temperature, and toggle precipitation and fog. If you know a little about meteorology you can even create pressure systems and have dynamic weather. (stormy in one area, clear in others.)

Downloaded it the other day and made it multiplayer. I post the Mustang Ace Cold start version on my server and had a couple of squad members and a few random players join in. We had a blast!

Here are a couple of observations, for the Cold version, move the bomber spawn positions over England otherwise they have hit the target and are heading home before you get across the channel.

There did not appear to be any en fighters spawned to attack the mission to Rouen.

Also, did you start using the WWII bomber mod at some point? It might add some variety until the Asset Pack gets updated.

Thanks for the feedback!

If you don't like the clouds, you can change the coverage in ME. Equally, you can remove the contrails by raising the temperature.

@Rob: If you start on the ground in England/ France, you need to fly to WP1 as the briefing says before you activate one of the missions, right where the air start mission begins. The distance and timings are calculated from there. I will check the Rouen mission, although that particular one has 7 different combos of attacking fighters. Sometimes you get more than you can handle. Did you try it just once, or several times?

Check your settings, I think there are 2 buttons: "radio push to talk button" and "comms menu" - try both.

I tried one of the FW-190D missions. I figured out the comms, and was able to pick a mission, but never saw any enemy a/c, nor could I get ATC to respond to things like heading info.

Also, how do I pick from your skins I have downloaded?

I think you have created some really great missions for us. Looking to see them in MP.

Cheers

The mission name has a general location in it. Fly there, and be patient. The enemy will come sooner or later. If you want to "cheat" a little, check out the map view (F10) and see where the enemy is. You can also hit F2 to cycle through all the aircraft in the air.

But again, like the briefing says: make sure you select the mission upon reaching WP1 (where the airstart mission begins) not while you are on the ground.
