Engine just blows up.

Texas Hood

So I'm getting back into DCS and am flying the Huey, when all of the sudden the engine apparently blows up mid flight. I thought this was just a bug with the training missions so I started a Campaign and I'm flying along at a level 4,000' at 90-100 knots and the engine just blows up. I'm really confused by this. Is there a bug or an update that I missed? I'm on 2.5 right now, it just updated a couple of days ago.

Thanks for any help.

Howdy,

EGT is modelled in the Huey...make sure you keep the EGT in the green or it will overheat and die on you. going over the green temporarily is ok for takeoff when heavy...but prolonged use will send you out of the sky like a brick :D

Thanks guys. Yea I've doing that so far but I will double check it again the next time I go flying. It has happened on every single flight I did sometimes within a couple of minutes of flight sometimes after about 20 min.

I used to fly this bird all the time and never had this problem, it's very strange. Once again guys, thanks.

The EGT limits were implemented only a couple of patches ago, so If you had a longer break from DCS, you will need learn a few new habits for flying the Huey safely.

Are you using a warthog throttle? If so make sure all the settings for the throttle including the switches are in the neutral position I had one switch that was showing up as active in the tm app and the huey blew up everytime I neutralize that switch and thinks when as expected I’m sorry I don’t recall the switch as I was only using the tm wh as a temp solution while my puma was down with a broken USB port on the pc board while I awaited the new board.

Does anybody of you know if we will see a modified EGT Limit model?

EGT can't be the first Limit in low altitude, even at high temperatures...

Yes, work is in progress, last update on BST's status was Friday.

now we update our work for fixes this issues (F-18C gave us some freedom)

• To put Friday's post in context:

Thank you guys for being involved! Our helicopter department specialists have an idea about what needs to be done for EGT tuning.

We would need to adjust changes after new DCS version will release, and so you would be able to try it as well. We will make announcement when changes will hit openbeta, and we think we will do same format and listen what you will say, like we did here in this thread.

Team developed solution which will include tune regarding torque and temperature. As soon as programmers will implement it it will go for patch.

Also task was created for fixing gauge green zone.

The fix implementation taking more time that we would want, but Huey engine needs some considerable changes for this new solution to be in place. We jumped on our engine programmers with this while they were in the middle of F/A-18C project, so now they are split between two tasks and not going really fast. We hope, that when F-18C will go early access, patch for Huey engine will also be close to completion.

AFAIK, once BST correct EGT and Torque, we should be flying to max torque 50 psi (gearbox limitation) upto approx 4000 ft and to 615°C EGT (625°C 30 min max) above that (engine limitation).

For now - EGT is king at all altitudes.

Ok Great guys thanks for the info. Yes I'm using the Hog system, I have some of those keys assigned to some item right now but I may just disconnect those switches and see if that solves the problem.

Ramsay - thanks for the info.

No just make sure they are neutral until needed I forgot the throttle switch that was the culprit but check the pinky toggle on the side of the left throttle lever I want to think it was the problem then if it wasn’t it must have been one of the thumb hats on the right throttle easiest way is go in to the tm software that shows what switch is active like the windows calibration app and make sure they are all off then go in to the huey that should take care of the problem if you wait a few seconds to make sure your not blowing the engine then try switching the switches you have setup and see what happens at first one at a time

BlacleyCole, Thanks for the tip. I went ahead and re-checked all the assignments through DCS and found some odd things, unassigned the switches and have done two hours worth of flying with no problems. Thanks a lot for the help everybody.

  • 4 weeks later...

Yes, It's still happening. I had to go out of town for work for a couple of weeks but am now back at it. So yea it is still happening. I have no buttons assigned and can be traveling along normal, in formation with my flight lead (AI) and all of the sudden boom engine blows up and down I go. This is so sad at this point because I really do enjoy this machine.... Any recommendations on a different helicopter? Any suggestions on how to fix this one?

You have to carefully Watch you EGT and constantly keep It on the Green zone. It's quite difficult since you have to be very gentle with the collective (and almost impossibile If you try to sling load) but this is how the EGT limit is now implemented. Maybe a bit restrictive, I don't know if ED plans to modify It in the future, but Just for flying you can manage It even how It is now.

Yes if you read above It seems ED / belsimtek plans to modify EGT limit behaviour.

Well I hope they do modify it because I am keeping everything in the green and good status the entire time, it just blows up. I'm stuck on the 3rd or 4th mission in my campaign and I cant do it because the of this problem. in my fact my flight lead leaves me in the dust because he seems to have a super Huey I guess. That's what bothers me the most is that I can't even keep up with the AI because their machines fly faster and stronger than mine, it just doesn't make sense to me.

ignore the AI... they do have super huey's compared to yours. because they use a simpler flight model.

never try to climb with an ai huey. you will lose and blow your engine.

just keep up with them horizontally. don't worry if they get above or below you.
