    • East Afghanistan (Nuristan, Kunar, Nangarhar, Khowst) and Pakistan border
    • Southeast Afghanistan around Kabul (Kabul, Wardak, Paktia to Paktika)
    • South Afghanistan (Helmand, Uruzgan, Kandarhar, Zabul)
    • The northern regions (Kunduz, Baglan, Samangan,Balkh)
    • West Afghanistan (Herat, Farah and Nimrus) and east of Iran

I vote for East Afghanistan with the high mountains of the Hundukusch and the famous Tora Borah area and Bagram air base of course. But I would also love to like the Kunduz area in northern Afghanistan including Mazar e Sharif or southern Afghanistan with its infamous Helmand and Kandahar provinces and the big Kandahar air base. I'm not really interested in western Afghanistan though.

This exactly!

If the map catches the South West and part of Balochistan and Iran, then campaigns can transition back & forth between the two maps.

Balochistan is Sunni, Iran Shia …

Baloch ethnic group spans all three countries and are active sectarian insurgents.

Cheers.

Man, you have no idea, haven't you?

May want to watch "Lone Survivor" to get an idea of East Afghanistan, with its large wooded mountain ridges, the snow capped peaks and lush valleys.

North is something between prairie/savanna and steppe. The Hindukush with high(!) mountains and even Helmand with the Green Zone the area around the river Helmand where they farm citrus fruits, crop, vegetables and poppies en masse. Contrasted indeed, by the Dasht-e-margo, but then Kandahar province has more resemblence with southern europe inland.

Especially Afghanistan concentrates quite contrasting and different areas in one place, only there is no ocean, well, the indian ocean is close enough for carrier Ops, so we can hope they add it, without detailing India and Pakistan.

Ya know the many members of the military have been advocating for years that we need to have wars in countries with Sandy Beaches, Rum and Mai Tai's and bikini clad ladies on the beach...But those people don't want to have a war they wanna have a party...

If there was Rum and Mai Tai's in the Middle east there would be no war.

LAWL...No apology necessary. Perhaps all the world needs is a little rum to settle its differences.

I spent a great deal of my adult life deployed to that part of the world...The only real Gem was when we deployed to Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean. That being said...there ARE good people there and there are some AMAZING places to visit.

i'd definitely like an improved alcohol simulation in DCS.

also if we ever get a vietnam map, and an F-4, we'll need an LSD mode.

Climb to 20k ft and deactivate the oxygen, ok, it is quicker than alcohol, but the effect is pretty close. ;)

Bagram Airbase is just north of Kabul, so each of those is a given. Russians and US both used/improved it. Kabul international (KAIA) is a combined civilian military strip currently. An-124's would come into land. They are BIG. We would drive right under the landing path on our way out the gate.

Bamiyan province would be nice for site seeing. Beautiful country. I lived in Afghanistan for 2 years, there is much more than sand and desert. The valleys irrigated with snowmelt can get very green. Sometimes I felt like I could have been in the Rockies. Same pine tree smell.

Major areas of action in the Soviet and ISAF era centered around the eastern part of the country and the Paki border. The North and West were relatively mellow except for terrorist type attacks. Sharif has the major airbase in the north though.

The place I was at for my first year had an old MiG boneyard with -17's, and maybe -19's.

Of course more borders and airbases opens up possibilities for hypothetical and counterfactual scenarios. Alternate history is always fun.

There is an amazing armor tank boneyard at the Kabul Military Training center right on the edge of the city. About 30 years worth of Soviet occupations and civil war that has not been scrapped yet. I'll see if I can find some old pictures. It's definitely visible from the air.

Oh, and a previous poster mentioned there are no major cities larger than a million. This person has never been to Kabul. There is no way to take an accurate census in Afghanistan. People have poured into the relatively safe area of Kabul from all over the country. It is really overcrowded and very polluted. About 3 mil+ when I was there. Wiki has current estimate of 4.6 million. Lots of slums with very little clean water.

I had the opportunity to take a flight over the Hindu Kush from Sharif to Bagram. Absolutely breathtaking. 20,000 foot snowcaps out to the horizon for as far as the eye could see. I got a few pics out the window. Doesn't compare to reality.

Among the DCS fan base, there's no shortage of silly statements. We've spent 20 years with the same old Crimea/Caucasus map - a region of the world where the prospect of U.S./Western intervention is virtually nil. Now we've got some maps where there's a higher probability of U.S./Western intervention or currently such intervention going on and people find a reason to whine.

It comes as no surprise. LOL

With the size of the standard DCS detailed map area, I imagine the map would have to be heavily focused to the south and include parts of Pakistan in order to have the Arabian Sea/Gulf of Oman on the map which is a must for US Navy Tomcat and Hornet missions.

I would love to see a military cargo aircraft developed for DCS. Such as the Hercules, the Spartan or the like. Sure not really made for dogfighting but would be awesome to deliver troops, military cargo and equipment, drop paratroopers, land in high threat airports, do escort flights being protected by fellow fighters and much, much more.

Then why do you post in the Afghanistan map thread?! It is already confirmed and worked on, anyway.

You may want to post this in the wishlist section or the "Next aircraft" thread. This is the DLC maps section and this thread specifically about the upcoming Afghanistan map. :smilewink:

After reading Tony Holmes' F-14 Tomcat Units of Operation Enduring Freedom, an Afghanistan map is a must. Those Tomcat crew flew some epic missions!
