My P-47D Freezes on Start Up

Hello,

I hope someone can shed some light on this. I have recently, after much frustration, gotten my v 2.5.6 installed and have successfully downloaded and installed my P-47D30. However when I tried to test the install I ran into a problem. I tried a Free Flight with the module's default scenery, which is the Caucaus. The loading took a long time, which I attributed to the fact that this was the first time this action was being done and the computer was therefore a bit slow. However, when the loading finally stopped and the start screen appeared and I used the Pause/Break key to start, when the plane appeared the screen promptly froze, stuttered a few times, and then locked up solid. I couldn't get any response to any of my key commands, including when I tried to exit back to the main page. I finally had to shut down the computer using the power button on the tower to get it to turn off. I rebooted and tried a similar mission using the default TP-51D, which wasn't much better. The screen didn't get totally locked up but there was a lot of stuttering and when I moved my joystick, instead of smooth movements, there was a lot of jerking around. So apparently the problem doesn't lie with the newly installed P-47D. I have since disabled the module for the default Russian jet and the jsAvionic , the latter of which I had never purchased or installed and which seemed to have shown up only after all of my earlier key punching. Any light that anyone can shed on this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I saw your other thread. sorry it's been such a pain.

Edit your post above and attach a copy of your

C:\Users\<yourname>\Saved Games\DCS World\Logs\dcs.log

after a crash. The log won't help much to solve bad performance. Only after the crash.

For that, you can attach a picture of your options screen on the system tab. (click the gear icon at the top of the 1st in game screen)

Since we don't know anything about your pc a dxdiag file will also help. You can follow this link to see how to do it.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4028644/windows-open-and-run-dxdiagexe

While you wait for replies, in the Windows start menu, an Eagle Dynamics section was created. There you will find a "repair DCS World" program. Run it to make sure your stop and start install didn't create an issue.

Hi Paganus,

Here is some more information for you. First of all I tried the DCS Repair and got a message saying it had successfully completed its task. Unfortunately it didn't do any good. I tried the P-47 and the P-51D (which I was able to successfully install last night along with my Spit IX) in 2.5.6 as a Free Flight. I don't know if this means anything but the loading time to get to the mission screen took forever, probably 5-6 minutes. Then when I got there and pressed the Pause/Break key the selected aircraft appeared after a minute or two of frozen screen but in the case of the P-47D it showed up with its prop stopped and after over 5 minutes it had still not moved in spite of repeated commands from the keyboard and inputs from my joystick and the mouse arrow had disappeared to be replaced by an +. I tried to Exit back to the mission page but repeated presses of the Esc key failed to bring up the options box for several minutes, after which it took several more minutes after clicking Exit for the game to respond. After getting back there I selected the P-51D to see if this was aircraft specific. Again long loading times and when I clicked Pause/Break and Fly initially for a second or two the airplane moved but then started intermitantly stuttering and finally locked up again and I had the same problem exiting. I then closed out of 2.5.6 (which works fine as long as you don't try to load any airplanes and fly them) after the usual lagging response time and decided to try a second test with my OpenAlpha v2.1 version, where I seemed to remember my P-51D and Spitfire working normally, to see if the problem was with 2.5.6 or something else. The load times seemed a bit less but still rather long but when I got to the Mission page I tried Free Flights for both the P-51D with the Nevada Test Range scenery and the Spitfire IX with the Normandy scenery. The P-51D was very sensitive around all three flight axis but I think I could have damped that out with practice and adjustments in the Controls section, but did not appear to have too much stuttering. On the other hand, the Spitfire jerked all over the place when it would move at all, and there were times when it would lock up and not respond to any control inputs for several seconds at a time and then move wildly in the direction of input to the point where control was lost and I crashed. I don't remember this happening when last I used this platform. By the way I associate stuttering with frame rates but I don't know if tvhat is what is happening here, and that wouldn't explain the lock ups. As a further test I booted up and tried my FSX flight simulator and that works normally in every sense with several different aircraft.

Below is my v 2.5.6 dcs.log from today's effort. It will probably have data from both planes I guess.

I'm sorry to say your rig is under powered for DCS currently.

The CPU @ 3.8GHz is ok.

8GB of RAM is the bare minimum. Small simple missions only, for sure.

The R7 200 GPU is below minimum spec. The 2GB of VRAM it has is a big time bottleneck.

I suspect you have a spinner hard drive instead of a SSD which doesn't help. Thus the long load times.

You will need to run low graphics settings.

A fixed page file might help. This thread explains doing it.

I wish I had better news for you. Based on the age of the rig and the number of things that need improving, I wouldn't upgrade the current machine. Time for a new one.

Below is my v 2.5.6 dcs.log from today's effort. It will probably have data from both planes I guess.

I would agree with paganus that your system is below spec for DCS, and the highlighted exerts from your log show that your not even logged into DCS so I don't know how your playing it at all (Couldn't Resolve Host name).

You still have net issues with Host name resolution to IP address.

Thanks Peganus and Ian,

I tried the pagefile thing and that didn't work. I'm surprised when you say the computer is below spec. I specifically purchased this Win 10 machine to operate the later versions of DCS when my older Win 7 desktop couldn't handle anything over the original DCS World release. I thought I remembered the P-51D and Spit IX working in the OpenAlpha v 2.1 version when I installed them but that was a few years ago now and maybe I'm not remembering correctly. The tech at Best Buy where I purchased the Cyberpower Win 10 machine told me when I asked him if it would run the later DCS programs he said it would. But even if so it certainly doesn't appear to be doing the job now. By the way, I am getting that not resolving host name on both v 2.1 and v 2.5.6. You say that is not being logged into DCS but I was on line each time I tried to play and logged into 2.5.6 because I remember having to click the authorize button for my saved password. If this was not recognized I wouldn't have been taken to the Mission Set Up page, but I was and I saw my handle along the upper task bar showing I was logged in. I don't know what else I can do to get the host name recognized.

I'm not sure aboout the new machine option. I put a lot of money into purchasing this one specifically for DCS World and I need to keep the Win 7 desktop at least for now as I have a lot of addons there that I would have trouble porting over. So now I have two machines on my desk. Even if I could afford a third one what would I do with the Cyberpower Win 10 machine I have now? I'd like to think first about making things work on the Cyberpower. How about starting by adding RAM? Surely this is possible for a machine only a couple of years old. How about getting a more powerful processor and/or graphics card? I would be willing to pay a reasonable amount to add whatever I needed to get this to work as I hate to throw out something that is actually working (as in I can internet connect, do emails, write docs, etc.) Besides getting a new machine have you any ideas how I should proceed if I want to try to do an upgrade?

One final thing. Four years ago at the Flying Legends airshow at Duxford I purchased the P-40 that was in pre release and I have yet to see anything about it, although at the next year's show they were demonstrating a working pre production version of it. I have heard a rumor that this is now not going to be available. True? If so what about all of us who paid good money on good faith for a product that does not now exist?

Thanks guys. I appreciate your expertise and time in going through all of my frustrations. I will gladly accept any help and any suggestions you can make.

Tech guys will say anything to sell stuff, even when they have no clue about very niche software products like this sim, nor do they have a crystal ball to say how hardware requirements will change for the later versions of the game and thus shouldn't be making bold claims.

Your machine was good enough for 2.1, but with 2.5 a heavy revision of graphics engine of the game happened, which brought more eyecandy, but at a serious cost of minimum hardware requirements. If I were you I would first investigate the option of replacing the graphics card alone, even for some second-hand purchase, because I don't think you will be able to play at all with current one, being below required specification. That could be the most affordable solution for now.

As for the P-40, nothing can be done I'm afraid. The company went belly up (it was a 3rd party sub-contractor, not the Eagle Dynamics itself), the project is gone. Inherent risk of any pre-purchases, caveat emptor. You're in a good company of many folks here who ended up in the same situation.

Navy,

I was watching this unfold, and to echo the others the first thing that caught my eye was the System RAM: 8189 value.

DCS just will not run reliably, especially newer maps like "The Channel" with only that much RAM. You might be able to pull off a simple mission with a Caucasus map mission, but I don't think there are any for the 47.

Your Video card isn't even up to snuff. This is disheartening for sure to hear, but whomever tried to build this for you, should have consulted DCS forums or recommended builds before even helping you out. Of course if you purchased it two years ago, while the machine would have run DCS, it still wasn't quite up to snuff to really run it for all scenarios.

It's really too old to update properly, but if I had no choice...

RAM - a match pair of 8GB DD3 1333 sticks - As far as I know, that's the best/maximum that mainboard can handle. What you have now, I would bet your last dollar on, is a pair of 4GB. Since the mainboard only has 2 slots, you need 2, 8's just to get to 16GB.

Video - The best 8GB VRAM card you can afford, that will fit on that mainboard.

SSD - SATA type - without a solid state drive load times will never improve. Go with at least a 480GB. A full DCS install with all maps is over 200GB with more on the way. It would be nice to get Windows running on it, but that's another story.

CPU - I'll leave that to someone better informed. According to the mainboard maker it supports, 45nm AMD AM3 Phenom II/ Athlon II processors.

The RAM and CPU are both old tech at this point, and might be purchased used, if you dare.

New hardware often requires a new power supply if the current one isn't high enough output, or has aged badly.

Good luck!

Thanks Gerb and Ian. I've already printed out your posts (I'll add this one) and have gone to Best Buy and made an appointment (Thursday) to have an update done with all of your suggestions. Strangely enough they said that they can sell a video card to me but not install it! Imagine that. Last option if all else fails I took a quick look at a new rig with the recommended specs and that would run $800-$1000. Ouch. Well let's hope it doesn't come to that. I'll keep you posted.

Hi guys,

Here's an update. I decided on trying to upgrade my current machine so I went to Best Buy and got a matched pair of 8 GB RAM sticks and an 8 GB VRAM video card and left the desktop there for the install. I got a call later that same night saying one of the techs had started to look at the machine and said that since it was four years old none of the new components would work with it. Something to do with the motherboard. He said a bunch of other technical stuff, which I didn't understand, but basically it comes down to my machine being incapable of being upgraded. There are no parts available that will work with it due to the age and whatever is going on with the motherboard. So now, if I want to make 2.5.6 and the modules I have purchased work in it I am now going to have to buy a third computer, and try to port over all my programs from the other two. I don't have a ton of money to invest in this, so I was wondering if you could suggest a machine that would do all I need it to do without breaking the bank, hopefully something not over about $700. And what specs would you suggest from your own experience? Any suggestions? Also I am wondering if I get a new machine will I be able to play all of my older games. I have many, such as CFS3, Il-46, B-17 The Mighty Eighth, FS9, and shooters like Medal of Honor Pacific Theater, and Brothers in Arms. I know that usually older games will run in newer machines and not vice versa, but I have found some exceptions such as CFS2 not working on my Win 7 desktop but will still play on my old laptop which is running XP. If the answer is no I may have to keep the older machine just to play the older games. So that's where things stand right now. I look forward to hearing any input

My 2¢

1) Stop going to Best Buy, they are not doing well by you.

2) Find a reputable computer dealer, word of mouth works well.

3) Don't buy a new computer, there is no need. Upgrade your existing computer.

You will not find a $700 computer that will run DCS. TWICE that much will give you a computer that will run DCS for the next few years and THREE times that budget will give you a computer system that will run DCS for several years.

For your $700 budget you should be able to get a new motherboard, CPU and RAM.

RAM

For DCS get 32GB of RAM, fastest that the motherboard will support.

CPU

DCS and most flight simulators are not like the mass FPS that the guys at Best Buy are familiar with. They will talk about bench marks and FPS on AAA titles that use the Unreal game Engine that use multiple cores. DCS needs the fastest single core clock speed you can afford which is why it typically runs better on an Intel processor these days. Look for the fastest clock speed and I recommend you pay a bit extra and get a K version that you will not need to overclock yourself.

Say a Core i5-10600k or a i5-10600KF which should be a bit cheaper since it does not have onboard graphics which you will not need

4) wait for the new RTX-30XX series cards to be released before upgrading it.

Regarding the KF series Intel CPUs and the integrated GPU, if the user has any intentions of doing any video editing or streaming/recording DCS on this computer I suggest staying away from the KF processors (keep the integrated GPU on CPU).

Video editing tools like Adobe Premiere can use the iGPU via Inel QuickSync to speed up rendering/transcoding and also tools like OBS studio allow you to use the iGPU to capture/stream/record the game play while not affecting your game's frame rate by taking processing power away from the discrete NVIDIA/AMD GPU..

Once you have a decent computer to play DCS you might be surprised how you want to record your flights for playback later. DCS can be quite cinematic - I never thought I'd want to do it but here we are with a bunch of homemade 4K DCS video on my PLEX server. For the sake of $20-$30 difference between K and KF just get the K IMO.

Thanks for the input Rob. I'll shop around and see if I can make the old Win 10 computer work with the specs you have mentioned.

Art, the original post was placed under the P-47D heading (I clicked backward and verified this) and also page one. For some reason page two came up in the FW-190 sub heading.

Hi Guys,

Here's the latest for all of you who have tried to help me and given me advice. I found a third party (not associated with a big store chain) who runs his own business who, after a phone conversation detailing my machine and my needs, agreed to look into it. I took the machine in to him today and after looking at it he said that it could in fact be upgraded. However, by the time he had installed all of the relevant components, including a power source and motherboard, it would be within about $100 of a new machine. He also scratch builds computers and actually had one he had just finished for about $1100 that has what I need and a bit more. This will give me 32 gigs of RAM, the latest video/graphics card, an upgraded CPU and new motherboard. He has assured me this will enable DCS World 2.5.6 to work (he checked the specs for it on line while I waited) along with all of my modules, and will test everything out first before I pick it up, probably on Friday. I hope this is the end of my odyssey and will let everyone know how this works out. Thanks to all for your help, patience, and advice.
