So, this years Star wars movie. Spoilers are a thing in here.

went to see Episode 8 yesterday. I have mixed feelings about it.

It could have cemented the franchise on this side of the millennium with a great memorable movie. So much potential there with a few changes.

I'll begin by saying: Disney please stop pretending this is game of thrones in space! :D

Because the part of Rey's/Luke's story arch was absolutely brilliant, the other arch was undermined by secondary characters that contributed little to the richness of the story. The sudden deaths managed not to engage the audience because we never had time to really know them (hence my reference to game of thrones). nor did their sacrifice advance to anyone's collective good in that movie.

Pros

YODAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!

Chewie roasts a porg and slaps another one. HAHAHAHAHAH I was about to mention Porg BBQ whenever anyone wold mention this movie. It's like they read my mind.

Rey continues to be the best developing and engaging character by FAR.

Kylo was less of a problem Justin Bieber in space this time around.

Luke was a BOSS OMG. His journey in the saga ended with the perfect circle closure.

The fight scene with Rey and Kylo was AWSOME. which leads me to:

Cons:

Snoke was so easily snuffed out of the movie before his motivations were known or who he was. Really Disney? :(

Theres is doubt that Rey should ever team up with Kylo on any part of the movie after Solo's brutal death in episode VII. Rey mentions this at least twice in the movie and I think the tease of a possible redemption was not going to fly. It was kinda of a thorn on my side but thankfully his ultimate motivations were to seize power only.

Kylo simply tells Rey her parets died in a dicth somehere and that matter was closed just like that. What?

What is general Holdo Doing there? her hesitation caused more deaths than the villains own actions and they owe her ALOT for the favor. It should have been Princess Leia to drive that spectacular kamikaze run and end her participation in the saga without plot holes in episode 9.

Finn is a clown he simply was not in tune with the dark theme of the movie. Rose is a clickbait for the asian cinema market, Disney gave nothing to her role but a superficial one and I was not sorry when she died. Barely knew her (sorry but its how I see it).

The whole casino planet arch was messy. If DJ had already a key to the prisons doors and a ship to escape why would he need to wait for Finn and Rose? The later two should have hired him on a criminal derelict enviroment. It would have given their participation a more meaningful one.

Is Phasma dead already? wow what a weak role. She lasted 2 minutes on screen (if that much) and thats it. Only Hux and Kylo are left and hux is annoying as hell.

They should have filmed Ford and fisher's episode 7 and 8 scenes at the same time in 2015 so that ford gets his wish to die, but alongside Fisher in that kamikaze run before snokes ship could pick the survivors one by one like it did.

Speaking of her. She can fly in space on her own??? She went to heaven but that scene has had me cringe badly... She should have replaced Holdo's role.

Too many jokes. Empire strikes back was dark enough with the proper amount of comical relief.

To me, it was a bad version of Empire Strikes Back, non of the new characters mattered and seem force in. I spend most of the movie think: "WTF, really?" repeatedly. I can't wait for Honest trailers or HSIHE to make a video about this movie. It should be funny.

- What was the point of ray going to get trained by Luke, she got no training

- Was was the point of the Jedi text? no purpose (I did see them in the Millennium Falcon).

- Bomber scene, ridiculous.

- Leia was dead, cool then she come in flying? Why?

- Snoke; How did he manage to become "Supreme Leader"? he got kill by an emo douche that got bested by an untrained force sensitive person (which a how different discussion)

- Benicio del Toro that whole sequence could have been removed, that was a force Lando Calrissina.

- The guys that tasted the ground to let us know it was not snow...who the hell tastes the ground?

- The chase, the freaking space ship chase...Are you serious?!

Many more things that I was just WTF, really?

No big deal, I’ ll still see it and decide for myself as Usual as I never like movies the critics like. And I always like the movies critics hate. Go figure.

They don't know how to make movies anymore but the people who watch them are to blame also, critics are just an extension of that idiocy. I came into the theater thinking it was the best sw movie, but contrary to the reviews I think rogue one was the best on this side of the century.

Hated it. The two best characters in the movie die in the first 10 minutes, the ending is unsatisfying, the underlying tension is stupid and lazily written, the casino section was one hundred percent pointless, the pacing drags badly and the space battles are drastically inferior to those in Rogue One. Also, IT'S FREAKING DEEP SPACE, TURBO LASER BLASTS DO NOT ARC.

People wanted something to remind them of the good old days of Star Wars, so The Force Awakens was specifically tailored towards that audience. It was received as being an amazing movie, then all of sudden it began catching hate. Everyone jumped on the "its a rip off of Star Wars" bandwagon. Now that we have a Star Wars movie that tried to be somewhat unique (yes I know the similarities) people are moaning about it. Its almost if people wanted an Empire clone....so they could rave about it then hate on it.

Was it perfect? Oh no way. The whole casino thing was a waste of time and did mess up the pacing a little bit. Captain Phasma was a joke. All the hype about her for the last 3 years and she shows for what 10 minutes, and dies kinda of easily. As we can see from comments above, some people will treat this movie as the spawn of satan. To that I say sorry the nostalgia and greatness of the OT will never leave. People will hate it and pick out reasons why its horrible, because the originals were perfect! Right? Right. This is the new trilogy, this is the way things will be, executives at Disney really do not care what we say they get their money. Its just business.

The best things about this movie I thought was the characters. Kylo Ren & Rey were absolutely wonderful. Poe's transition throughout the movie was good too. I don't know how to feel about Luke. It was nice to go back to a Star Wars movie with decent characters. Far better than Rogue One, which character wise was below Phantom Menace. Rogue One had some awesome action and it was great for just that, the characters were an absolute joke and quite pathetic how they were handled.

It was entertaining, I would definitely recommend everyone see. I can't wait to see it again. People will love it, people will hate. It will be this way for the next decade of Star Wars. Go see it and make your own opinions about it.

I also had mixed feelings about this movie after I saw it. I really want to like it, but there was so much I felt was quite cringe-worthy.

I'll admit I even felt like walking out during the first half.

The movie feels more like a sketch comedy parody of Star Wars, rather than a Star Wars movie.

The opening scene where where General Hux is being toyed with by Poe is funny, but it completely undermines his character and the danger that the First Order poses. Compare Hux and the First Order to Grand Moff Tarkin and the Empire.

I would like the First Order to have been more menacing than the Empire. Instead they look like Saturday morning cartoon villains.

Then there's the scene with the attack on the dreadnought. Incredibly slow moving bombers (why sooo slow?) advance on a ship to drop bombs on it? How without gravity??? Yes this is fantasy... fantasy physics. Sure, I'll go with it. Makes sense.

BB8 "fixing" the X-Wing was a little too ridiculous. But it's funny. It's funny, right? Yeah, pretty sure that part was funny. Cringe is a type of humour after all.

The whole Canto Bight escapade what literally useless. They achieved nothing and put the whole resistance in jeopardy. Ok, maybe it's supposed to be a lesson about things not always going the way you expect? Yeah, that must be it. Subverting expectations... Well done Rian Johnson!

Even then, the whole Canto Bight sequence looks completely out of place aesthetically. Earth fashion and architecture with aliens... Worse than in the prequels. But I'm sure I'll get over this, like I got over the prequels.

Mark Hamill did a great job as Luke, even though the character is questionable. Chucking the Lightsabre was kind of funny, but then it only gets worse.

Luke is tired of the force and being a Jedi because Kylo Ren turned to the dark side? And then it turns out he wanted to kill Kylo because he feared the dark potential in him?

Why??? Why would Luke Skywalker be so afraid of the dark side? He turned his own father FROM the dark side.

So he risks trying to kill (Ben Solo) Kylo and ultimately pushes him all the way to the dark... good move Luke.

“A Jedi uses the Force for knowledge and defense, never for attack.” - Yoda

It doesn't make sense for Luke to be so afraid. Who was it again that said this?:

“Fear is the path to the dark side…fear leads to anger…anger leads to hate…hate leads to suffering.”

So Luke is a really terrible Jedi it turns out. And this is the guy that then gives Rey her "training", that consists of teaching her how to meditate while tickling her with a blade of grass (bwhahaha, hilarious!). At least Luke has a good sense of humour, even if he's a terrible Jedi.

Speaking of Rey, she's a character I got to like in the force awakens. The were some big mysteries about who her parents were and how she is such a natural force user. These things are a big deal - she can use Jedi mind tricks and is a natural with a light sabre. There must be something to this... It takes much training to be a Jedi, so she must be very special to be able to do these things straight away, right?

Nope. Her parents were nobodies and her powers will never be explained. OK...

Supreme Leader Snoke, the mysterious leader behind the First Order actually shaped up to be a compelling villain. The made really good use of him and explained who he is, where he came from and the characters were also interested in this, right?

Nope.

Instead they just kill him off like he was no-one, pretend it's not a mystery who he was and leave it at that.

Then Rey and Kylo proceed to team up and Kill his guards (who could be the important Knights of Ren mentioned in episode 7, but that doesn't matter, because they're not important now). This is actually quite awesome, and to top it off Kylo then asks Rey to join him. This movie is really subverting Star wars, so its going to be really awesome and unexpected if Rey actually does join Kylo, right?

Nope.

She does the normal Jedi thing, ignores the emotional connection that has been established through their force meetings, and turns him down.

The medical frigate runs out of fuel, slows down and drops away. More fantasy physics... I guess that's ok. I'll learn to love than I'm sure.

The attack on the cannon looked beautiful. A heroic attempt to save the resistance. Ooooh, but they're not going to make it... unless this one character who did absolutely nothing useful so far sacrifices himself for the good of the team. And he will! Wait, no he doesn't - The other useless character stops him and puts the whole team in even more danger.

Don't get me wrong, I really like Finn's character, but given that they had already written him so poorly, him making his sacrifice would have been a really fitting end for him, right?

Nope.

Luke does actually turn out to be pretty bad ass after all. The force projection thing is really cool and he tricks Kylo into fighting him and lets the 10 people left in the resistance escape. Oh yeah, Luke's back baby! Awesome!!! Right? ... right?

Nope.

Luke's dead.

Apparently his stunt sucked all the energy out of this ancient Jedi in his mid-fifties.

But I'm sure I'll learn to like this part too. After all, it's Star Wars.

The truth is, the more I think about this movie, the less I like it. And I really, really, really WANT to like it.

For us that hate it, what would change? I keep going through so many different scenarios, stories that I think would have been more entertaining.

My versions

- Start on the island, Ray tell Luke what has been happening ask how could he not know, he explains the whole disconnected from the force and why.

- We have flash back, shows what happened to the new Jedi academy, we see several older Jedi capturing the padawans, destroying the temple, who are they, was that Snoke?

- We cut to see Kylo fighting Snoke guard, looking more aggressive, stronger. We see Snoke, he praises him for being more powerful, Kylo gets a little cocky and Snoke smacks him down, reminds him the Skywalkers still lives and both must die for him to complete his training. Kylo ask about Ray, Snoke tells him they will turn her.

- We see the "rebels" having some victories against the First order, after all, they just destroyed their main base. They think the first order is on the run.

- Back to Luke/Ray, show some training, simple stuff, quick montage. Introduce the concept of Gray Jedi (like they did on The Last Jedi) Light need the Dark and vice versa. Instead of the Jedi text, use the Holocrons and have both Sith and Jedi ones. Show Luke using both the Dark and The light. Ray remind him they must go to the aid of the rebels to root out the First order Luke finally agrees (after all, his best friend died and his sister needs him).

- On they way to the "rebels" Ray starts having the connection to Kylo, They are having that interaction, here they reveal how Kylo did not fully turn to the dark, but after the older Jedi capture the padawans they all where beat up and abuse. Reveal Snoke was one of the older Jedi, now Sith. How he disregarded the rule of two and restarted the Sith order. How Kylo to survive, had to fight. They show that Snoke guard are actually the new Sith.

- Back to the "rebels", Ray/Luke is back with them, Fin is recovering. They think they learn the location of Snoke and want to end it. They Set up for the attack. Luke confronts Ray about what is going on with Kylo, she thinks she can turn him back.

- The "rebels" go to kill Snoke, they commit all their sources, bam! is a trap! The sith/ First order attack in force, everyone is scrambling, many die, some escape. "Rebels" are found again, what is going? on how do they know where we are? Kylo/Snoke make Ray think is her, that as long as she is with the rebels she puts them in danger. She thinks she can turn Kylo and maybe they both can kill Snoke.

-So Ray leave the rebels, thinking this will protect them, she meets Kylo, they make plan to kill Snoke, she is not sure, she does not trust Kylo but sees no other option.

- We see more "rebels" fall, more people joining the First Order/Sith. Luke is trying to Help, to many of them (think of the Dark Vader scene form Rouge One but with Luke) This is how he did not know Ray left, they are all divided. We see Leia die on these attacks, Luke slowly demoralize again, fail to save The academy, his best friend his sister. Learns about Ray and he goes to try to find her.

- Ray/Kylo take Snoke, but Kylo turns on Ray. ( we all saw that coming) Snoke reveals it was all a ploy. Despite this, Ray wins over Kylo (bad ass Fight) She goes for Snoke, but he easily best her. Tells her she must take Kylo place. Luke show up, (more bad ass Fight scene) This whole time Snoke is tricking Ray. Showing her images. Luke is winning the fight but Ray thinks Snoke is Luke and Luke is Snoke. So she attack Luke.

- We still seeing rebels escaping, hope is fleeting. They almost had victory, now they are barely alive.

- Last Scene, Snoke reveals to Ray what she had done, Luke is hurt, Kylo is out (not dead yet). She does not know what to do. She still believe she is the reason the Rebels are almost dead. She knows she is guilty for almost killing Kylo and Luke. Snoke uses this and we have Ray join him now. What!?

- Fin and Poe are helping, are looking for Luke and Ray. Find Luke and Kylo. We can't find Ray, what happened?

This open the next movie for all kinds of possibilities. Is Kylo/ Luke going to make it? Will Kylo go back to the dark/light? Will Ray turn sith? How will the "rebels" come back for this?

What is you guys version? How terrible was mine?

Just a quick thought from my pea-sized mind. When Kylo & Rey finished fighting Snoke's Guards and Kylo says something along the lines "forget the jedi, sith, rebellion & empire, lets start over and make our own path" I really thought it was going to happen. Atleast in my head I was like "wow this is going to get great". Then Kylo got to angry and greedy and that was that. Sure would have been interesting too see

Luke milking that creature set the tone for the rest of the movie.

I thought that was a great little scene.

It's the first time he's getting serious screen time, he's a legend the universe, and Rey (+audience) is expecting to find some revered and noble Jedi Master.

Instead she (and the audience) find a sad old man who is doing nothing but surviving and brooding.

Luke was also a farmboy too, so it's not out of character either :)

On the whole though, after a second viewing, I don't think the film is good.

Too much really stupid stuff (flying Leia, slow bombers, Holdo not saying the plan for no reason etc...) weaved in with a bit of a rubbish plot setup and too many shades of Empire.

The entire casino planet could have been cut and absolutely nothing would have been lost, all it needed was some quick 5 min hand waving to get Finn and Rose on Snoke's ship.

I'm also very surprised in the 10 months of editing since Carrie Fisher passed, they didn't cut the Luke dying scene out to allow Hamill to carry the torch a bit in Ep 9.
