Effect of SAS channels?

Quick question

What do stabilization channels actually do in the tomcat? (When autopilot is not being used) Is it just dampening, like in the F-5, or is it a bit more advanced? I know it's not full FBW, but I don't know what exactly it does to the jet.

Thanks

The AFCS or Automatic Flight Control System provides additional aircraft stability (SAS or Stability Augmentation System) via automatic control surface commands generated from AFCS sensors.

Yes, it's mostly dampening pilot inputs and automatic stabilization corrections.
