Just turn this project into a remake of "b17 the mighty 8th"

thats all the game really was. A small pack of freindly fighters and the b17 with some axis fighters.

you would make a friggen killing compared to your current business model of throwing ww2 planes into modern combat in nevada with jets.

Obvious troll is obvious. Getting to the point that it seems many new accounts lately are either trolls or people whose competency to fly aircraft is in question.

I loved the mighty eighth, best game IMHO, it captured an essence of being there, due in no small part to the immersive menu system, and personnel aspects of the game. Had lots of replay value given in part by the openness of what they allowed you to do.

I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the OP as a troll; the point has merit. If I remember correctly, B17 II Mighty Eighth only had like 4 flyable fighters, and 1 flyable bomber... and I don't recall any "AI-only" fighter or ground vehicles whatsoever.

The point being that if you add a properly modeled bomber, there are sufficient mission-design opportunities to make for an enjoyable campaign with very little else needed. ...well, ok, WWII appropriate map and proper flak would be good.

If DCS remains completely fighter-centric, though, the fight tends to be low altitude CAS-vs-low-fighter-sweep missions, and then the need for a litany of ground vehicles, AA guns, and map objects (WW2 appropriate tentage, log bunkers, artillery positions et al) becomes more of an issue.

I agree that the addition of a B17, B24, B29, or perhaps even B26 would have a disproportionate impact on the game compared to the addition of another fighter, CAS, or light attack aircraft.

...and no, I'm not excluding the German or British or Russian bombers out of any kind of nationalism; it's that the German bombers doctrinally performed more like light attack aircraft in most cases, which would be only marginal change from fighters operating in CAS role, and the Brit bombers were almost exclusively night bombers (or, again, light attack). While night bombers open up interesting options on their own, they would also require a lot more additions to DCS to make functional: night fighters, GCI guidance, searchlights, etc

I don't think the OP was being a troll he thinks the same way as a lot of us here

I don't think he was, either, but a lot of the initial responses were pretty quick to lean that way. Personally, I agree that a heavy daylight bomber, AI-only or flyable, would be the one single item that would bring the most benefit to DCS:WW2 right now. AI would be the most logical way to go for now, to get it in-game quickly.

I agree. A bomber would bring purpose to all fighters. P51 could perform escort and 109 and190 could start intercepting. They don't need much. Just FM from one of the current bomber/ transports for AI. Later it could be developed into a flyable module on its own but for now would be a game changer.

I didn't think he was a troll, I just thought the initial responses were funny and kind of turned it into a joke thread.

I never played that game but I like DCS's uniqueness in that it gives more sandbox freedom for mission creation, as opposed to classic style games.

The bombers are coming and will add a lot toward making the WWII aspect more legitimate.

B17 Mighty Eight allowed you to pick your own targets and plan your own flight path, time, munitions, etc... It is not limited to pre-designed missions as many "classic style games."

The immersion in B17 Mighty Eight was very impressive. I particularly enjoyed the "leveling up" of crewmen, which gave more incentive to keep them alive and made them seem like real people rather than generic AI.

Germany Map

I would be very happy to see a Germany map that allows for fatherland raids. Force the German fighters up to 30K+ with Mustangs flying escort (maybe some P-38s) and watch the whole game change. Intelligent AI bombers working raids on airfields, among other targets.

Campaign, made up of scheduled missions, could be a real kicker.

Right now, and even with a Normandy map, we have low level missions that are just, well...... low level............

P-47 with proper mods and paddle prop will balance it out. Id' love to see if the armor and general ruggedness make their way into the fabric of the sim.

The Mighty 8th is one of my all time favourite games. As a matter of fact I still play it now and then. (it is available on Steam for €7 - http://store.steampowered.com/app/328900/) Not so much for the flight simulation (which is rubbish with todays standards) as for the immersion level. You can actually feel the tension as you approach a target and the FLAK's open up. And the sense of accomplishment when you manage to bring a badly damaged bird back to England with all crew members alive is second to none.

They simply don't make games like that anymore.

I spent a lot of my childhood flying missions in real time in The Mighty Eighth. Such an awesome sim, still is. And being able to fly not just the B-17 but the little friends and axis fighters too.

For immersion and just plain good focus, B17II was the best. The game model, to my mind, was perfect. The ground was simple, but to the point. Flak was excellent. Formations were dynamic, precise, and hair-raising (remember fighting in the ball when a bomber suddenly crosses, closing up formation after another bomber went down). Planning and crew complexity were on target--no overkill. The "warping" and effect on the participants made long missions make sense. None of its concepts were inimical to DCS fidelity. Plug great planes, systems, and physics, you have DCS where everyone has a job to suite his taste, and a purpose.

That would be so awesome ... I also still fly occasionally this sim, and just keep hoping an up to date counterpart will see the sun one day.

Hopefully, this will be with DCS : B-17 one day ...

In 1998 I started with Janes WWII Fighters which covered the Western Front.

In 2001, I flew IL-2, then Pacific Fighters came out in 2004. IL-2: 1946 only covered said campaigns. IL-2: Cliffs of Dover in 2010 covered the Battle of Britain, now in 2014 IL-2 is back to the Russian front and doesn't seem to be looking elsewhere.

Microsoft's Combat Flight Simulator WWII Europe? 1998-2002

So it's been 13-15 years since any decent flight simulator has covered the European air theater and quite frankly, I'm getting really exhausted of the same theaters, aircraft, and battles for the past 15 years. We need a change. Protecting, attacking, or trying to keep a damaged B-17 in the air would be nothing short of epic. Most of the DCS community prefers modern combat over WWII, but I hope DCS: WWII Europe can get rolling at a decent pace.

Rant complete.
