GTX 1070 is awesome for DCS World 2.0

Recommended Posts

The thing with overclocking is to make sure the overclock itself is steady, otherwise performance will be worse then a lower stable clock. I have a i72600k at a stable 4.0ghz and when I was up at 4.3 performance in games was worse. Using cpuid you can see a stable clock because the ghz don't fluctuate, if it is fluctuating erratically then then the clock is not stable and you will have skipping frames and crash's. I didn't know the difference between unstable and stable until I did some testing recently when my performance was poor. Moral of the story higher clocks doesn't mean better performance, one can over stress the cpu.

4.8 I7, 1080, TMW&T, SSD, VKB MK.IV.

You most likely encountered the thermal limiter that cut back on the clock to get the chip cooler.

Have you watched/recorded temps while that happened ? Watercooling/HighEndAir or stock Intel cooler ?

To me this sounds like a pure cooling problem as 4.3GHz is PEANUTS for a nice 2600k.

At 5GHz you get close to thermal limiting above 90°C to near 100°C.

TIM old and dried out maybe ?? Had that on many "older" combos after a few years with old style TIM.

Not true, the core speed may drop due to either thermal throttling OR because the CPU is not being fully utilised. My i7 2700 at 4.9ghz will run slower on some of the cores in DCS (its a single core game after all)

Encode some video using handbrake, that will suss out a wobbley overclock.

That only happens if you have some kind of throttling allowed.

In HighPerformance power mode this does not happen, did not happen on my 2600k.

GTX 1070 works great, even better when DCS is more optimized I hope. I'm able to really crank up the eye candy and keep good frames. Quick couple of tests.

Well, I also have a 1070 GTX,

But... if some situations / terrains jump from 20 to 50 FPS all the time,

even with a 1180 we will going to have stutters..

Either 30 or if possible 60 stable, this guarantees fluidity. (for a 60 Hertz monitor).

Just upgraded to the 1070 (nvidia founters, 8gb). Very nice.

Several upgrades helped me:

1. moved to SSD 500GB Crucial

2. upgraded from 4GB to 20gb (DDR3 still)

my CPU is i7 2500 (3.40GHz) - Sandy Bridge 32nm

Keep your CPU for as long as you are happy with it; it is still good for DCS.

In my experience the main benefit of a CPU/MB upgrade is the use of an M2 ssd (compared to a sata ssd).

Hmmm some time ago I remember seeing somewhere tests

comparing M2 SSD vs. SATA SSD's and there was little or no difference in

loading times or responsiveness in games..

You wont see any advantage at all if you compare "M2" formfactor SSD's and 2.5" formfactor based SSD's, they are IDENTICAL.

What makes the difference is if they are driven by NVMe protocol.

Both FF's are available NVMe driven, tho the 2.5" NVMe are usually Enterprise segment drives and not marketed for con- or prosumers.

I could see a difference in loading DCS when I had it on my NVMe but it is marginal, so I moved it to a RAID-0 Sata based SSD array, fast enough with ~800-1000MB/sec read.

Even my single 850 pro never caused stutter or jitter, load times are mainly IPC limited I guess and not drive read speed once you have surpassed the CPU feeding speed needed. Just a HDD wont work, that should be clear by now.

edit: so watch out when you go buy a M2 SSD and dont know about. You thought you got one of those 3GB/sec drives but unknowingly bought a M2 SSD with Sata-III limits. Both look identical, both are M2 FF ! Mind that
