Lock on with guns selected

VC

Recommended Posts

Something's bothering me about fighting with guns in the MiG-29.

If I have a target locked and switch to guns, everything is fine.

If I lose the lock (as you would in a guns dogfight) the sight reverts to funnel and I can't lock again. I need to go to another mode e.g. vertical scan and lock, but this defaults back to missiles selected even if you're not carrying any. So then I have to re-select guns. This is multiple unnecessary clicks in a very tight time frame to get the lock back and therefore the correct aiming aid for the gun.

Am I missing something? Can I get the lock back from HUD in gun funnel mode?

From what mode are you starting?

If you are in vertical scan you can still lock targets even when the gun funnel is displayed. Same with helmet mode. The circle does not show, but by using the center of the screen you can still lock the target.

I tried that, I somehow "knew" it should work like you say but it didn't. Started from helmet and vertical scan, locked then lost lock, spammed lock button when the target was back right in the middle of the gun funnel, nothing. This was in a hectic dogfight though. I haven't yet tested in more stable conditions.

In vertical scan there is no need to spam the lock button, you can just hold it until the target is locked.

At least in the Flanker you can do vertical scan + helmet lock while still in the gun funnel, I would think that it works the same way in the MiG-29.

That's just the nature of the simplified module, normally you would be in EO mode and re-acquire the moment you could get the lock back; but none of that is modeled in-game. I just learn to use the gun funnel, it's accurate enough.

Yes, OK this does work but since you can't see the scan area sometimes it feels like it doesn't because you're just outside it. Good to know.

In any case I feel with snapshots it's awkward getting lock anyway, so I ended up putting the fixed sight on as the funnel doesn't have a proper crosshair.

Hold the button and do 180 or 360 degree roll. You won’t have to worry about scan area then. Just roll the plane and it’s locked when HUD changes to STT

Quite creative I must say :) but not always possible esp. when running for angles.

Indeed creative, and worth trying if you have time when setting up a tracking shot. I imagine even wiggling side to side slightly will do it with vertical scan.

But like I said if it's really hectic, if I'm going for a 90 degree target aspect short range snapshot, I've decided I prefer the fixed gunsight.

OK, but does it lock instantly or you need to be lucky? Afaik the radar antenna position is at least partially simulated.

Nope that’s how it works.

It shouldn't be nothing like that in the real Mig-29.

Reason, your gun is selected by physically flipping a trigger UP in your stick.

As long the weapon release trigger is flipped up, you are locked to cannon.

So why would Soviet designers make it so that losing a target lock in close-combat (because chaff, the target going out of the field of view of sensors or so) causes you to switch to rockets (missiles), to switch the sensor scanning mode or activate the sensors, and requires you to flip the cannon trigger down/up to select cannon again?

Like seriously?

Someone who can quote the Mig-29 flight manual can clarify it.

But I guess how it should go is this:

1) When you select a specific targeting mode like vertical scan, you will stay there until you select a another mode.

2) When you select cannon (flip the mechanical trigger) you can not launch rockets (guided or unguided) as you have deselected them, and you have cannon always in use regardless what is your targeting sensor, air-ground / air-air mode whatever...

3) When you lock target with the sensor (be it IRS via HMS or radar via vertical scan) you will get the cannon reticle and the firing solution. If you lose the lock, you return to the targeting mode.

4) You need to specifically select the funnel mode for the cannon, as it is a backup targeting mode where no range is metered nor the target lead. So it is a old-school gyro corrected visually ranging based the programmed target size. And that mode shouldn't come visible at any given moment do you have target locked or unlocked unless you specifically switch to it.

Meaning, if you have vertical search going and you lock the target, you will get firing solution for whatever weapon you have available for air-air mode. If you lose the lock, you will return to the search mode.

You never need to switch weapons back and worth, not need to change the targeting modes or search modes, no need to see a backup funnel gunsight etc.

According to the ED manual for the MiG-29 the default sensor for vertical and boresight mode is the IRST. The radar can be used but when you engage vertical scan it uses the infrared sensor.
