Announcement Trailer

Each aircraft’s flight model, sounds, external model and cockpit is recreated to an exceptional level of detail and accuracy. Great care has been given to offer scalable gameplay that suits your personal levels and wishes. This includes intuitive and consistent keyboard controls between aircraft, selectable difficulty settings, option for more forgiving flight dynamics, and even the ability to fly these aircraft with just your keyboard.

As with Lock On and the Flaming Cliffs series, MAC is focused on east and west counterpart aircraft, and this includes such legendary match-ups such as the Eagle and Flanker, Warthog and Frogfoot, Sabre and MiG-15bis, and the F-5E and MiG-21bis. MAC is a blend of both east and west, and this allows you to re-fight historical conflicts from the Korean War to today, and to create your own ‘what-if’ missions.

DCS World 2.5 Update

This week we merged the current DCS World 2.5 Open Beta to the DCS World 2.5 Release version.

Next week, 18 July, we plan the next DCS World update to include many fixes and improvements to the Hornet, DCS World 2.5, the Persian Gulf Map, and other modules.

DCS World Dedicated Server Update

With the launch of 2.5 earlier this year, we have been working diligently on an item we’ve been wanting to bring to DCS World for quite a long time: a dedicated server. It however was not until the launch of DCS World 2.5 was this possible, and hence the length of time this has taken.

As a dedicated server, the software will not require any graphics rendering, so no dedicated graphics card will be required and there is no audio requirement. This all greatly reduced server load overhead.

There will be a new web GUI to control the server. Operation of the dedicated server through the web GUI will operate much as the existing online server does now, but allow you to make changes remotely.

We plan to release the dedicated server in Autumn 2018. Afterward, we will investigate adding additional features to expand its capability.

Sincerely,

The Eagle Dynamics Team

DCS: Yak-52 Update

Our Yak-52 is very late in development and in final tests. In addition to putting the flight model through its paces with the help of actual Yak-52 pilots, we are also fine tuning the interactive training missions. The Yak-52 will be released next month!

Screen_180727_105642.jpg?bx_sender_conversion_id=5809303

More WIP screenshots

Having direct access to a Yak-52 from “The First Flight” Russian close formation aerobatic display team, we’ve been able to model the aircraft in extreme detail and accuracy. One element of this is the sounds of the aircraft. On multiple occasions we have sent our sound team to a local airfield near Moscow to capture the cockpit and external sounds.

During one recording session, we recorded a video of it.

  • External sounds were captured at various engine RPM settings and from different microphone vantages such as all around the aircraft, fly by, passes at different altitudes, and aspect angles.
  • Inside the cockpit, the focus was also on engine RPM at various settings, but also on switch clicks, the pneumatics (landing gear, flaps, and brakes), canopy opening and closing, etc.

The sounds environment will be as if you were there in the cockpit!

DCS: F/A-18C Hornet Update

Each two week cycle we are adding more and more new features to the Hornet while addressing bugs as they pop up. Our current focus for the rest of July and next month is on the following:

  • Complete the AIM-7 with addition of FLOOD, Home On Jam (HOJ), and LOFT sub-modes.
  • Integrate AIM-120B/C for STT employment (TWS employment will come later).
  • Integrate AIM-9X Block I. This includes both flight dynamics and new tones. Afterwards, in August or September, we will add the Joint Helmet Mounted Cueing System (JHMCS).
  • Complete RWS air-to-air radar mode with such features as Non-Cooperative Target Recognition (NCTR), AACQ mode, Latent Track While Scan (LTWS) mode, Pulse Repetition Frequency (PRF) settings, ability to change radar settings with TDC along outside of radar tactical area, radar speed gate setting, COLOR option, and more.
  • Complete radar warning receiver functionality with contact symbols and modifiers, EW HUD, and the OFFSET function.
  • Integrate Paveway II series laser-guided bombs (GBU-10, 12, and 16) with JTAC designation.
  • Further tuning of flight model with touch and go performance, gear drag, half flaps drag, takeoff pitch characteristics, and extreme angle of attack performance.
  • Brightness control for the HSI display.
  • Multiplayer carrier deck spawning issues.
  • Wingtip vortices errors at low airspeed.

There are certainly more items that we will be addressing over the next month. This is just a list of 10 of them.

Since our last list of Hornet academic training missions in a newsletter, we have two more:

DCS: Yak-52 Now Available!

DCS-Yak-52_280.jpg.095bc6f8611ea7767c2f03bab4f22fc9.jpg

DCS: Yak-52 early access will initially be available as part of the DCS World 2.5 Open Beta.

The Yakovlev Yak-52 is a tandem seat, radial engine, trainer aircraft that served as the primary aircraft trainer for the Soviet Union and many other nations. Introduced in 1979, the Yak-52 has been a popular choice among air forces given its rugged construction, ease of handling, tricycle landing gear, and simple maintenance. These same characteristic have made it a popular civilian aerobatics aircraft in its later years.

The Yak-52 is powered by a single Vedeneyev M-14P, nine-cylinder radial piston engine with 360 horsepower. We have created a new radial piston engine simulation from the ground up with a highly-realistic engine cooling model. The aircraft is very response given an empty weight of just one ton and large controls surfaces. Capable of pulling over 7 G and pushing up to negative 5 G, it’s no wonder the Yak-52 has been popular with aerobatic teams around the world.

Key Features:

  • Professional Flight Model that duplicates the flight characteristics of the Yak-52.
  • Detailed and realistic simulation of post-stall behavior that allows edge-of and out-of-envelope maneuvers.
  • Complete systems modeling of the Yak-52 that includes the engine, fuel, electrical and pneumatic systems.
  • Realistic, mouse-interactive cockpit in which almost all controls can be interacted with.
  • Accurate external and cockpit sounds that were recorded from a Yak-52.
  • Interactive training missions included. Learn to start up, taxi, takeoff, and land the Yak-52 like a real pilot.
  • Multiple liveries as both a military trainer and civilian aerobatic aircraft.
  • Cooperative multiplayer. Fly with a friend in the same aircraft.
  • Full virtual reality support for Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Microsoft Mixed Reality, and others.

World War II Assets Update

In addition to the new aircraft we recently discussed, we continue to add new ground units. The next will be the Sturmgeschütz (Stug) III. The Stug III was a German assault gun and the second most produced German armor vehicle of the Second World War. Designed as an infantry support weapon with a 7.5 cm L/48 gun, it was built on the Panzer III chassis, but was also used as a tank destroyer.

DCS World Update

Last week we released DCS World Open Beta version 2.5.3.2115. Unfortunately, as an open beta, it introduced a crash when using module maps and some VR-related issues. This week we addressed these issues in the Open Beta; however, we will be unable to move this Open Beta version to the Release version this week. Today’s Release version update will correct the AGM-65E crash.

Thank you for your patience.

DCS: P-51D Mustang Update

The Mustang was our first World War II aircraft and was pivotal in laying the ground work for our later warbirds. Since its initial release though, our graphic technologies have greatly improved, and the Mustang is starting to show its age. As with other DCS World aircraft, we are dramatically improving both the cockpit and external model of the Mustang. Both will use Physical Based Rendering (PBR) and Deferred Lighting (DF) to radically improve the aesthetics of this iconic DCS warbird. This will be a FREE update to Mustang owners!

Today we have some work-in-progress images of the updated cockpit.

Aircraft Flight with Folded Wings Explanation

With the release of DCS: F/A-18C Hornet, we’ve observed some confusion and false-assumptions regarding how an aircraft can fly, or even take off, with its wings folded up. The answer: physics.

For folded-wing aircraft’s flight characteristics, we conducted calculations for the wings and stabilators in XFLR5 software. The calculations were done using VLM (Vortex Lattice Method) with a non-viscous flow model. The program then determines the characteristics of the linear area of lifting force dependence based on the angle of attack. For horizontal flight, we have the following equation to calculate how the forces are balanced in the vertical plane:

ρv2/2 SСL= mg

The calculations show us that the folded wing configurations results in a 30% reduction in the coefficient of lift. To compensate for this reduction in horizontal flight lift, we need to either increase the angle of attack by 42% or increase the velocity 19%. Because the folded portion of the aircraft resides behind the center of gravity, a folded wing configuration results in reducing the negative pitching moment, which will also result in a reduced rotation speed at takeoff.

Initially, we didn’t take into account the fuselage, stabilators, and flaps lift capabilities, which all add to the total lifting force.

Unfolded wing

Unfolded-wing.jpg.4c41ea5a0000643ba121a4df8933062b.jpg

Folded wing

Folded-wing.jpg.6bca6a9812cb25f94044ae0e582bd675.jpg

For an aircraft with non-folded wings and mass of 35,000 pounds and 8 degrees of angle of attack, the velocity to create the lifting force would be 186 knots without taking into account the fuselage, stabilators, and flaps. For an aircraft with folded wings and a mass of 35,000 pounds and 8 degrees of angle of attack, the estimated velocity for creating lift is 222 knots (i.e. 186 +19% = 221,34 knots). In our model, the velocity for a mass of 35,000 pounds and an angle of attack of 8 degrees is 205 knots due to the fuselage, stabilators, and flaps.

DCS: Fw 190 A-8 Coming to DCS World!

Our next warbird coming to DCS World will be the Focke-Wulf 190 A-8 Würger (Strike) of the German Luftwaffe. Designed by Kurt Tank in the 1930s, the Fw 190 was a single seat German fighter powered by a powerful BMW 801 radial engine. When first deployed, it provide largely superior to its main rival: the Spitfire Mk.V. This in turn led to the development of the Spitfire Mk.IX. We look forward to some great online dogfights between the Fw 190 A-8 and the Spitfire Mk.IX!

Capable of both aerial and ground attack missions, the A-8 model entered production in February 1944 and included thicker armor and improved engine design. We see the “Butcher Bird” as a great addition to the stable of DCS World War II aircraft and will be a perfect fit for the Normandy map!

DCS: F-14 by Heatblur Simulations Available for Pre-Purchase

Pre-purchase and save $10 from

The DCS: F-14 Tomcat by Heatblur Simulations is now available for pre-purchase with a $10 discount. Early Access release of a feature-complete F-14B will be this winter.

The Grumman F-14 Tomcat was a two-crew, variable geometry, maritime air superiority fighter that served with the US Navy for 32 years and continues to serve with the IRIAF in Iran. The F-14 was the US Navy's frontline fighter from the 1970s until the mid-2000s. Over the course of its long service life it also became the US Navy's premier precision ground-attack platform and lone airborne reconnaissance asset.

F14.jpg

Outstanding features of the aircraft are the swing-wing configuration, crew of two, and the powerful AN/AWG-9 Weapons Control System (WCS) and radar. The AWG-9 allows employment of the powerful AIM-54 Phoenix air to air missile while the LANTIRN pod allows the ability to carry out precision ground strikes using laser guided bombs. The F-14 Tomcat was present during many pivotal historic moments such as the two Gulf of Sidra incidents, Operation Desert storm in Iraq, the conflict in Yugoslavia, Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and Operation Iraqi Freedom. It was also immortalized in the iconic motion picture, Top Gun, and starred in several other feature films including The Final Countdown, Executive Decision, and others.

In addition, the Tomcat was also a vital player in the Iran-Iraq war during the 80s, flying for the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force which had acquired the F-14A from the US prior the Islamic Revolution of 1979.

The Heatblur Simulations F-14A/B Tomcat aims to simulate this iconic aircraft as a high-fidelity module for DCS, being the culmination of several years of research, coding and modelling.

Special points of consideration amongst the many features are the external and internal graphic model created using laser scanning and photogrammetry from real Tomcats at various museums, the detailed modelling of the AN/AWG-9 and the ability to fly as a two-crew aircraft in multiplayer.

Please read the complete feature list here

MiG-29 for DCS World Available Now

This is a free update for Flaming Cliffs 3 customer, or a separate purchase option from DCS e-shop

This week we bring you the long-awaited update to the MiG-29A, MiG-29S, and MiG-29G! This is the last of the major updates to DCS: Flaming Cliffs 3 (FC3) line of aircraft. As with the other updated FC3 aircraft, the MiG-29 now incorporates a Professional Flight Model (PFM) that will continue to undergo development and improvement during the early access period.

Additionally, the MiG-29 cockpit and external model have been greatly improved, and other changes have been made like:

  • Option for casual gamer flight dynamics that prevents departures to stalls, automatic angle of attack limiter, and a G limiter. While the PFM for the MiG-29 is very realistic, some player may prefer a more forgiving aircraft to fly.
  • As part of the PFM, we have tuned the available angular velocity of roll.
  • The braking effect of the braking chute has been increased.
  • The fuel level in internal fuel tank 1 has been increased.

The MiG-29 "Fulcrum" is a Russian-designed, twin-engine, supersonic fighter. First operational in the early 1980s, the Fulcrum is a "light weight" fighter, comparable to the American F/A-18 Hornet and F-16. Designed to work in conjunction with the larger Su-27 Flanker, the MiG-29 is armed with an internal 30mm cannon and both infrared- and radar-guided air-to-air missiles. For air-to-ground tasks, the MiG-29 can be armed with a large array of unguided bombs and rockets.

In addition to a sophisticated pulse doppler radar, the MiG-29 is also equipped with a passive Infrared Search and Track (IRST) sensor that allows the Fulcrum to detect and target enemy aircraft just based on their infrared emissions. This allows the MiG-29 to make stealthy attacks with no warning!

The Fulcrum is a highly-maneuverable fighter in a dogfight, and when paired with the helmet mounted sight and the AA-11 "Archer" air-to-air missile, it is a very lethal adversary.

The MiG-29 has also been widely exported and has served in many countries that include Germany, Iran, Ukraine, and Poland.

Key Features of the MiG-29 for DCS World:

  • A professional level flight model provides unmatched flight physics that allow you to truly feel what it's like to fly this amazing aircraft. Designed and tested by a former MiG-29 pilot!
  • A true model of the MiG-29 flight control system that allows you to perform the "cobra" and other "out of the envelope" maneuvers.
  • Highly detailed, six-degrees-of-freedom (6 DOF) cockpit.
  • Accurate MiG-29 Fulcrum model, squadron markings, and weapons.
  • Includes instant action, single missions, and a campaign.
  • Battle the Hornet in head-to-head combat.

Note: The MiG-29 for DCS World is identical to the MiG-29 in Flaming Cliffs 3. Owners of FC3 do not need to purchase.

The main differences in the new PFM against SFM MiG-29

SFM had very basic stability/controllability model, where stick deflection defines required g-load (1 g auto-trim system).

In real life, the MiG-29 is a plane with natural positive stability without any g-load feedback (as Su-27, for example) with additional longitudinal stability augmentation system (LSAS) and dampers.

MiG-29 PFM carefully models real plane longitudinal stability and controllability characteristics of the plane itself as well as LSAS algorithms.

Lateral and directional stability and controllability were tuned as well.

The true effect from leading edge slats was added.

To model the distinctive features of the plane aeroelasticity effect were added for ailerons together with the limited ability of the actuators.

Roll rate is dependent on AoA and dynamic pressure and is very close to the real prototype.

The plane has a very pronounced effect of ground proximity to its longitudinal controllability, which is modelled.

Stick limiter algorithm is fundamentally changed in comparison to SFM to have it like the real thing.

Autopilot modes are made closer to the real.

What to do:

  • Fine tuning of lateral and directional stability/controllability.
  • Engine fine tuning to adjust thrust for 70-80% rpm range.
  • High AoA and post-stall effects and behaviour tuning.

DCS World 2.5 Open Beta Update

This week’s Open Beta release saw some key changes that include:

  • Introduced the updated MiG-29.
  • Increased range of the new HY-2 Silkworm anti-ship missile to 100 km.
  • Added the reload times of the SA-2 SAM and HY-2.
  • Increased launch rate of the Ticonderoga.
  • Improved AI taxi logic on the carrier deck.
  • Flight model improvement of the drag curve, motor performance, and dynamic launch zone of the AIM-9L/M Sidewinder.
  • Several AJS-37 Viggen and MiG-21bis fixes and improvements.
  • Corrected Hornet TDC moving to stow position after target breaks a lock, aerial refueling Instant Action missions, adjusted TCTS pod drag value, radar B-Sweep no longer moves outside the tactical area, the B-Sweep returns to normal scan after the radar loses lock (B-Sweep hang after an undesignate key break lock will be fixed for later this month).

You can read the complete change log on the DCS forum

We are on track to have the JHMCS with AIM-9X, FPAS page, fixed antenna logic, and AGM-65E and AGM-65F for the Hornet by the end of this month. In parallel, the HARM and ATFLIR pod are being developed, but these are complex tasks and will take longer.

DCS World Open Beta 2.5 Hotfix and Release Version

This week we released a second Open Beta update to address issues that some users encountered with the new, default controller profiles. Theses default profiles are now only used for a newly installed module, or the user manually loads them as a profile. Our next controller to add default profiles for will be the VKB Gunfighter Mk.II. Our goal is to have default controller profiles for all popular controllers.

You can read the entire Hot Fix list here

This week we also moved the current Open Beta to the Release version. You can read the change log here

The biggest element of this is the updated Release version is the availability of the new MiG-29 for DCS World

DCS: F/A-18C Hornet, DCS: Persian Gulf Map, and Su-33 Bundle Pack Last Days

The bundle pack consisting of the Hornet, Persian Gulf Map, and Su-33 ends this Sunday! In addition to the full pack, we are also offering a version of just the Hornet and Persian Gulf map. Find both on our e-Shop

You can also find both bundles on our Steam store at:

Modeling Update

We recognize that an important aspect to improve in DCS World is more realistic damage modeling in regards to localized effects, visual effects, affect on hit components, and type of weapon impact. Regarding the latter, the new damage model will be based on two types of weapon impact: penetrating impact and proximity impact. This provides us with three primary weapon effects on a unit: penetrating (projectiles), volumetric/pressure wave (high-explosive) and volumetric/shrapnel. This last effect allows weapon casing fragments to be tracked as unique objects entering the unit. This is not modeled in our current damage model system, but it will provide a great improvement to aircraft, and later, ground unit damage.

When a projectile or shrapnel penetrates a unit, the strength and functionality of the of the unit component it intersects with is affected. This includes components like spars, flight control surfaces, engine, weapons, fuel, etc. This, in turn, can greatly affect aircraft performance and system functionality.

The team has been working hard on this new damage model system, and the primary work is now complete. It is now undergoing internal testing. We will first roll out the new damage model system in our World War II aircraft, then later move to our more modern aircraft and then ground units.

p-51_x-ray.jpg

In these images, you can see the internal components of the P-51D and Fw 190 D-9 that are tracked as unique components that can be damaged.

About Early Access and Open Beta

For those not familiar with the terms Early Access and Open Beta, we want to use this newsletter to talk about how we implement them in regards to DCS World.

DCS World Early Access

Over the last few years, the concept of Early Access has taken traction with many companies in this industry. Before our adoption of this option, we were often bombarded with customer requests to test our products, or at least have the opportunity to have an early look. We offer Early Access to such customers, and we greatly appreciate the feedback on how we make the product even better. However, we also recognize that Early Access is not for everyone, and some players prefer their first experience in the game to be with a completed experience. We get that, and this option is not recommended for everyone.

The time a product remains in Early Access can vary widely based on the scope of the project, technical hurdles, and how complete the module is when it enters Early Access. Eagle Dynamics and all of our third parties strive to make this period as short as possible. It’s important to note that when a development team starts work on a new project while another project is still in Early Access, it is most often because it’s a separate internal team or elements of the team have completed their tasks on the Early Access project and it’s time for them to move them to move on to a new project rather than sit on their hands.

An Early Access module can be played on both the Open Beta and Release versions of DCC World. When we first release a new module or update it, we first release it to our Open Beta version of DCS World for “field-testing” and then we later move it to the Release version once we are sure there are no “blocking” issues.

DCS World Open Beta

Speaking of Open Beta and Release versions, we currently operate two versions of DCS World, the Open Beta version and the Release version (many fewer versions than before!). Because DCS World is a “living” project that changes daily, it’s possible for a project-wide bug to worm itself in and make the game unplayable for all. To prevent this and add a level of protection, we adopted Open Beta and Release versions.

Most every two weeks (sometimes more with hotfixes) we create a new Open Beta version that comprises the changes from the prior two weeks. Although this first goes through both internal and closed-external testing, it is possible for errors to slip through. In this case, the Open Beta is utilized to identify a “blocking” bug that prevents all customers from playing the game (not just customers of a single module). For those that take part in the Open Beta, we greatly appreciate it and thank you for your testing efforts. If a “blocking bug” is present in the Open Beta, we always have the Release version available. This is why the Release version is sometimes called the Stable version.

As such, the Open Beta version is for us to “field-test” new changes and check for any DCS-wide “Blocking” crashes, and the Release version is the result of the previous Open Beta that does not suffer any “Blocks.” As with Early Access, Open Beta is an option and may not be for everyone.

MiG-29 for DCS World on Steam

Download from Steam now

The MiG-29 "Fulcrum" is a Russian-designed, twin-engine, supersonic fighter. First operational in the early 1980s, the Fulcrum is a "light weight" fighter, comparable to the American F/A-18 Hornet and F-16. Designed to work in conjunction with the larger Su-27 Flanker, the MiG-29 is armed with an internal 30mm cannon and both infrared and radar guided air-to-air missiles. For air-to-ground tasks, the MiG-29 can be armed with a large array of unguided bombs and rockets.

In addition to a sophisticated pulse doppler radar, the MiG-29 is also equipped with a passive Infrared Search and Track (IRST) sensor that allows the Fulcrum to detect and target enemy aircraft just based on target infrared emissions.

For test, training and research purposes some aircraft were bought by the United States and Israel.

Key Features of the MiG-29 for DCS World:

  • A professional level flight model provides unmatched flight physics that allow you to truly feel what it's like to fly this amazing aircraft. Designed and tested by a former MiG-29 pilot!
  • A true model of the MiG-29 flight control system that allows you to perform "out of the envelope" maneuvers
  • Highly detailed, six-degrees-of-freedom (6 DOF) cockpit
  • Accurate MiG-29 Fulcrum model, squadron markings, and weapons
  • Includes instant action, single missions, and a campaign
  • Battle the Hornet in head-to-head combat

Air-to-Air Missile Development Update

A key aspect of modern air warfare is correct modeling of air-to-air missiles. We take this very seriously and have devoted new resources to further improving this. There are four fundamental aspects we are working on:

  • New missile flight dynamics
  • New autopilot roll, pitch, yaw damper and stabilization
  • New autopilot guidance and trajectory calculations
  • Modified seeker logic

We are using the AIM-7 as a "test bed" from which we will then move these improvements to other air-to-air missiles once we feel the technology is mature. We are currently testing AIM-7M with:

  • New missile flight model foundation using updated and more detailed aerodynamic data
  • Autopilot navigation system model
  • Missile guidance section and seeker

Here is a video that demonstrates the AIM 7 autopilot in a vertical test

Missile Flight Dynamics

This video demonstrates a new feature of the missile autopilot and flight model: stability and

control implementation. High altitudes and low air speeds provide low aerodynamic damping moments, and you can see missile motion in detail. Note the control surface deflections. The missile's autopilot dampens oscillations more quickly than with autopilot turned off.

This is just a test thought of the autopilot and aerodynamics of the missile. Naturally, air-to-air missiles are not designed for such low air speeds. In fact, the minimal IAS at intercept for an AIM-7 is about 700 km/h. At this speed, it's capable to reaching 5g's in less than a second.

Tasks in this area we're still working on includes the supporting math for thrust vectoring and refactoring/optimization.

Missile Autopilot

In regards to control systems and autopilot, we're working on:

  • Mathematical model of torque balance system (AIM-9-like missiles)
  • Inertial navigation system + data link for modern missiles
  • Сorresponding aircraft weapon systems
  • Almost every new missile needs its own autopilot type (based on common model)

Missile Seeker

For the guidance systems and seekers, there is a lot of work for the future. Building from the common math model, we will create detailed models for many seeker types.

When this effort is complete, we believe we'll have the most detailed air-to-air missile simulation in an entertainment product.

A Worthy Cause

will be flying the DCS World Hornet and comparing it to his own experience if we can get more than $7,500 of donations to victims of hurricane Michael.

Celebrating Three Years Over Nevada!

Three years ago, we released the DCS: NEVADA Test and Training Range map. Since then, it exited Early Access and has received many updates, including a massive one two years ago that included 14 new airfields; new towns and cities; additional landmarks; and expanded, detailed texture area. Just as important, the map has been home to a huge amount of content that includes numerous missions and 10 campaigns. The Nevada map has provided a very interesting blend of desert aerial combat in the form of Red Flag Campaigns, Weapons Training, and Aggressors Training, with “fun” flying through Las Vegas, the Hoover Dam and other interesting locations.

We’re happy to present to you this new Nevada map video that celebrates three years of Nevada flying!

Over the course of its long service life it also became the US Navy’s premier precision ground-attack platform and lone airborne reconnaissance asset.

DCS World 2.5 Update

Due to some issues we wish to resolve in the Open Beta before moving it to the Release version, there will be no update to the Release version this week. For next week though, on 21 November, we plan to include the following in the new Open Beta:

  • Corrected Hornet radar break-lock, elevation scanning, and ACM modes.
  • Integration of radar lock data onto the JHMCS for the Hornet.
  • Addition of infrared-guided AGM-65 Mavericks for the Hornet.
  • Corrected CLIMB function for the Hornet FPAS page.
  • Corrected remaining AGM-65E errors.
  • Updated Hornet Early Access Guide.
  • Updated Persian Gulf map with additions of Kish Island airfield, Al Bateen airfield, Lavan Island airfield, Bandar-e-Jask airfield, Abu Dhabi International Airport, Sas Al Nakheel airfield, Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center, and the Yas Viceroy with Formula 1 racetrack.
  • Continued tuning and improvements to the MiG-29 flight and engine model.

DCS Warbirds Update

Earlier this year we showed off a greatly updated cockpit for the DCS: P-51D Mustang that will be released next month. In addition to a beautiful, new cockpit, we’re also updating the external model to include both P-51D-25 and P-51D-30 versions! This includes improvements to both the 3D model and textures.

Along with the Mustang, we’ve also completing work on a fantastic new cockpit for the Bf 109 K-4 and a Fw 190 D-9 that takes advantage of both deferred shading and physically based rendering.

In parallel, the P-47D, Fw 190 A-8, and Mosquito are all making great progress in both the external model, cockpit, flight model and systems.

FW190A8-WIP-2.jpg

More screenshots

A big element also getting a lot of attention has been the new damage model we discussed in an earlier newsletter. We’ve been using the Spitfire as the test bed and the progress has been steady and good. Once we’re happy with the results, we’ll first incorporate the new damage model system into the other warbirds.

Next month, we’ll make available a wonderful P-51D Mustang campaign by Reflected Simulations.

Virtual Reality Update

We see VR as an amazing tool to enjoy DCS World and the future of PC gaming for many. To make DCS World even better, we’ve been working on some great VR improvements that include:

  • Optimized VR performance.
  • Touch control that allows direct finger interaction with cockpit controls.
  • Touch control to allow the right and left Touch controllers to act as stick and throttle when positioned correctly in the virtual cockpit and holding down the middle-finger button.

These will provide a much more immersive VR experience, particularly for those flying warbirds and other aircraft that do not require HOTAS controls.

DCS World 2.5 Update

This week we updated the release version of DCS World to include many of the new features and fixes from the past two weeks of Open Betas. As always, the goal of the Open Betas is to introduce and test new features and fixes in order to first make sure they do not result in game crashes. Once we are satisfied with the stability of an Open Beta, and that it adds plenty of new content and fixes, we update the Release version.

Noteworthy changes to the DCS World 2.5.3 Release update this week include:

  • Restored Instant Action debriefings
  • Adjusted AI attack altitude when using bombs
  • Added multiple liveries for several ship classes
  • New China Pack liveries
