I think I have said this before but the A-29 will likely be the most modern combat aircraft we have in DCS when it is released. This alone makes it worth it imo.

I have never thought about that. . . but yer it would definitely have some of the most modern avionics and sensors. . .

Modern BY date sure. Avionics wise, Not necessarily better than other aircraft.

Ok sure the LCD Multifunction displays will be pretty modern, but besides that, i don't see how the core avionics suite will be better than actual combat aircraft given that Tucano does not have a Radar, Fly by wire aids, or medium range A2A missiles, or carry internal towed decoys, or have super long stand off weapons.

Yea yea i get it, its COIN, it doesn't need Radar or A2A medium range missiles, or super long stand off A/G weapons. But what what matters for ground attack? is its defensive suite better than an A10's? better RWR? better Countermeasures set? does it include Missile warning system? DOes it have Datalinks? if so IS that datalink link 16 or a datalink at least communicate via gateway with L16? What helmet mounted ( or monacle) displays for off bore sight acquisition?

Things to note because flashy displays alone don't make an aircraft "modern" in terms of capability.

What other aircraft in DCS World is likely to get GBU-39s and APKWS like Laser Guided Rockets? I give the F-15E a 50% chance of getting SDBs if that.

AFAIK the A-29 is set to carry both. Not to mention Laser JDAMs. And I am pretty sure it has a MWS / RWR or at least the provisions for one and same for other fancy features like HMD. It is an aircraft that is still being developed.

For the role that it is designed to fill. It will be the most modern combat aircraft in DCS World.

I wouldnt be too quick to assume what exact features the A29 would or wouldn't have unless they are confirmed by the Razbam development team.

APKWS only entered IOC with USMC in 2012, on Rotary Winged aircraft. and is only being first tested from fixed wing aircraft fired from the USAF A10's in 2013, however first combat deployed of APKWs on fixed wing isn't until 2016.

Remember that the Super Tucanos DOI is 2003 with the first operator being BRazil. Weapons like SDB or AKPWS came years later. Whos to say they Razbam are going to be representing a 2016 - 2019 Super tucano, and not one from earlier 2000s, just as ED is doing a 2007 F16C blk 50 and not a present day one with goodies like JAASM, gbu39 or APKWS? ( due to being unable to legally obtain more modern documentation of newer versions)

Furthermore features and/or weapons also may vary depending on which nation is represented as an operator, just as with any other aircraft.

First of all, the A-29 does not use APKWS. They use a Turkish system that effectively works the same way as APKWS.

And we've been told they have access to the A-29 simulator. Why would they still be using a 2003 simulator in 2017+? I think it is more likely than not that the A-29 that is going to be modeled will be after 2007.

I can agree the A29 footage is much better then the quality of the robotic narrator

As for the "headline" title, in reality, the US doesn't need (or want) the A29 for as long as they are able to maintain a fleet of A10's.

Well, maintaining the A-10's is quite expensive compared to the Supertucano. It's a more powerful CAS plane and it's too much for fighting mostly infantries only which is the case in Afghanistan and Africa. These countries don't have any tanks really and they're mostly using hit and run tactics. So you need a lighter plane with lower costs overall to do the job. The Supertucano seems to be exactly that type of plane. The Syrians and the Libyans for instance use the L-39 for that matter. Not saying the US should do that as well, because they can afford to spend more money while trying to be as thrifty as possible.
