TF-51D training missions

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I downloaded the DCS World 1.2.8, eager to try the free civilian TF-51D. To my slightly disappointment, the only training missions (videos and interactive) available are for the Su-25T, whilst there are none for the Mustang. Are they planned to be released in future, or this is perk of payware P-51 and I just should resort to Youtube recordings of said missions?

I think you can download the training missions of the P-51D without paying for it (maybe on the DCS site). After that you can open the mission in the editor and change the P-51D there to a TF-51D and then hit the play button. I don't see another way than that^^

If you can't download the training mission like Zabuza said, I can upload it for you. Also, if you are interested in flying the TF-51 in multiplier combat. d0o0m has made a fantastic mission for the Dogs of War (DoW) server which uses a TF-51 as a photo reconnaissance plane. I have played it a few times and it is a lot of fun. The objective is to fly the TF-51 to a predetermined target snap a picture and make it back to base in one piece. All the while you are being escorted by other P-51's.

Right on, I have to admit I was a little surprised when I saw this thread, I was thinking that the P-51D would have been a direct cross over. I guess it's always the little things that get you during a new release. At least its an easy fix, I think... I don't remember any of the start up, taxi, takeoff, and landing training missions mentioning anything about the K-14 or any of the other stuff not feature in the TF-51.

Thank you for responses and advices! There are no official tutorial missions for the P-51D available on DCS site, but I downloaded third party trainer mission (http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/203559/index.php) and it worked fine after changing the aircraft to TF-51D. I appreciate the offer of uploading P-51 training missions for me, but I'm afraid it might be against the rules (as the missions are part of module that I didn't buy) and I wouldn't like to get anyone in trouble for their kindness.

I have watched Zabuza's videos (thank you!), as well as a few other recordings, mainly of standard takeoffs and landings.

I'd welcome tutorials concerning topics that are not yet covered, such as short field take off and landing, operations from grass strips and emergency procedures. If you feel like doing longer tutorial, I'd also happily watch planning and flying cross-country.

The manual for the P-51 can be downloaded from here.

EDIT: It is not the most up-to-date version but it is mostly correct.

I only got into this whole DCS thingy two weeks ago because of a free TF-51D. It hooked me up and a week later I decided to use summer promo and buy a full version. I admit though, that lack of training missions made these first days hard, with waaay too many "crash and burn" episodes during take-offs and landings. Youtube and ED forums were a bit helpful, but only a bit. Going through tutorial missions when I finally got the "proper" Mustang saved me lot of nerves and trouble ("Whoa, If only I knew this tip or that trick earlier"). These tutorials are the best ones I've seen in any warbird sim up to that point.

I think free Mustang is an awesome tool to encourage non-DCS warbird flyers to try the sim (this is what happened to me after all). Imagine, for example, someone from Warthunder or WoP deciding to advance to more realistic products. Then the person downloads free DCS world package with TF-51 and tries to come to grips with it. Some will catch the bug, but others might get discouraged, frustrated and uninstall the whole thing after a week. I'd say it's important to keep them interested by providing some basic tutorials. Yeah, yeah, they can be "converted" from the payed version, and downloaded somewhere on the internet, but in my opinion, a new user should not be forced to look for these elsewhere. ED, make the shift to DCS as user friendly as as possible, you compete for new customers.
