Intel Z3## build

Recommended Posts

I could put everything a on a 1TB NvMe drive but the price is prohibitive at the moment.

Q) So for SATA6 drives, 2x 500Gb vs a 1TB, any advantage?

If you take 2 x 500GB you can split OS and GAMES on 2 independent drives, that may help.

I'd then put the PageFile on the OS drive as well.

It will make it easier to manage concurrent I/O to either DCS+SWAP or DCS+OS, which cannot take place with 1 drive, per definition.

Why don't you get a 9600K to spare some money?

I think 8 physical cores is a better purchase for future proofing. Also the 9600K doesn't seem to have much of an advantage over an 8600K.

Maybe you can begin with a SATA 500Gb or 1Tb... and see how it goes.

Initially I was going to go for:

860 Evo 500GB OS + other FS stuff

860 Evo 500GB DCS + X-Plane

Alternatively:

860 Evo 250GB OS

860 Evo 1TB all FS stuff

Take two, the only downside is the little higher price and more cables, everything else is positive ;)

BTW...check ADATA's newest NVMe drive, maybe that is in reach.

It's got excellent reviews and a real good price, 1TB is 225.€ iirc.

For that, if it is the money. I'd take just 1 NVMe over 2 SATA SSD's for now. 1TB is plenty too.

Yeah, didnt wanna confuse you, but that is how I think.

T-Topology and other layouts for dummies like us :)

I was a bit wrong with my statement above, also seems like it is less often used as I thought.

Anyway, worth the time if you work RAM

# Not sure where to start looking for a GSync compatible monitor, but they should be less expensive than full GSync.

# Not convinced there's any real world difference between SSDs on the SATA bus???

# I think a full tower case is best for that D15 cooler.

I just read the Radeon VII review at Guru3d. Though it's a bit early to say it all, it beat the 1080ti in almost any game and discipline, trading blows with the 2080 and recent Titans, in BF-V it kills the 2080ti, yeah yeah, killed it.

With 16GB HBM2, that cant be bad for DCS and you have native Freesync. I'd really look into that card. The 1080ti is likely also higher in price, has less VRAM and less power. Both are an old architecture tho, but that is how it is.

The rest looks OK, I would just NEVER EVER buy or use any Home version of any Windows, but I own more than 1 PC and have an avid home network.

All great...but get a new PSU for this nice rig.

You can keep the old one as a spare and testing device but dont use it for such a nice machine, too risky.

Enjoy :)

Real quick:

1) AMD 7nm just around the corner... announcement at Computex, availability Q3. I know... Intel still faster currently, but we have to see just how good the 7nm process is.

Specific thoughts:

CPU

i7-9700K £400

If you are intent buying now, sure why not. Is a good CPU with fast clocks and still lots of cores.

H/S

Noctua NH-D15 £80

Personally I'd get the NH-U12A despite it "only" having 120mm fans. The new Sterrox fans are incredible. (I currently use 7 of them which replaced Noiseblocker and Vardars).

GPU

EVGA GTX 1080Ti FTW3

Fine for 1440p. No comment.

RAM

G.Skill Trident Z 32GB (2x16) 3200MHz CL14-14-14-34 £405

Excellent choice: this was my choice too. Best balance between bus speed and timings and good value still. Difference between Trident Z and the Ripjaws is just the heatsink I believe... all B-die. But you might check G.Skill's website to check validation on the motherboard of your choice. G.Skill do keep lists you can look up.

M/B

Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Elite £163

Excellent choice again... you've done your homework!

Storage

Samsung 860 Evo 500GB £72

Samsung 860 Evo 500GB £72

1TB SATA2 HD

Personally I'd use NVMe SSD slots if I were you. And ditch the spinning rust.

PSU

Corsair RM750x £90

The RMx is the best choice. Fully digital modern PSU. I think gold rated from memory. Good value for money. And 750W is sufficient. Seasonic's are good too so if you find an incredible deal of them go for it, but the price of the Corsair is already low.

Case

Anidees AI8 Full Tower Case £90

This is very much personal choice. And I don't know what I would buy nowadays. Both of the case companies I like are out of businesses (Hex Gear and Caselabs).

Display

Acer Predator XB271HU 27" GSync IPS £600

No comment. Why not. Seems fine.

Controllers

Thrustmaster T.16000M FCS HOTAS £110

CH Rudder Pedals

TrackIR

Other stuff

Windows 10 Home Retail £100

X-rite i1 Display Pro monitir calibrator £178

Display Port 1.4 cable 3m £10

TrackIR alternative: DelanClip if you want to save a bit of money.

Have fun with it... should be cool.

New monitor for DCS

Looking to get this 27inch IPS display which is on offer for around £500:

Acer Predator XB271HU

Q) Can anyone suggest a cheaper Freesync alternative IPS display?

Q) I'm going for IPS because of the image quality, is a 4ms IPS a practical disadvantage against a 1ms TN panel in DCS?

Regards, Django.

DCS is not a fast paced title that would require extreme refresh rates. You'll be hard pressed to find a monitor with true 1ms in a IPS panel.

I also took a look at some 21:9 1440p displays, not sure if I want a curved screen since I'll be using the monitor for other tasks. What do people think of this LG IPS display:

LG 24UM88C £490

Both it's frequency and Freesync range can be expanded using this tool to up 75Hz from 60Hz and to 35-75Hz from 40-60Hz respectively.

So I suppose I should also ask what people think about DCS and FPS over 60?
