Which gpu is better?

Recommended Posts

Budget is tight and im trying to get the best bang for the buck.

Asus rog strix gtx 1060 6gb Vs. Asus rx 580 8gb

Im playing on a screen resolution of 1080p and wanna go for the rift next. It works with my current GPU r9 290 thanks to kegeteys vr shader mod.

My specs are:

i7 6700K oc to 4500 MHz

16 gb of ddr 4 ram at 2600 MHz

What would u buy accept a 2080 ti? ;)

Thx!

Why would you want a 1060?

If you have a 1080 I'm not sure what you want to achieve and a 2070 wont be that much better you would need to go 2080 at least. ??

I was using the Rift on a 1070..... just, by playing with settings.

Go--> 1070ti if you can get one at a good price. The minimum 1070 (8GB) for VR and you will still be limited for mission size / eye candy.

Danm it coffee :music_whistling:

Oh right mmmm 2080Ti Ouch$ ;)

MMM let me think 1.7ish+ Ghz water cooled only because the 3 fan units increase case heat. Plus you'll want at least some performance increase right?

You'll get by with CPU and RAM

Actually if you can get by on what you already have, wait, new AMD video cards are coming out which may or may not be the answer but should help bring GPU prices down.

I personally haven't used AMD cards in a long time.. but I'm watching youtube comparisons of 1060 vs 580 and they're pretty close.

but I think what would be more relevant of a comparison is how much better is a 1060 6gb or a 580 vs your current r9 290?

For another $150 USD you could get an RTX 2060 which almost keeps up with a GTX 1080, and would make you smile a little bigger when you use it for the first time.

580 vs 1060

290 vs 1060 Mute this video for your own sanity

2060 vs 580

rtx 2060 vs gtx 1080

Personally if i were in your shoes I'd put the money in the piggy bank and wait out another $150US for a bigger performance increase. Or see if AMD does anything later in the year. By then you might have enough for a 2070. Beyond the 2070 you'll probably want a faster OC or CPU and higher resolution monitor/VR headset to justify the power from the GPU, at least until vulkan implementation.

My general philosophy with GPUs is the more you spend the longer you go before asking us this question upon release of the next generation or three of GPUs

If bang for the buck is what you need, stick with AMD stuff. Get the best AMD card you can afford.

Nvidia & Intel = better performing

AMD = better value (CPUs and graphics cards)

Been that way for years.

First of all thx everybody for taking the time.

It´s a hard choice between the two thats for sure. My system is currently at the very edge of being able to run DCS in VR with an OR.

I would like to buy one in the near future and a GPU that can somewhat handle it.

Gonna wait a bit longer and see how the prices evolve :)

cheers, rog

I really only play 4 games between them to flight simulators and more precisely to DCS, and in DCS with my signature team I play with the preset high at 1920x1080 at 60 fps (something unthinkable in other simulators)

My PC:

i7-4770k

GTX 1060 6Gb

SSD 500 GB

16 RAM

gonna check that out, thx

I'd say neither the 580 nor the 1060 will be sufficient to drive a Rift. That aside I would go with a used 580. Those are pretty cheap right now.

I did borrow a rift and managed quite okay with my r9 290, it didn´t look that bad actually thanks to kegeteys shader mod. the rifts resolution isn´t that great and so it didn´t bother me to tune down a couple of things, the immersion gained was worth it. I turned ASW on and depending on the workload i managed to hold 45 fps.

so i do think a 580 would help me out here, besides as u say they are pretty cheap. If i sell my old one it should be a rather non expencive endeavour ;)
