HELP: Open Beta keeps crashing to desktop

I am using windows 7, I am not running overclock settings, I have tried the troubleshoot guide in your (BIGNEWY) signature have a dozen times with no success. I have bought and installed the super carrier module but haven't tried it yet.

The Supercarrier module itself is mighty cool, even though it's only a place to take off and land. I'm sure you'll really like it.

As for running without overclocks, most graphics cards (including your GTX 1080) are factory overclocked. It causes no problems at all for most stuff. DCS World, however, isn't so much a video game as an extremely visually-pleasing stress test.

I'm playing around with down-clocking my 1080 Ti, just to see how it behaves. It'll take a while. I'm currently running a -150 MHz GPU clock, with default VRAM clock for my card (1400 MHz X8.) I use MSI Afterburner to set my fan curve so the GPU chip never exceeds about 60 degrees C.

I get shot down a lot so it'll take more than a wee while. I need to overclock my piloting skills :)

I'm sure we'll get a handle on this. Eventually. I don't know what ED is doing with the Vulkan API conversion, but I bet it's gonna kick ass.

Peace and happy warfare

OK!!!

I've had luck flying with my 1080 Ti downclocked to 1850 MHz, instead of the usual 2000+ MHz.

Flew a couple strike missions from the Supercarrier with the F/A-18. Minimum stuttering, minimum BS. No crashes so far. Imma have to try this out a while.

It's possible that I could run it fast with watercooling, but I'm too cheap and lazy to try it right now. We'll see. If it works, it works and I can try running the GPU faster with the fans going full blast, and see if we can hang.

XAiracobraX, try running your GTX 1080 slower. It won't kill framerates that badly and might just work. Give it a try, you've nothing to lose.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have done much testing with down-clocking my GPU, even to the point of making sure the GPU clock speed stays below 1750 MHz during load. I am still experiencing crashes, usually during long missions, about 30 min to 45 min into the mission, I suspect there is a memory leak happening somewhere based on the memory error that shows during the few different blue screen's I have gotten (of the more than a dozen crashes only 3-4 have been blue screens).

I have following BigNewy's troubleshooting steps many times, ran repair many times, I even fully uninstalled and reinstalled the open beta. I am trying to play 2.5.6.50793 open beta running on a GTX 1080, with the 446.14 drivers, an i5-4690k running at stock 3.5 Ghz with 32 GB of ram and a 32 GB page file, on windows 7, using a single monitor running at 2560x1440 resolution on reasonable settings for my machine averaging 110 -120 fps.

My latest test was today, it blue screened and restarted the computer so there isn't a log file. I don't have these problems with any other game or program.

Please attach your crash zip that is created.

It may contain a track replay, I will replay it and see if I can reproduce a crash

thank you

Where do I find the crash zip? I look for the logs but didn't see any created. I have enabled the full debug log using the autoexec.cfg posted in the sticky, but that post doesn't describe in what folder/path the file(s) will be saved.

I looked around for a crash zip file, I don't know where to look, didn't find one. So I played mission again, it crashed again. This time it produced log files, I have attached everything in the logs folder in the attached file. It contains logs of two crashes one on the 6/6 and another from today on 6/13. Please let me know where to look for a crash zip file

So after more testing I have discovered that it seems related to MSAA being turned on AND the birth of a lot of units (air units in testing) at once. All the times it was crashing I had MSAA set to 2X. I have MSAA off now, and have been able to succussfully fly mission 7 and 8 from the blue nosed ba$Tards campaign at least 3 times each without crashing.

The attached picture shows first the settings I was using that caused CTD. And second the settings that so far have not had any crashes in about (6-7 full 1.5hr missions).

The main two differences are MSAA and rain drops being turned on in the first. But since I never saw any rain drops in those missions I figured it was MSAA when the units popped in. I want to turn rain drops on and try that next.

Should my machine be able to run MSAA at 2X with these settings or am I just asking too much of it?

After further testing, MSAA still off but with Rain Droplets check-on I saw something interesting. Playing the point du hoc mission , I think its mission 9, of the blue nosed campaign for the p51d, I could see the rain drops in the air outside but no drops or streaks on the canopy. Flew the hole mission, landed back at the airfield and upon stopping all of a sudden water streaks appeared on the canopy glass, I ended the mission shortly after. I selected end mission on the next screen and then tried to exit DCS. Upon exiting DCS crashed with a solid black screen.

In all my flights before with air droplets checked (on), even flying through clouds, I never saw the water streaks on the canopy before. With the water droplets checked (on) in the P51 are other people seeing water streaks on canopy during flight in rain and/or clouds? For me I had a perfectly clean canopy, no streaks, and it appears that sometimes I get CTD with air droplets checked. So far I have not had any CTD with air droplets unchecked (off).

I will say that the CTD seem related to using MSAA at 2x with AA off on my computer with large numbers of units birth/airstart/spawn part-way through a mission. I have played more with air droplets on and haven't had any other crashes. When MSAA was on I was getting CTD on almost every mission

Ever since the latest update, OB 2.5.6.50979, I have been having numerous CTD's. I have no clue where to even look for the problem. BigNewy, each time I look at the log, it seems there is something different. Not enough Memory, graphic driver stops working, can't load this or that...... This time it wouldn't even load the mission.

Seems to be mostly when I'm on a MP server. This time though it was SP. Not sure if it's MP, or mission scripting. I've done the cleanup, repair and removed all mods per your signature and it seems to not help.

Attaching latest log file. Please Help! :helpsmilie:
