Prescription Glasses and VR - How does this work?

Notso

Recommended Posts

I'm currently flying DCS without glasses and it seems OK, but I wonder if some of the slight blurriness or hard to read cockpit stuff is due to my eyes or just the inherent VR capability.

My distance vision is fine - I can see 20/20 on a good day at distance with both eyes open but I use Rx reading glasses for PC work and reading small print on stuff. I also have a bit of astigmatism. I don't wear glasses for normal stuff like driving, Flying, etc - just the reading glasses.

Will this affect the image quality in the VR Headset since the eye pieces are essentially the same as looking at something really close up? Or do you eyes treat it as a distant object? Can you even wear glasses under the HMD?

As an aside, I'm somewhat surprised HMDs don't have adjustable focus ability like a rifle scope or binoculars do? I guess that would add a big layer of complexity.

Everything in VR is focused at the same distance, which is several meters. So if you are far sighted, you should be fine without glasses.

You can always try to fit your glasses inside the headset and check the difference. Many glasses will fit, I use them all the time.

you use your FAR sight prescription; if you have one, if you dont you dont need to worry! I use VR optician which provides "insert" lenses, which means I neither risk damaging my glasses nor my VR lenses

I used prescription glasses with a CV1 and then with my Rift S.

Unfortunately I found them sometimes touching which resulted in abrasions and slight scratches on the lenses. I then promptly sourced a set of VR prescription lenses which clip into my Rift S and are much easier to use. Very recommended.

I solved the minor abrasions using a plastic scratch resolver.

Lenses inside HMD's are focused at infinity. If you have 20/20 vision (or even a bit less on a bad day...;)) and only use reading glasses you don't need anything.

I'm sorry for one last question.... Are VR prescription inserts Model specific? I assume they are shaped for the specific model such as Oculus, Rift, HTC.

Any idea of a rough idea on cost?

Yes they are highly model specific, price depends on prescription, but expect between $100+$200 for a set.

Personally with the S, I have no real need for them.

I have plenty of room inside for even my now, nearly oversized specs, with no bumping or grating, and these frames for instance did not fit inside the CV1.

Hi stuartaston, is that info correct about short distance prescription? I was told distance prescription on more than one occasion, and purchased distance lenses on the base of that, which work well in the oculus

Mine (vr optician) were $88 shipped to US . That price included $12 extra because of my prescription high-spherical number .

I ordered these a couple of days ago. How long does it normally take to ship? I didn't realize they were shipping from Germany.

Website states somewhere they need 3 weeks to get them made but mine where sent after only 8 days. Shipping may go up to 2 weeks to the US, certainly now with the holidays in sight.

If your go to vr opticians you can check...

Anyone using vr optician lenses ?

Always had better than 20/20 each eye(Airforce pilot) but the age is kicking in, and right eye is slightly off today. I can see everything in my VR-headset but it isnt as Sharp as it should be.

Im thinking of getting one lens, for the right eye. Anyone using only one? If so, does it work ok?

Q Should I buy?

I normsally dont use glases but if I squint I will see a tiny bit sharper.

I just got my Reverb and its not sharp but if I move my head just 10cm forward it will get sharp?

If you have to squint and it's clearer, you need glasses :D

Also, make sure you took the plastic cover off of the lenses. Seems to be a common mistake.

Has anyone purchased prescription lenses for a Pimax headset? If so, where did you get them and how well did they work? I have the 8K+ and wanted to get prescription lenses. Also, do I use my "continual use" prescription or my "reading glasses" prescription?
