Update,

I have sent a request to the Board to be able to use these sounds.

They promise a reply in five days.

[Question]: Dear Sir's,

I would like permission to use the Spitfire engine sound in a simulator.

The sim is DCS World.

The sound would be available to install in the sim without charge of any kind.

Free.

Full credit and any copy write and usage restrictions shall be included.

This simulator is the most realistic one available today.

It would be a Honor to use the real sound for such a iconic aircraft.

You can see the sim at

https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/products/world/

Thank you for your consideration of this matter.

Thank you for submitting your enquiry to The British Library Humanities Reference Service. You will receive a reply within 7 working days.

Update 2,

I did a engine sound test using some of the sites sound i recorded.

Two small snipits of sound substituted in the correct place.

Incredible! What a difference!

With a little bit of editing this will be the cat's Meow!:D

The search goes on for a good cannon sound.:)

IMO the in cockpit sounds in Spit are just on a different level compared to everything we've got so far. The sound was the fist thing that struck me after entering the pit and starting up the engines. Purely fantastic.

I don't know how much it reassembles the real think but I'm sure that ED did a great job of recording the real audio. This is no just a belief but looking on how the BS

there are much reasons to think that ED didn't do it in a different way.

I just hope that we're not running into situation that the sounds will be changed based on some yt videos.

And I'm sure they didn't. The soundset, as of now, is a mixed bag of samples recorded off a Merlin (awesome idle sounds and high RPM external sounds), and some non-Merlin, generic engine samples, already heard in other sims. That's why although I admit the set is the best we've had for DCS warbird so far, it doesn't quite resemble the Spitfire (only in some specific RPM ranges), so the threads like this one will pop up every now and then until better default or custom set is ready.

Not a showstopper for me, though, at least not in this very early stage of post-release development.

Spitfire engine sound files

I received this reply from GB today,

Dear Greg,

Thank you for your email.

Which spitfire recording would you like to use? If you could send me details of the recording that interests you we can then take it from there.

Best wishes

Cheryl

Dear Greg,

Thanks for letting me know.

I can send you an mp3 for no charge or I can pass you over to our audio engineer who will be able to prepare a wav version from the original tape. This does carry a charge of £20 + VAT however and you would need to wait for the request to be scheduled.

Which option works best for you?

Best wishes

Cheryl

I have requested both files and will pay for the wav version.

I will post a link to the files when I have them so members may use them to create a sound mod.

Any usage restrictions will be included.

Stay tuned............

Received this e-mail today!

Dear Greg,

I’ll send the mp3 later on this morning via Wetransfer so please look out for an email from them.

I have also attached a sound archive copying form which you will need to complete and then forward to our audio engineer Tom Ruane (email tom.ruane@bl.uk). I’ve filled in the recording details & description of use for you, so that just leaves full contact details and specifics regarding the format (bit depth, sampling rate etc) for you to complete.

Please feel free to mention that you have already been in contact with me about the recording and I’ve quoted you a £20 + VAT copying fee.

The required credit will be “courtesy of the British Library Board”.

Best wishes

No and I have not heard from the engineer yet.

I will e-mail Cheryl Tipp on Monday and ask her to check that my e-mail to the engineer was received in the correct dept.

Waiting is the hard part!

Sent today to GB.

Good day,

I have sent the form via email to the address you provided.

I have not heard back after a week.

Could you check to see that the form arrived in the correct dept. and to the correct person?

If there are other Spitfire engine sounds available, I would be interested in those as well.

Thank you for your attention in this matter.

Status update

Here is where we are at.

Weeks later!

I sent the request form to the engineering dept.

I did not get a reply.

I waited...................................................

I sent another e-mail to Miss Tipp.

One week later she responds the the engineer never received the form.

I send the form to her so she may carry it to him.

One week later, he responds with a request number and a Phone number to call to pay the fee.

He will then transfer the audio.

I have to have the phone company UNLOCK the phone line so I may make a international call!

I call the number and after 10 rings, the answering machine picks up.

I leave a message.

DCS Merlin SPitfire IX has some sounds from the more aggressive sounding Griffon engine ! This is a huge downside for me for DCS reputation as a good researching sim team.

There are so MANY examples of sounds from these two completely different sounding engines that i cannot understand why they mixed it up !?

A Merlin Spit sounds nice and brave and perhaps a bit louder in the IX while under more boost; P51D as well. BUT a Griffon engine with much more displacement (like DB605) is like day and night !! OMG, even Warthunder did it better .....
