The "Un-Official RoughMet Patch" is here!!

Recommended Posts

This is An unofficial patch to bring most of DCS's older modules to life, and allow custom roughmet creation for skinners, by taking advantage of PBR(Physics Based Rendering) introduced in the release of 2.0 and 2.5. This patch is MP safe, and Mod manager friendly.

These are as set of Stock-a-like/Realistic-ish RoughMet textures designed to bring some of DCS's older modules to life by taking advantage of PBR (Physics Based Rendering). And To enable skin creators to make their own custom RoughMet textures for their liveries. Something that was previously Impossible due to game limitations. The Patch is OVGME/JGSME friendly, and is also an easy manual install if thats more your style. We highly suggest the use of a mod manager, as a manual UN-Installation is going to be tedious. These are all DCS Multiplayer safe, and have been tested and confirmed to not fail the IC. A small disclaimer, while care was taken to maintain the stock-like / realistic appearance of the jet, we are NOT professional graphics artists, and as such these skins, while good looking, are not perfect in every way.

Can I also install it by putting it into the saved games folder?

Unfortunately not, the patch works by taking advantage of the way DCS does callouts for loading either specmaps, or in this case Roughmets. If the game finds RoughMets inside of default locations, it loads them instead of the Specmaps that have been modified by JSON files. Its well worth taking a few moments to set up OVGME to manage the mod. :)

Thanks! I reactivated DSGME for that patch. The F-5 is really looking great - thanks for the work :)

The army huey, however, looks too glossy imho - but maybe I did sth wrong? Is it possible to change the rough met file thats used with every Skin?

Question; i have searched the changelog thread for the Viggen, but can't nail it down. But, i thought the Viggen received a texture upgrade a view months back. Did this not include pbr and the roughment thingys?

Just trying the F-15....and it looks great, kudos :) Sure, pretty shiny now....but i take that!

Tomcatter,

it is possible to change them if youd like. Just go into the mod folder and alter the roughmets for the planes/heli youre interested in. Then reload the mod pack, and youre good to go with a new default :thumbup:

I'm not a skin maker - but I noticed there were different textures for the same parts of the huey in the mod's Folder. I though those might be different versions one could somehow activate.

The viggen only received PBR textures for its engine components, the rest of the aircraft is still relying on specmat, and JSON.

We are aware of the F15 overshiny, and improvements to the patch are in our plans :)

Ok then... This is a blast !!!

After some testing... the thing is really working :D, I mean, Models are ready to embrace PBR shaders already!

As 104th_Fallen said, We can have custom MetalRought maps in our Liveries as soon as DCS loads/finds that "_RougMetal" maps are there. After, we can set up our liveries description.lua to load our custom Rought/Metal/AO maps.

Here an example of description.lua file modified to use PBR custom maps after The "Un-Official RoughMet Patch" has been installed.

Your great mod makes me think; is there a roadmap or some idea if and when those modules get this stuff added by ED by default?

We believe thats ED's plan. The Mig-29 recieved PBR/RoughMet textures as part of its midlife upgrade. We are hopeful that eventually our little patch will not be needed. We will see and know more after the release of the updated Ka50 and A10C models/cockpits/textures.

What is written here is a needless amount of work. ED added a second spec texture in its main texture folder for the Mi-8. With the ending "specm" the "m" could mean texture matt. In order to get rid of the extreme shine you change the spec textures to less shine and copy them into the temptexture folder. (Mi_8_rotors_opa_spec, mi_8_tex_1_spec, mi_8_tex_2_spec, mi_8_tex_4_spec) For all textures that should be matte then you have to enter the description.lua behind insert all .spec an m so .specm.

Not needless, PBR is a far superior method of enacting material changes compared to spec mapping.

I'm glad your enjoying the patch! let us know if we can be of any help!

I am actually going a bit nuts to create some "decent" Ao/Rough/Metal map for Mi-8... Not an expert here but never happy with the 2 specular versions from the default textures, maybe just with the "matte" as the "shiny" is really weird.

Will get in touch if I have some queries or need some help with this "new" PBR maps.

Thanks for the support !:thumbup:

There's AO in the Mi8 Template Already

Open the Template, Turn off all but "Shadow" Layer,

Make a White Background,

Copy Merged

Paste into Red Channel of RoughMet

Is there benefit for applying the shadow layers to the roughmet? My understanding is that baked on shadows and AO were a "bad" thing for roughmet layers. If so we will need to go back through our templates and make some changes :)

if you excluded the AO channel, then the baked on shadows will look off.

I see also Mi-8 has its own AO map inside the original zip but only for one of the textures.

I am aware of the workflow thanks to your great post/tutorial of PBR.

I have a question here, hope you could give me some gidelines:

Trying to load a custom normal map (SU39-PAINT3-DEF-01_NM.dds) in Su-25T model:

livery = {
{"fuz-tail & fin", 0, "SU39-PAINT3-DEF-01", true},
{"fuz-tail & fin", 1, "SU39-PAINT3-DEF-01_NM", false},
}
name = "HR Standard"

countries = {
"RUS",
}

Unfortunately does not seem to work. Does this mean that if the model has not been prepared by ED to load a Normal map, it wont load it the way for example they load RoughMet maps? Is there any other work around to make this happen, or am I doing anything wrong?

Thanks!
