I've had to modify a number of missions now myself for that reason. Also pay careful attention to fuel and stores weight and whether tankers are placed appropriately. It's been a good excuse to set up some more interesting weather too. But I am digressing.

This latest patch has been something of a challenge for me in the pattern. When it came out, I had been spending a lot of time with the HUD off and found it a little easier to stay on-speed. I became a bit lazy over the next few days and started to leave my HUD on. Worse than that, I trusted it without question. So it took me quite some time to understand why I was suddenly starting to struggle with my Case 1 recoveries.

Tonight I worked out what was happening. My HUD is a few degrees off for elevation when compared with the VDI. That had played havoc with my ability to get the plane's attitude right. Now that I've corrected that issue, things are back to relative normal.

Victory205, apologies if it's been covered before but at what fuel state should I be heading for the tanker normally? I guess it would be context specific and possibly even squadron specific but to me there's not much point in spending my time doing passes with my hook raised if I'm unrealistically light. I'd be very appreciative if you could shed some light on this.

Indeed! Although (and not that it'll make a huge difference) I understand 28kts is the minimum you should have across the deck.

I was struggling for ages with being too short in the groove, when I realised that the ship is only doing 10kts, with a 4kt wind (IIRC).
LOL! ok I get it thanks alot!

The Case I paper by Victory205 uses 20kts wind over deck as an example though...

The Navy's Carqual T45 manual states:

The ship will have a 20-30 kt wind across the deck.

In a follow up to this...

Does anyone know how best to set this up in the mission editor?

What is the relation to carrier and wind directions? Wind straight down the deck or down the angle?

Ideally, you want to minimize the cross wind contributions with respect to the angled runway. Here is an example how to do this automatically using the AIRBOSS script.

Thanks funkyfranky! That video explained it all! Wind down the angle it is!

Have you tried the Tomcat Case I training mission? Following the yellow boxes exactly, I am long in the groove...30 seconds or so.

There has to be an ideal carrier and wind speed for DCS...

Thanks for the write up Victory205 very informative. Coming from the hornet, the F-14 definitely requires a lot more attention to detail and finesse. FBW is quite a crutch, had to unlearn a lot of things. I particularly liked you analogy to formation flying and making constant corrections. I’m used to setting and forgetting, so getting into that mindset was super helpful.

Still working on keeping an energized ball and the proper line up, but it’s getting there. This paper helped me a lot!
