That's because he missed his reciprocal heading by about 15 deg, he was slanted away from the carrier on the downwind.

That's because I took the wind into account. The velocity vector is at roughly 050 before the break and 230 afterwards.

When I switch to AWL to view the ICLS needles as directed, I loose all info on my distance from the boat - at least on the HSI. Is there another place to judge distance from the boat other than sight picture / frigate?

Im guessing that in RL they would not be using ICLS in case 1- providing DME on the HSI from tacan.

But what about in case 3? If you have ICLS on at night how do you know your distance behind the ship?

TACAN distance of the tuned station is still displayed on the Bearing Distance Heading Indicator (BDHI) just over to the right.
Forget about reading tenths of a mile in VR thou lol.

EDIT: Also I see in latest patch notes : Show TACAN info on HSD/ECMD in LDG display mode with AWL/PCD steering mode.

Ahah! Now that's more like it.

I'm following Victory205's advice and trapping without the hud, I was killing myself zooming in on the BDHI to get the distance. My angles and stern distances were always wrong so I had a lot of difficulty getting a decent lateral alignment in the groove. This is way better!

Does this reflect how the real Cat works?

Also I found while on AWL you cannot set the course, you need to be on TACAN, then set the course and after come back to AWL. That works just fine but I guess the devs didn't notice this.

At what point is it best to turn off the HUD...before, during, after the break?

Also, when do we transition from cruise to landing mode on the HUD?

I struggle to trim it good enough, it always wants to go somewhere, and even if I somehow manage to get it close on downwind, in the base turn it goes fast if I dont pull a bit then on the groove you turn against the wind and trim is totally messed up again..

Cruise mode is useless. If not in combat, use Landing Mode. Turn the HUD brightness down, or use the Red filter if you are going to use it for the break. Don't need to turn it off, just way down. Leaving it on and dim provide a back up if the VDI fails. The CRT's would overheat and go black on occasion, mostly during shipboard operations.

It is good to practice flying using the peanut gyro and BDHI. You thought that flying without a HUD was bad? Try it without the VDI.
