It's Intel ! I wouldn't bet on that.

As more and more X299 board tests are published, they have one common base line message to tell:

 

STAY AWAY ! softly written between the lines on some or quite openly said on others.

 

Not ripe, TOO HOT, P-State issues, up to 460W CPU Power draw ( Oh LORD ! ) etc etc.

 

Not one review from trusted sites says: GO AND BUY IT, rather other way round, stay away and wait.

That 1800X came out lower than what other reviewers are getting in the benchmarks, my 1700X scores 159 on cinebench single thread with 3850Mhz clock for example, I have no idea why a 1800x capable of 4.1 Ghz XFR was as low as 155.

RAM: 32 GB 4266Mhz (two 2x8 kits) of trident Z RGB @3600Mhz CL 14 CR=1T

MOBO: ASUS CROSSHAIR HERO VI AM4

GFX: GTX 1080Ti MSI Gaming X

Cooler: NXZT Kraken X62 280mm AIO

Storage: Samsung 960 EVO 1TB M.2+6GB WD 6Gb red

HOTAS: Thrustmaster Warthog + CH pro pedals

Monitor: Gigabyte AORUS AD27QD Freesync HDR400 1440P

I don't know, but I assume the tests were made with plain not OC'ed CPU.

For that little extra speed I wouldnt pay 180€ more. its roughly 650,- vs. 470,-€

 

180,-€ is either a nice motherboard or some nice memory sticks for free.

 

Even if they were identical in price and performance I would buy Team Green, just to wave at Intel and thank you for years of rippin'meOFF :P

This makes for some very sober viewing. It appears that overclocking on the X299 chipset requires some pretty serious cooling if not a custom water loop coupled with good case airflow. This video I viewed a few days ago concludes similar:

This is a very kind conclusion.

 

No "air flow in the case" cools your motherboard's rear side, and even IF, the problem remains that the the current and ampere is too much for those parts involved. Too few for too high load.

 

I, by nature and by the function I have in business, are used AND forced to call the child by it's name. I call this X299 with a single 8-Pin CPU power plug a failure by design and must be avoided.

 

+100°C and more on the VRM's and MosFets is surely a game breaker. Not even the best japanese parts will take this for very long if you overclock.

 

Even if there were TWO 8-Pin plugs it wont look that much better. The CPU power draw is abnormal and the stress on the VRM and MosFet parts will likely not get better just because it is fed by 2 cables. Unless they add more VRMs and MosFets to distribute the load it is false fixing or "Augenwischerei" as we say in german.

 

1kw+ PSU will have a good reason to exist for those boards and CPU`s.

 

 

It needs a WS class motherboard, they usually have 2 8-Pins ( my X99 has ), a HIGH END cooling solution for the CPU and some brave heart to go for it.

 

This round, Intel screwed up badly imho.

 

I am pretty confident those boards will soon get a revision "2" layout. Not the first time things had to be changed to fix serious iussues that keep people back buying.

 

Fourhundredandsixtyfour Watts...write that on your monitor and think twice. I am unaware of any CPU water block that can take that much heat away, not with the TIM Intel uses.

Some top of the line X299 mobo already have 2x8pin:

-Gigabyte AORUS 7 & 9

-ASUS ROG Rampage VI Apex

-EVGA X299 DARK

New MSI and Asrock mobo will follow in Q4/17.

 

Yes, the room for OC is little(maybe with delidding you can bypass that limit), but...you have plenty of lanes available, fastest RAM support on the market... so we should ask: Is overclock really needed?
