Missing RWR information for some ships, SAMs

Recommended Posts

On aircraft which can distinguish specific RWR returns (A-10A, 10C, F/A-18, AV-8B, F-15C, M2000C, F-5E, etc), several naval vessels are missing the relevant RWR information and display as an unknown (U or UK) These include:

Type 052B

Type 052C

Type 054A

LHA-1 Tarawa

CVN-74 John C. Stennis

Also affected is the MPQ-55 CWAR radar for the Hawk

You can fix this by editing your local RWR file, easy fix that takes about a minute of work. :)

I can agree for adding Tarawa.

Stennis was commissioned in 1995, so maybe something typical for Nimitz Class should be used (or not, depending on the radar).

Types 052B, 052C, 054A are all from beyond 2000s so should definitely stay as Unknown in our F-15C and A-10A software. I doubt the new ships use old search radars.

They're database entries in a piece of software ... there's little reason for them not to be there. Our eagles aren't exactly pre-95 eagles, not with the 120C onboard.

This is a good finding :thumbup:

I put in the air F-15C Vs Type 52B and Type 54A to find out how ED identified them.

But I got “U” symbol too :cry:

Secondly, the ships radar system modelling really isn’t up to the task now that ED is pushing Navy fighters with SEAD capacity...

Ships have multiple radar systems, typically you can find long range 2D search radar in low band, 3D air search and acquisition radar, and fire control radar to guide SAM missile, often in SARH mode for the ships we have in DCS World.

You can add specific FCR for main gun and or CIWS.

For Russian ships, you more or less have the same SAM systems than land SAM.

Chinese ship follow the same trend.

Type 52B have Tope Plate 3D air search and acquisition radar, and 4 Front Dome FCR to guide 9M317 missiles (similar to Buk-M2 SA-17 land SAM).

You also have a radar for 100mm main gun + 2 CIWS with own radar.

But in DCS we only get one RWR symbol. For instance VS Oliver H. Perry ship you get “49” and that’s all.

Well the SPS-49, Top Plate, AEGIS, Dragon Eye, etc are the primary things to worry about as a pilot. Besides, I'll take one only for the sake of keeping clutter down

Location would help good sir! You assume that I know what I'm doing!!

The fact of the matter is that the user shouldn't have to fix it themselves though :/

Edit: found it I think: Scripts/Aircraft/Common/Cockpit/AN_ALR_symbolsbase.lua

No, as a pilot the search radar gives you a warning, what should worry you is the fire control radar.

Top Plate radar far out range the missile's range. (Around 200km for Top Plate)

It works very well with land SAM in DCS, it's over-simplified with ships.

And FCR aren't supposed to shine before you're in range.

(All aircraft) MIssing RWR information for some ships

Type 052B

Type 052C

Type 054A

LHA-1 Tarawa

CVN-74 John C. Stennis

Recommended fix: add the following lines to the ALR Reference file

game folder\DCSWorld\Scripts\Aircrafts\_Common\Cockpit\AN_ALR_SymbolsBase.lua

I know at least the Mirage references a different file. If there are others, please make sure all RWR reference files are modified!

symbols_strings = {

['052B'] = 'TP', (uses a variant of the Top Plate 3D air search radar)

['052C'] = 'DE', (uses Type 346 APAR, reporting name "Dragon Eye")

['054A'] = 'TP', (also uses a variant of Top Plate)

['Stennis'] = '48', (AN/SPS-48 )

['LHA_Tarawa'] = '48', (AN/SPS-48 )

I tested this exact series of lines in-game and found them to accurately and cleanly add the respective RWR returns to the aircraft I tested: F-15C, F-5E

M-2000C failed; it references a different RWR definitions file that I do not know how to access and test. I am also limited in my ability to access and test for other aircraft

Note: This may also apply to several radars for ELINT purposes on the Su-25T, some of which may not be present here

Well each individual unit is restricted to one RWR definition, so..... :shrug:

I managed to do a fix for ALR-derived RWRs. I'm not sure how the Mirage's file is formatted (since I have no freaking clue where it is) but here's the lines I added to the general file:

['052B'] = 'TP', (uses a variant of the Top Plate 3D air search radar)

['052C'] = 'DE', (uses Type 346 APAR, reporting name "Dragon Eye")

['054A'] = 'TP', (also uses a variant of Top Plate)

['Stennis'] = '48', (AN/SPS-48 )

['LHA_Tarawa'] = '48', (AN/SPS-48 )

Even if DCS has general limitations on RWRs and radars etc with regards to ships, it's at least nice to know what's going to save you or give you a bad day

Ignore the Hawk CWAR, that was added and I was relying on my memory

I almost never see Dog Ears being used though. One of the biggest advantages of the Strela-10 system is that it is entirely IR-based. Besides, given that one is a relatively low-power TAR for Strelas and one is a massively overpowered APAR all-in-one combat system, it's not likely they'll get mixed up by the player in my opinion

You know what they say about butts and opinions, though :music_whistling:

As a side note, an Arleigh Burke-class Destroyer (Flight IIA bodge with the 64 cal gun and two CIWS) is supposed to be coming to DCS in the near future. Haven't heard a word since September though. It'll be nice for Blufor to have a properly-sized flight deck for Helis, not to mention the extensive combat capabilities, particularly for air defense and anti-ship.

I tend to agree for Dog Ear, but it is listed as DE in M-2000C manual.

And DCS being DCS, somebody will notice and complain about the ambiguity.:music_whistling:
