Printing out a briefing in a mission

Recommended Posts

I have downloaded a campaign and the first mission has a lot of needed info. However, I cannot seem to copy the briefing in order to paste it to notepad and print it out.

I unzipped the mission, but still could not locate the written briefing. Is there any way to do this? I also tried to copy the briefing in the mission editor, but no joy either.

Tried the same with that mission, something wierd with it, most likely that the info in the mission briefings exceeds some sort of limit, there is quite a lot.

MizEdit v1.14.3 will not load the original at all, and if I resave it on my system using DCS v2.5.5 or v2.6.0 then MizEdit complains that it "Might be an old mission file" and to please resave with the DCS Mission Editor.

Not sure if campaign is a bought commerical one and may be copy protected, I would say it is as when missions is resaved as copy and I look at the mission text, it isn't all there, larger size but not headed with the correct stuff.

Exported Text of mission briefing using copy and paste in ME.

FA-18C Battle Group Delta - 1

[sITUATION]

July 4, 1990, 05:55:

Battle Group Delta, centered on the aircraft carrier USS Independence, has arrived in the Arabian Sea at the entrance to the Gulf of Oman. After US demands to release the crew of the sunken USS Reid from captivity have been left unanswered by Iran, United States President George H. W. Bush has ordered initiation of hostilities against the Islamic Republic. US forces are to strike military and economic targets in southern Iran aimed at degrading Iranian military capabilities in the Strait of Hormuz and cutting off Iranian income from oil exports, applying increasing pressure on the regime in Tehran. The strikes are to continue until all US prisoners have been released by Iran.

USS Independence carries the aircraft of Carrier Air Wing 14 consisting of the following squadrons: Two Fighter Squadrons with F-14A Tomcat from VF-154 “Black Knights” and VF-21 “Freelancers”, two Strike Fighter Squadrons with brand new F/A-18C Hornet multi-role fighters from VFA-113 “Stingers” and VFA-25 “Fist of the Fleet” and one Attack Squadron with A-6E Intruder from VA-196 “Main Battery” for all weather day and night strike. These are supported by E-2C Hawkeye from VAW-113 “Black Eagles”, EA-6B Prowler from VAQ-139 “Cougars”, S-3A Viking from VS-37 “Sawbucks” and SH-3H Sea King from HS-8 “Eightballers”. You are assigned to VFA-113 “Stingers” flying F/A-18C Hornet.

Air defense of southern Iran is provided by the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force. A squadron of MiG-29 Fulcrum has been identified at Bandar Abbas AB to defend the vital Strait of Hormuz area. These are half of the 24 brand new fighters recently delivered by the Soviet Union. The other squadron is based near Tehran and intelligence considers it unlikely that these will be transferred away from the capital. The IRIAF`s highly capable F-14A Tomcat fleet is still marginally available after heavy use in the recent Iran-Iraq war. A squadron is apparently based at Shiraz AB for defense of southern Iran but availability is considered low due to the type`s maintenance intensity. IRIAF`s remaining operational Tomcats are kept near Tehran. The backbone of the IRIAF remains the F-4E Phantom and F-5E Tiger, with reinforcements of these types from other parts of the country considered likely in case of hostilities.

Key areas are covered by Hawk and SA-2 SAM sites of the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Defense Force. In addition, high value targets are covered by Rapier short-range SAM and lethal radar directed 35 mm anti-aircraft artillery. AAA and MANPADS are to be expected in large quantities below 10`000 ft. Due to the volume of low-altitude air defense, CAW-14 has decided to employ medium-altitude strike package tactics with fighter and SEAD support. Aircrews are advised to attack ground targets from the highest altitude possible that ensures sufficient bomb accuracy and employ preemptive flares in large quantities.

The Islamic Republic of Iran Navy has been identified in the port of Bandar Abbas for the most part, with only a few frigates and fast attack craft at sea. The Strait of Hormuz is heavily defended by multiple HY-2 Silkworm SSM batteries. As the threat of SSM and warships is degraded, Battle Group Delta will be able to progressively move deeper into the Gulf of Oman in order to shorten aircraft transit distances and facilitate striking deep targets. Though because of the imminent threat of naval mines, Battle Group Delta is not anticipated to actually enter the Strait of Hormuz.

I have dropped Uboats a note about this issue with MizEdit so he can look into the errors generated.

Other wise to get mission info:

  1. Load mission into ME
  2. Go down the icons on the LEFT hand side to just under "MIS" text and left click on the small looking "piece of paper" icon.
  3. The SORTIE, SITUATIONS, RED and BLUE Tasks boxes should now appear on the RIGHT hand side.
  4. Left click on the box of text you wish to copy, then "Cntrl-A" to mark all text followed by "Cntrl-C" to copy it to the clipboard.
  5. "ALT-TAB" out of DCS to windows desktop and create and open a new text file to put the text into, Left click in the open text file and then hold "Cntrl-V" to paste the text from the clipboard.
  6. Add a couple of new lines with the "Enter" key.
  7. ALT-TAB back to DCS ME and rinse a repeat for the other boxes of text you require.
  8. Once finished copying text don't forget to save the text file.
  9. Done.

Regards, Ian.

Thanks for all your help. That was a big briefing.

For large Briefings, the Mission designer could have placed it onto a Kneeboard file embeded onto the MIZ file ... that is a much better alternative and it doesn't require too much work: I write the Briefing in a Word Processor, then save as PDF and use the Kneeboard Builder utility to embed it onto the MIZ file.

Once on the mission, it looks like this:

Thanks for all your help. That was a big briefing.

Your most welcome, yes that mission was indeed done differently, the briefing texts have been directly injected into the mission file inside the .miz archive and not linked via a dictionary key to the dictionary file where the actual text should be (Doesn't conform to the New mission format since DCS v1.5 onwards), this has caused the issue with MizEdit not loading the mission in and also means you can't change any of that briefing text in the ME of DCS 2.5.x and have the resaves save it.

UBOAT has updated MizEdit to 1.15 so that it reports it as an "Older mission and for you to resave with DCS ME" instead of erroring, however resaving this mission will not fix the issue with all the briefing texts.

Only way to fix this mission it to manual change the mission file sections and removed the texts and put the links to point to the dictionary and updated the dictionary file with the text from the mission file sections, if you try to change any of the briefing text in the mission at ME it will not save those changes until the dictionary link is corrected as I did.

Rudel_Chw system of doing this is much more professional and neat setup.
