Shark-Bait
I plan to download some WW2 decals and pin-ups (the types put on WW2 fighters). May be useful to anyone interested in customizing their P-51 skin. Will be beautifying and tweaking in Photoshop (cut out / colour / etc.) Dunno how much interest there is in this type of thing. Post a quick message if you want me to continue or if you have any constructive input. :) All transparent backgrounds (PNG) #1 Decal 01 - 800x2000px - 0.8MB (Attached) #2 Decal 02 - 300x900px - 0.2MB #3 "Tail Wind" - 1000x2000px - 1.06 MB #4 "Thar She Blows" - 1180x2000 - 1.64 MB ______________________________________________________________________ #5 Nose Art from the plane of legendary P-51 pilot, John C. Meyer. I plan to create all the decals for John C. Meyer's "Petie 2nd" P-51. I'll see about attaching them to the same post, linked above. ver2: 2000x1836 - 0.4MB + PDF attached to post. This version has more authentic colors. P51:1127x250 - 30 KB + PDF attached to post. Side 1:630x250 - 7 KB + PDF attached to post. Shark-Bait
Small decal 300x900. It's smaller but I think it's cool so I removed most of the noise (half-tone lines, pixels etc.) Edited May 24, 2012 by Shark-Bait

Shark-Bait
Cool! By decals, hopefully you don't mean commercial products subject to copyright. (;)) Otherwise... awesome! Maybe they were a 'commercial product' 70 years ago, I dunno. Since they're not in any shops nor even the editors of the book could contact all the 'possible' copyright holders of the images, and the book was published over a decade ago ? Quote: "The editors have made every effort to contact the present owners of any copyright material. Our apologies to those who hold such rights but whom we failed to contact because ownership was unknown or addresses were incomplete. Appropriate credit will be given in future editions if such copyright holders contact the publisher." Now, ... since even the editors have admitted that and I don't know what they have or may have permission for.. or not as it would appear.. I am not going to put "copyright so and so" because that would be making a statement that the people who printed the book have the original copyright... something which I cannot verify and by their own admittance they can't either ! There is also the reality of FAIR USE and the historical relevance of these works. the USAF is the largest holder of the decals and their photographs. Since no shop holds these and I am not selling them and no-one is losing money from sharing of the works... well... Where exactly is the loss to be complaining about 'copyright' ? I will however post a link to the Amazon webpage for the book, in case someone does have an interest and wants to buy it... and I'll send the publisher a bill for the professional advertisement. . . . . . . o.O . . . . . . . . . . . . Is that okay ? Edited May 26, 2012 by Shark-Bait
aaron886
I'm sure you're fine! I was mostly just teasing. That's old stuff, and although it may still be under copyright, I don't think anything you are uploading would see use in violation of copyright law. Doooit! -Rudel-
Technically the military has no copyrights on it's official media, but still has a protection similar to trademarks. And because these beauties were painted on by the crew or pilot, I highly doubt they were copyrighted anyways. 50-70 years ago? aaron886
Does not mean that some of the pieces are not now owned by other entities, besides which, the photos taken of those decals would belong to the photographer. (Hence why the author attempted to give credit where possible.)

And because these beauties were painted on by the crew or pilot, I highly doubt they were copyrighted anyways. 50-70 years ago? Good to know ;) The art on the aircraft were inspired by the pin-up girls of the time, and maybe some celebrities / fantasies. Same as nowadays xD One of the main artists was a guy called Gil Elvgren (1914-1980) Does not mean that some of the pieces are not now owned by other entities, besides which, the photos taken of those decals would belong to the photographer. Again if you wish to go down that legalese route, you'd better show there was some kind of loss to justify a charge of loss or damage to value and the court's time ? Considering how popular his (and other) art was, and how it was copied often and much I think you'd have an extremely hard time justifying wasting a Court's time. Following your logic, someone could "copyright" their name. Fortunately, Justice has more common sense than to just be a boot stamping on Man's face. Even a commercial entity, making profit wasn't too concerned about the printing. A photographer ? Taking a picture of someone else's "copyrighted" work ? Does that mean I can take a picture of New York and claim that every tourist ows me money for taking another? Just drop the subject, please start another thread if you want to continue with your train of thought. Edited May 26, 2012 by Shark-Bait

Take it easy. I'll leave your thread alone! Thank you for your concern, aaron886. I was up all night, clicking away on Photoshop and didn't get any sleep. I appreciate you commenting, it's just I find the whole thing about jumping because someone might say boo a little tiring. I do appreciate what you are saying though and will try and be as careful as possible. I hope that anyone who wants to add some cool decals to their P-51 Mustang will be able to use these. It takes literally hours to find an image, clear the digital and other noise, sharpen, tone, colour tweaking, cropping, masking... it's pretty laborious, but .. if even a few can enjoy the result. I think it's worth it. I will be making some vectors of the Allies and other WW2 decals and will upload them as PDF or some sort of vector. Plan to anyway. After doing a bit of research, there's so many decals for the Su-25, the Ka-50, A-10 and other aircraft. When they are readily available like this, with no background it saves anyone who wants to add to their plane texture a huge amount of time.I hope that ED will make it so that the decals can be added as separate textures "over" the normal aircraft game textures in multiplayer... this wouldn't overload any servers as the decals can be quite small, <512KB. It'd be straightforward to program, and it'd allow Clans and other groups to be able to play online and for others to recognise the squadrons based on markings / decals. I can hope anyway. Shark-Bait
A Legend's Nose Art This artwork I re-created in Illustrator, every single curve and line is hand clicked with a mouse... so I'm hoping that the 'issue' of copyright will not rear it's ugly head. If there isn't any issue with using this recreation, I give full permission for MY work to be used in any way shape or form on any DCS Game and Xplane... If anyone even tries and use this work for anything else ? Click the "Show" button. Shark-Bait
"Thar She Blows" 1942 This will be probably the last "pin-up" I upload. Kind of lost my enthusiasm after all the moaning about "copyright" and what-not. It takes quite a lot of work to go from to -> you'd nearly need a degree in image forensics to find the detail in all that pixel noise. :P Anyway, "Thar She Blows" 1942. I hope that ED make it so that rather than have to modify the entire "skin" texture, they have dedicated 'sections' where decals can be added easily. Nose, side of cockpit, kill tags etc, pilot name, serial no., etc. They could then have "dedicated" masks that the game loads, so that the bumb maps and all that from rivets and other texture markings will still show through. <base texture> [<%user%-decal_1> <default mask_1>] [<%user%-decal_2> <default mask_2>] End result, A-10 with decals and all rivets and other details showing. And the server could synchronise all the custom user decals... it'd take seconds if every user had an array of them all cached locally. :< I can hope. It'd be awesome.
