Screen / Monitor advice please

Recommended Posts

Hi all

I've just done a hardware upgrade, MB, RAM, CPU and SSD's. I kept my old GTX980, and my screen. My screen is pretty old.... Circa 2012 or something like that. It's a syncmaster T260, and by my measurement a 25" screen. Its a 16:10 and I run DCS on 1920x1200 60FPS. It says on the frame, 5ms and 20000:1 dynamic contrast. None of this really makes sense to me. I understand the resolution and thats about it. I do have difficulty identifying ground targets without labels or smoke, even when I'm really close.

Is this something a new screen could help with. Was thinking a 27" 1440p. Would my 980 be able to handle it? Do TN screens work well with DCS?

Any other advice would be greatly appreciated

It will struggle at 1440P

I went with a 1070 first and it was quite good with med to high settings.

My screen is a little older / expensive screen, it's still a TN panel, that's why it's got a 1ms response time, still works very well, not sure what I will get next tho.....

For DCS the sweet spot now is still around the 2070 super with 8GB GDDR6, that would be good for 1440P or VR. I'm holding out as I went for the 1080ti a year and a half ago. The only card that can just beat it is the 2080ti and that's way to many $$$. The 1080ti really end up a good buy for last gen.

Also, do you have Trackir? This can really help and you can also setup zoom in and out controls on you hotas.

You can see it here in my trackir vid.

I would advise that you go for a 2080 super for anything above 2k resolution if you're wanting to set graphics to high or ultra. I suspect your current GTX 980 would be the bottleneck if you were to go for 1440p, although I don't know what CPU and memory you are running... For VR you would definitely need a 2080 super with DCS, this also wouldn't make it any easier to spot targets.

TN screens would work well in DCS as the have fast response times, the colour definition and viewing angle range is less although this shouldn't bother you that much.

Spotting targets in DCS is hard, full stop. Basically the larger the pixels are, the greater chance you have of spotting a target. If you're running at 2k for instance and you have a 52" screen, it will be easier to spot than running 2K on a 32" screen.

EDIT, So I have a 2080, an i5 9600k clocked at 5Ghz and 32 Gb DDR 4 memory and cannot maintain 60fps running at 4K, my GPU is maxed out indicating the RTX 2080 is still the bottleneck.

I just picked up this monitor for my new build which I'll run with a 2080super

AORUS AD27QD 27" 144Hz 1440P FreeSync and G-SYNC Compatible Gaming Monitor Exclusive Built-in ANC 2560x1440 QHD Display HDR 1ms Response time 10-Bit IPS 95% DCI-P3 Display Port 2 x HDMI 2 x USB 3.0 https://m.newegg.com/product/N82E16824012006?m_ver=1

IPS, 1ms response time, 144hz, and rated for both gsync and free sync.

Cant comment on performance since all my parts are still in their boxes and yet to be assembled.

Hi guys

Thanks for the advice. unfortunately a GPU upgrade is definitely not possible right now as well as a screen.

So the question is now....... probably a really stupid one at that..... but...

Would I get ANY benefit from buying a newer monitor, 27" or bigger 60hz in 16:9 and downgrading to 1080 instead of my current 1200? (16:10).

IMHO, getting a bigger monitor with a lower resolution would never be beneficial, even more so for DCS where you need a decent DPI for cockpits.

Since you don't replace monitors every day, I'd definitely get a 27" (not sure if that resolution is acceptable for you on the 32" one) 1440p monitor (and I'd aim for more than 60Hz if financially possible) for your 980 and adjust the DCS detail level if necessary (though I'd expect it should handle it fine on high details for up to 60 FPS).

Then later when you upgrade the GPU, you'll be all set to enjoy DCS in higher FPS and decent resolution, rather than needing to buy a higher resolution monitor as well.

Annoyed by my posts? Please consider donating. Once the target sum is reached, I'll be off to somewhere nice I promise not to post from. I'd buy that for a dollar!

If you can, get a large ultrawide 1440p. Went from a 27" 144hz gsync panel to a 1440p 60hz 34" ultrawide, and it's so much better to fly with. Even better is an ultrawide high refresh rate one, but holy moly they're expensive.
