Q&A Spitfire Mk XIV

Recommended Posts

Hullo just a quick question is the gunsight going to be a gyroscope version?

From the images it looks like it is not, however the throttle appears to have the range adjustment control?

No the default will not be the GGS.

We may retro fit the XIV with the GGS when it is developed for the Meteor later on. But the initial release will not have GGS

Okay thanks for the quick reply.

P.S. I sent you a PM the other day, did you see it?

I have replied now, I get so many messages along lines of "are you making this?" "Will you do that" etc that I don't go through them very often so apologies for missing that one.

Hey Pman,

do you have a status update about the Spitfire release? I thought, you wanted to release it end of 2016.

They did, based on assumption that P-40 would be out much earlier. But as that one got pushed back, and, based on recent updates they're in "all hands on deck" mode for the Warhawk, I wouldn't expect anything beyond very vague status updates for the Spit. I'm waiting in anticipation, though!

I have the IX. Was hoping for 15 instead of 21. I hope the XIV is a meaner bird. I just don't get why the Stang and Spit are under powered. "Data, data..." Is it really that simple?

It'll be interesting to see if the P-47 comes out under-powered.

I pre-purchased the P-40. Interested in the XIV. Wondering if either will suffer castration at the hands of ED.....

Hey Hunter, it is not "castrated" the IX was quite slow by the end of the war, the XIV was just as fast as the latest 109 and even faster with +21 Boost. The P-51 can catch the 109 and will becoming even faster soon with the ETO upgrade.

Please don't blame ED for modelling the aircraft correctly!

We just need a Bf 109 Gustav :)

I really hope the XIV is out this year, it will be a fearsome aircraft.

Huh, I didn't know the P-40 went on pre-sale! I just went to their site and looked and see it listed as being a pre-sale but there is no option to purchase it. :( Guess I missed that window. Hopefully it will be out soon!

Yeah, you're only a couple of years late on that one. I promise they won't sell out when it goes back on sale, you will be able to get one then.

Maybe that was too strong of a word. I'm aware that there were two options considered, early on.... the 21 and 25. Knowing that the Allied community really hoped for the 25, they went with the 21. Data availability. Just wondering if the 25 option really was so difficult to produce.

Whatever. We have what we have.

Yeah, I can catch a 109 if the conditions are favorable.... a dive with a lightened plane. lol

Yeah, it was while ago. So long I have to take a guy's word that is was in 2015??? I've resigned myself to just hanging back. It'll show up. Sometime. But I won't be pre-purchasing again.

We don't pick aircraft according to their combat capability.

I chose the 21lbs variant earlier on in the aircrafts development cycle.

We have information on both settings although neither of which is used on real aircraft these days.

Our MkXiv will be 21lbs of boost :)

Just out of interest Pman, do you know what boost TFC let their spit be pushed to?

It isn't especially high, we have spoken about 12lbs before when I have been there. I am not sure what the current upper limit was set to but they rarely run above 8lbs

Is +21lb Boost is set in stone (You appear adamant)?

The only reason I ask is that from discussions on 150 grade fuel it seems that for aircraft operating from the continent from D-Day to February were operating 100 grade.

It also sounds like XIV only used +21lb from ~July until they moved to the continent starting around September onward.

January to July - 100 Grade +18lb

July to September - 150 Grade +21lb (Anti Diver and Escort Missions)

September - to December - 100/150 Grade as Squadrons moved from ADGB to 2TAF.

December to February - 100 Grade +21lb

February to May - 150 Grade +21lb

In truth I am not sure how accurate the above is, I am just wondering how you chaps came to decide on ~21lb.

Krupi

Yes 21lbs is pretty much set in stone.

At the moment we have about 150 grade fuel but we have not refined it to either spec, but I am more leaning towards 150 as we have more reliable data for it.

Ah I see, interesting!

It is a shame I would have preferred the +18lb option myself, however if you can make a more realistic +21lb then so be it and I suppose if it is anything like the Mk IX then you will have to manage high boosts with a lot of caution anyway XD

Thanks for the quick reply Pman

Very happy to see 21lbs boost :) Marvelous!

Rolls Royce Griffin power, go, go, go  Great tribute to British engineering and the pilots and RAF ground staff that supported the war effort and the technological race for air supremacy.

Good luck with all of your aircraft projects. Really looking forward to flying VEAO WWII/Korea era models :joystick: Thanks very much.

Happy landings,

I would love to see the 150 fuel, myself. I'll deal with the engine management issues. Since the K4 didn't arrive till somewhere around October, I believe, I have no issues with the fuel availability. Some will argue, but hey, whatever....
