Q&A Spitfire Mk XIV

Welcome to the Questions and Answers thread for the VEAO Supermarine Spitfire MK XIV.

 

In this thread feel free to ask any questions you have regarding this module and myself and the rest of the VEAO team will do our best to answer them as best we can.

 

To cover a few commonly asked questions from the warbirds thread :

 

• No ETA yet

• The Spitfire as with the other modules will be EFM to PFM standards

• Full ASM

• We will be doing the low back version with clipped wings.

 

If you guys have any questions for us then this is the place for you!

 

I can’t promise that we will answer all of them (usual NDA stuff applies etc etc) but we will certainly try!

 

Keep an eye out for the Eye Candy thread and the Dev Diary not only for this aircraft but for the other warbirds as well!

yeah but clipped versions of the C and E wings existed, the difference is internal structure support for different armaments.

 

A final decision has yet to be made on this. The actual structural support is the same just the internal layout is different.

 

It will prob be a E type though.

"Support" in the sense that the E wing "supports" different weapon configurations to the C wing. I don't mean the struts and frames inside the wing.

 

Not wanting to open the high octane and balance can of worms; which fuel will be implemented for the Griffon 61 engine? Or to phrase it another way, what will the maximum manifold pressure be?

At the very least can't we have both?

 

I think only recon versions of the Spit Mk XIV had fully elliptical wings, the clipped wings are for reducing induced drag at low altitudes.

 

I don't know about you but I don't have the patience to climb to 30,000 feet for a fight. I'm alright down low with my clipped wings.

 

The flight characteristics of the same model of spitfire with both types of wing would be radically different especially at high altitude.

Sadly due to the way that DCS works we cant do too separate models without doing two separate modules. Which is more work and costing then we can do for a standard price DCS module.

The clipped wing variants only really came with the MkV, but your right that alot of the high altitude fighters not only had the full tips but in some cases actually had extended ones!

I thought wing clipping of XIVs as standard was mostly post war when the remaining ones were to be used for ground attack duty? I know some squadrons did their own field mods before that.

 

Clipping does make the turn rate worse I think.

Could be a stupid idea, but since DCS models drag, mass etc of external stores could it be possible to make the wingtips "stores" so you can get both variants without the need to do another module but still altering the flight model? Could also be used for changing between C and E. since you can have gunpods on things like the SU25... why not internal "gunpods" on the spit XIV? ;)

I would agree to have the eliptical wing variant! It is the most "iconic" visual feature that shouts "SPITFIRE" in your face.

If not both wing models, why not the way it was intended as a high altitude interceptor to bring down bombers and their escort?

I was going to suggest something like Belsimteks UH-1H slick version toggle in the editor.

I looked at that way of doing it and sadly it won't work for us doing it like that, not at the moment anyway.

 

I'll look into the weaponary idea as I that one may be viable.

The Spitfire was designed as a short range, high performance fighter, it's origins date back from point defence.

 

Some of the later marks had pressurised cockpits et al for high altitude work but it was by no means designed as that from day one.

 

Clipped wings were more common on MkXIV's then elliptical ones, plus us having access to several clipped wing spitfires helps us with the production process.

Not in my experience. Variants are definitely possible.

 

My own question: do you have someone lined up to do your flight modeling, or not yet?

We actually have several positions open, anyone interested should drop me a pm.

 

As for alternative variants it's our intention to do one variant. The low back with clipped wings. Anything above that we can consider pending data, cost and time frames
