Gaming Laptop? Around 1-1,5k EUR for DCS?

Recommended Posts

Hello simmers,

well damn... I need some help... mobility will be a factor soon in my life. I never liked laptops, maybe I'm afraid of lots of weaknesses, the price, ...,...,... -> I'm looking for a gaming laptop for around 1k€.

I heard, that even high-end non-laptop rigs have problems with DCS, right? Especially with VR.

Any recommendations? I'm completely lost in the jungle... there are tradeoffs everywhere.

1,5k€ would be ok too if its worth it (performance etc.)

Thanks in advance for helping souls since mine is lost...

Greetings,

Cabal

Hmm, $1K Euro seems like it could hurt. Again, it depends on the resolution so native resolution is important. If you run 1920x1080 on a native 3000x2000 for example, it just won't look nice.

Alienware 15 R3 part#210-AJSS with SSD, 2400MHz DD4 and 1070 8GB GPU was about $2500 in Dec of 2017.

You will need to make compromises at 1500, as sad as it is.

1070 or 1080 should be in it and a CPU with an HQ ending for Intel, those are the top dog CPUs in laptops

Happy with my Lenovo Y700 Ideapad, they had a sale last year when they came out with the new version. CPU i7-6700HQ is more than enough, but GTX 960m leaves some to be desired, probably need a 10 series for VR. I suggest getting something when a company is coming out with a new version, that way you get a sale, cooling is very important. My Lenovo would melt through the floor if I didn’t turn on the extreme cooling mode.

How about this guy?

https://us-store.acer.com/predators/predator-15-gaming-laptop-g9-593-77wf

But it only has 256 GB SSD, and I don't know if you can upgrade/customize it. Nor if it has an M.2 slot that's open that you can upgrade to SSD/NVMe drive. 256GB is *just* enough for DCS but probably not every map, not every plane. And you don't want to move Windows to the 1TB HDD, I don't think.

One can always sacrifice the 1TB HDD for a 512 SSD.

Most Laptops nowadays do have a M2 slot, either Sata or PCIe based.

Look the manual, it'll tell

Is the GTX 1070 really strong enough for DCS?

So the Acer Predator from the link is ok or really/almost "high-end"?

Too bad the laptops incl. a 1080 are too damn high.

At the laptops 1920 x 1080 DCS would be fine, even at 1440P could be OK for a laptop. I had a 1070 on PC and it was good and they do come with a HDMI and DisplayPort, so you could plug in a 1440P screen when not mobile.

The laptop only has a limited number of planes and terrains. I tried it in Caucuses with the latest Nvidia and OpenBeta (updated today).

The free flight was around 70'ish with HIGH preset. Normandy seemed about the same, but for some reason, I couldn't get the FPS counter to come up.

Then I flew the Instant A-G (I think) for the F5. And uploaded the track for you. Everything seemed pretty smooth.

Again, spec of the laptop

Everything has problems with DCS :P As for laptops, they're not any different from a desktop, etc scaled down and more power/heat efficient... Or at least, they can be. That depends on the type of "laptop" you get. Some are more like portable desktops. I had a 17" Sager that weighed about 20lbs, powered by a high end quad core and 680M, it was and probably still is more powerful than a lot of what people are using around here, and it ran just fine ;) It cost about $2000, though, so.... Yeah.

It really depends on your goal. A really powerful gaming laptop can be expected to cost twice what an equivalent desktop would. It's also going to be rather large, heavy, and have a battery life of 30-45 minutes if you're really cranking on it, they're intended to carry to a hotel room or something, plug into the wall and not move it again until you're ready to leave.

But yeah, if you are willing to spend enough and don't mind it being huge, you can get one that will handle DCS. $1000 is pretty barebones though, like I said, you'll be looking more at the $1500-2000 range (as I understand it Euros are only slightly more valuable than dollars atm so that should still be appropriate estimates)

  • 3 weeks later...

Hello guys,

thanks everyone for participation in this thread.

Let's say, I got to happen 2000 Euro (+/- 200), how do my targets look now? I'm still not that convinced but well... there is no way around one. Still feeling like in a jungle with no visibility.

Any recommendations (incl. experience) for laptops around 2000 Euro (+/- 200)?

Note: The battery won't matter too much because it will be cabled probably most if not at all times

Thank you in advance and for the help!

Cabal

Whichever one you choose, getting the extra Warranty Card and Service with PickUp&Return pays for itself.

I have had many different gaming laptops and all of them had the extra warranty extension etc.. Tell you, each one had at least one incident that payed for that extra.

My favourite picks are either Dell or Asus. Dell has FAR better service but comes at a much higher price then Asus does. Asus has a "not so good" service, even with all the extra services purchased, mind that. There is not much you can repair yourself if they go "kaputt".

You need a FAST Intel HQ CPU and a 1080 card, 32GB and 1 or 2 SSD's coupled with a nice "Gsynced" screen if possible. 2k€ should be enough to get all that.
