As an interim, you can use GME to copy the files back after an update. It does get tiring, doesn't? Details were posted just a few days ago in the parent thread Input and Output. Doesn't answer your question, but in the mean time it may help. I also used symbolic link to maintain one copy of the controls. Here's a three min video in case you don't know how to use symbolic links. Of course, assuming you have 1.x and 2.x branches installed ;)
