SA-342M Gazelle vs. BO-105 PAH1A1

I'm really loving what Polychop are doing from everything I've seen so far. I absolutely love the idea of flying a small and nimble helicopter that floats like a butterfly and stings tanks like a bee :)

I don't know much about the Gazelle or BO-105, but would I be right saying that they have a similar role on the battlefield?

What are there differences, and should I be choosing one over the other, and for what reason?

Both use state of the art anti-tank weapons. I think they will be a similar danger to tanks as a KA-50. They don't carry that much ammo though, so a KA-50 is still the better anti tank weapon system.

Both are pretty nimble, the Bo-105 a bit more than the Gazelle IIRC, although it is bigger.

They have very similar weapons and sensor systems (depends a bit on the version).

I think the Bo-105 can carry more unguided rockets (or gun ammo if it has gun pods) so it might be a bit better against infantry or other soft targets.

IIRC the Gazelle has a bit more range.

The Bo-105 is an extremely agile helicopter. As stated before the Red Bull Team owns one and you can find more than a couple of vids showing the aerobatic skills of this machine.

The real deal when it comes to fighting is that trained helicopter pilots needed 3 years of extra education to move these tank killers like they were supposed to do. When an Apache Pilot speaks of NOE flight a German PAH-Driver asks for Oxygen :music_whistling:

They operated at 10 feet AGL with high foward speed to reach their fire zones.

Each of them was only a small sting to the enemy tank formation but since they operated in groups where the helicopters were independent from each other and every helicopter was carrying 6 missiles, they could hit like a swarm of african killer bees on a afternoon tea party :megalol:

That first video pops up every once in a while here in this subforum ... and I just can't get enough of it, lol. That flying ... together with that "80's porno"-style music - just awesome. :o)

I am so looking forward to fly it. I wonder, how agile it will feel ... maybe the Bo compares to the Huey as the Huey compares to the Hip? :o)

Both of those helis are extremely nimble.

Ed Macy calls the Gazelle a "flying sports car" and I was told that some pilots of the Bo-105 describe it as "riding a motorbike through the air".

Bo-105 compared to Huey is even more than Huey compared to Mi-8. Plus it is built differently. The construction allows for more extreme maneuvers.

A look at the numbers:

Bo-105: 840 hp and a typical weight of around 2 tons

Huey: 1400 hp but typically flying around with a weight of around 4 tons.

Mi-8: almost 4000 hp but flying around with a weight of 11 tons. Even empty it is heavier than a Huey and a Bo-105 combined.

AFAIK there is an RWR (pretty sure we could see it in some cockpit pictures already).

Concerning flare dispensers: I know at least some Bo-105 had them, but to be honest I can't find any pictures to prove it on the net.

I am pretty sure (not 100% though) that the Polychop Bo-105 will have flare dispensers. Concerning chaffs I don't know. I would tend to say no.

Gazelle has four HOT missiles and BO-105 has six.

Does the BO have a RWR and countermeasures, too?

RWR:

The BO-105 PAH1A1 have a RWR which is simulated in the module. It shows bars that tells the pilot in length and angle from which direction the radarbeam is scanning the BO. A "wobbling" sound also indicates the strength of the scan. The BO has 4 spiral Antennas which covers 360°

The RWR also have a Missile Alert light.

Flare Dispensers:

There is a korean BO-105 CBS with Flare Dispensers, Gunpod (Mauser) and Rocketpods. When I get info on how these work, I will simulate it also.

RWR and and flares - very cool!

Is it pushing it asking about the gun pod? :)

I don't know how the target acquiring with the gunpod works. Is there a gunsight or does it work it over the sight sytem at the roof...a lot of questions :)

The Bo-105 in the "Nationaal Militair Museum" in Soesterberg has two flare dispensers:

Some more pics on this site:

http://www.ipms.nl/walkarounds/walkaround-helicopters/839-walkaround-bo-105.html

EDIT: Lots of pictures actually. Some very detailed.

But it seems that only a later version had them. The site says:

"Later, some aircraft were modified with kevlar plates and chaff/flare dispensers for UN operations. They are referred to as Bo-105CB4 and also have slightly more powerfull engines."

And from the looks of it I am not sure if those ones are compatible with the HOT or TOW launchers, they might be in the way....

Here's another video about the combat employment of the Bo-105. I posted it already in another thread but it also fits here I think. It's in german, but the video speaks for itself:

Fly low (very low! -> 2:20 in the video) and stay in cover. If in position, pop up very quickly, shoot and gtfo :D

Regarding the targeting system of both helos. What can the viviane of the Sa342m can do better or more than the system in the Bo-105.

I ask because the targeting System of the Bo-105 is just the size of a cake box, whereras the viviane of the Gazelle has the size of a whole oven and both helos were modernized in nearly the same era. So why such a big difference in size, what can the system in the Gazelle do better or more?
