Hippo
Very quick, very initial impressions (FA18C) A step in the right direction, overall a great improvement. Night cockpit I think is much better. Not sure about the light blue stars. Can see the carrier lighting more easily - much better. At Anapa when passing the "searchlight trucks" at the threshold on landing - don't like the effect - maybe just remove the trucks? Need to test, but I'm getting the sinking feeling that frame rates have been negatively impacted. Hippo
Ah - I didn't even realise there was a new option - SSLR. I had it turned off. One thing I noticed was the gear handle light, which had a really cool flickering effect (at least I think it's new - I hadn't noticed it before). Everything is much brighter. I've turned gamma down to 1.5 (from 2.0), which I think works well for night. I think I probably want it higher for daytime. fitness88
Great night lighting with gamma at 1 cities and airfields look great, daytime I'll raise it just a bit but nothing as high as before. Scenery looks better in Caucasus. I believe the clouds have been improved definitely a fps hit for me in the clouds almost 50%. But as per original post...going in the right direction! What are the improvements others are seeing? Edited February 14, 2020 by fitness88
Hippo
On further (very limited) testing, I'd say performance is unchanged from 2.5.5 (I have NOT tried turning on SSLR). fitness88
Did more flying...it's interesting that flying though clouds and bad weather can go un-noticed in fps and the next bunch of similar clouds can cut my fps in half, fortunately I don't see a noticeable impact on game play when that happens. On another subject, is it possible dynamic weather has been worked on, looks better. So far I'm inclined to agree with Hippo...haven't flown MP yet. Hippo
Using Rift S I'm liking gamma = 1.5 at night, 2.0 by day. No particular reasoning, just gut feel. Should there be a "correct" value for Rift S for this, which should be the same for everyone? Harlikwin
Yeah, set it with 1 during the day, and it looked fine at night too. How are everyone's frame rates. I'm seeing massive hits around dubai, single player no other units on map. Like my frames went from solid 45's or maybe some slight dips under that in 2.5.5, to mid to high 20's in 2.5.6. Hawkeye_UK
Rift S user - defo gamma set to 1 for both day and night. Anything more just washes it out. Look's brilliant its like new maps to be fair in low light conditions, also during the day the sky seems a more natural blue colour. Anyway just need to kill the many many problems that 2.5.6 has created and then can actually enjoy it (multiplayer) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DCS & BMS F14B | AV-8B | F15E | F18C | F16C | F5 | F86 | A10C | JF17 | Viggen |Mirage 2000 | F1 | L-39 | C101 | Mig15 | Mig21 | Mig29 | SU27 | SU33 | F15C | AH64 | MI8 | Mi24 | Huey | KA50 | Gazelle | P47 | P51 | BF109 | FW190A/D | Spitfire | Mossie | CA | Persian Gulf | Nevada | Normandy | Channel | Syria | South Atlantic | Sinai Liquid Cooled ROG 690 13700K @ 5.9Ghz | RTX3090 FTW Ultra | 64GB DDR4 3600 MHz | 2x2TB SSD m2 Samsung 980/990 | Pimax Crystal/Reverb G2 | MFG Crosswinds | Virpil T50/CM3 | Winwing & Cougar MFD's | Buddyfox UFC | Winwing TOP & CP | Jetseat
Hawkeye_UK
Sorry re FPS - hard for me as had to disable the VR mod which cuts the field of view cut down which i don't know why ED do not do themselves as can only look at the FOV at any one time to process around that is a waste of GPU- and lazy to be fair not to include it. Anyway that aside, yes from when i didn't have it enabled (which had to for full screen screenshots) then there is a slight downturn, nothing massive however for me. That said i made the mistake of turning on the new feature of SSLR or whatever it is - do not do this in VR i dropped from 40fps to 24 ish - literally kills it. Biggest hit i've found which has been logged but is a major problem was testing out the 14 to basically have a fly around and eat some miles up quickly on the PG map. Jumping into the rio pit for some reason i get a 50% drop in frame rates which makes the rio position untenable (not been able to test multiplayer because of the 2.5.6 problems however if its bad SP it's generally worse MP). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DCS & BMS F14B | AV-8B | F15E | F18C | F16C | F5 | F86 | A10C | JF17 | Viggen |Mirage 2000 | F1 | L-39 | C101 | Mig15 | Mig21 | Mig29 | SU27 | SU33 | F15C | AH64 | MI8 | Mi24 | Huey | KA50 | Gazelle | P47 | P51 | BF109 | FW190A/D | Spitfire | Mossie | CA | Persian Gulf | Nevada | Normandy | Channel | Syria | South Atlantic | Sinai Liquid Cooled ROG 690 13700K @ 5.9Ghz | RTX3090 FTW Ultra | 64GB DDR4 3600 MHz | 2x2TB SSD m2 Samsung 980/990 | Pimax Crystal/Reverb G2 | MFG Crosswinds | Virpil T50/CM3 | Winwing & Cougar MFD's | Buddyfox UFC | Winwing TOP & CP | Jetseat
Harlikwin
The major MP servers are all back on 2.5.5 due to crash issues, which may or may not be related to the lighting. Not clear on what those problems are, but it is a major bummer. But yes, if I'm struggling with FPS offline, its gonna be way worse online. Echo179
One of my bigger complaints right now, is under NVG's. The cursor and tips are treated as light sources, and therefore are really bright and unreadable in NVG's, and can wash out other things as well. It's interesting that these are treated as physical objects in VR, but having them be more like an overlay would be better, at least as far as NVG's are concerned.
