Time to upgrade my machine

Recommended Posts

Running stock, it should be fine, the 3770K was one of the hottest CPU's made. Different board but you should have a bracket that came with your cooler to fit the new board, unless they used the same spaced holes. They also used a different thermal liquid on the 9th gen cpu's so they should run cooler.

Did you see the price of the KF version on the 15th December £197.88.

Apparently the H60 will work with any LGA1151 chip, so I read on various other forums. The holes on the rear bracket move so they say, confident will work with new Z390 board. Drawing more to the Aorus Pro as it fits my budget, but will see in a few weeks I guess.

The H60 is as old as my system (7 years) but still works for now as best as I can tell (max 49 deg in DCS single player).

As for <200 for the KF - that's absurd it's not gone so high.

Thanks Bearskin, saw that already. I love this guy! Totally get the threads thing if I could get a good deal on 8700K I would. I guess there's ebay, and I would have to pray I get a decent one.

I'm not sure that in 5 years or so, 8 real cores vs 6 real + 6 virtual will make much difference to me. I could always consider getting the 9900K then maybe, off ebay.

Have you tried clocking your 3770k a bit more, I see you are using a track ir, if I was still using my track ir I would still be rocking my GTX970, the only reason I went to a 2080 is because I went down the VR route, and that is the only reason I am contemplating a cpu upgrade with more memory. I can still play F1 2019, BF5, Modern warfare, all the non VR games on my 27 inch 1080p 144 Hz monitor at full settings. Have a go at getting a bit more out of your ivy bridge see how it is, the 10th gen is not too far away and hopefully the 9th gen will drop in price.

I know this is my board but it could give you some tips, I have had mine to 4.6 stable but I stuck to 4.5 in the end, I see you have got yours to 4.2 so you know the drill, small increments.

Thanks Bearskin, I'm pretty happy with the performance overall. My 34" Gsync is max 100Hz and I play PUBG a lot when not flying with max settings and it tops out at 100fps most of the time. DCS performance isn't bad, 30-40 fps on the ground, 40-60 over Gulf, much better over Nevada and Caucasus. That's SP missions. I don't have time for MP.

I'm looking to upgrade as step 1 toward VR, with step 2 coming later. Plus I still have Win 8.1 with classic shell, which is fine but think latest VR needs Win 10. At least Oculus does, not sure about the others.

Thanks to all that have offered their advice, I'm truly grateful. I've decided I will go with:-

Gigabyte Aorus Z390 Pro Wifi

Intel i7-9700K

Corsair LPX Vengeance DDR4 32GB 3200Mhz

I will replace the Intel 520 OS drive with a 850 EVO I already have, and install Win 10 on that.

R4 Case, H60 cooler, GTX1080, etc I plan to reuse and upgrade at a later date.

Great setup Ratfink, you should have many years of gaming with that rig. Might see you in the skies one day mate when you decide to have a dabble on line.

For the cooler when you decide to upgrade,

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07XLM5FV8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1

I went with the liquid freezer 240 as it had 4 fans for push, pull but you cant get it anymore, if your case is big enough you could go for the same as mine but 6 fan setup, or add another 2 fans to the one in the link.

Been a long day building this bloody thing, but all up and running with said components above and quite happy with the results.

DCS runs a lot smoother, not fully tested yet but the F-16C SP mission "island life" or whatever it's called on the ramp at start gone from 24 ish fps to 50 ish fps. Need to play around a lot with driver settings and can't quite seem to get monitor g-sync to work properly but so far, so good.

Good stuff and well done. You can't really complain jumping from mid 20 fps up to around 50 fps.:thumbup:

And correct me if I'm wrong you have not upgraded your graphics card yet and still have a 1080 right? If so then your next step would be to wait until later in the year when Nvidia release their next generation GPU's Ampere while also hopefully AMD bring to the table some high end competition later in the year also. That is what I'm doing as I hold onto my ageing but still competent Pascal GTX1070 card.

P.S. Don't forget to update your forum signature with your new PC Rig specs. :)

Correct, staging the upgrade process. The 1080 still very capable, and with my G-sync 100Hz monitor I don't need more than 100fps right now.

Hoping to go VR in the future, pretty sure I'll need something better then.

The H60 seems to be doing a good job on the 9700K, 27degC idle, 37degC DCS from what I can see.

Thanks Bearskin, your advice really helped, especially RAM and board choice. Went with the Aorus Pro to save a few quid. I hope I don't miss those H/T cores :)

I don't think you will miss the extra cores Ratfink, if I was buying today I would more than likely go for the exact setup you went for. In 5 years time it will be time to upgrade again anyway.

Hey Wolf333, how's the new system?

Loving it, buddy! I took the hornet down to the deck, about 50' from it, not a single snag. Did it over grassy terrain and then over the ocean to give it a fair shake. I need to use the FPS pop up window to check the data. I'll try that tonight.

Update: getting 76 fps right now. I might be able to tweak some things for more. But very happy with the performance.
